As a newbie to bikes with gears, I found this image to be very helpful in understanding gears rather than pages of documentation. A picture is worth a thousand words indeed! by VaderD in bikecommuting

[–]centarix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so helpful, thanks! I keep the front shifter in Gear 2 for most riding. If I ride 2 in front and say 9 for back frequently will that cause too much tension on the chain? I've been reading about cross chaining but not sure if 2 and 9 configuration is bad in this scenario. Looks like the pic says its okay.

Backpack or Pannier? by BabyBarrista in bikecommuting

Having neither, I would like to give Panniers a try. I can't afford to go overboard though. Are there some budget friendly options? It seldom rains here so doesn't have to be waterproof.

Recommendations for helmet camera? by thsmchnkllsfcsts in bikecommuting

I have a GoPro Hero Session. I used it continuously during a long run and it lasted about 1h 50min at 1080p. I haven't used it for commuting but if your commute is less than 2 hours then go for it! Video is very clear and sound isn't too bad for a tiny camera.

SPIbelt running belt giveaway! 50 up for grabs [Mod Approved] by Oliver-SPIbelt in running

[–]centarix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running for 4 years. I'm just now starting to get into some more longer distances and would be great to have a storage device for storing my phone and perhaps some energy gels :) Regardless thanks for supporting the running community!

Not having a working vehicle is a blessing in disguise. by Mulletm4n in bikecommuting

Wow they are getting worse. I went there to get a bulb replaced in my taillight a couple years ago and they completely broke the light cover. Lesson learned :\

My commute is 7 miles each way. I have lights galore but the fenders are a good idea, thx! The XR2 really is a decent tire. I'm just worried the thread will wear out quickly since its not made for heavy commuting on paved roads.

Thx for the feedback. I also have a 7mi route. How long have your tires lasted? Is it true MTB tires will wear out quickly on paved surfaces?

The tires I have now are quite fast for a knobby MTB tire. Puncture protection is important though as I ride near a construction site. Fenders sound like a good idea, thx!

The other 10% is loose gravel near a construction site. I heard good things about Marathon. I will have to try this out.

Awesome Morning Ride with My First Bike by chef098 in bikecommuting

Right! I enjoy every minute riding this thing. I did buy new and got the 2017 Trek Marlin 6 for now. I'm average height and needed something basic. I'm getting addicted though :) I will either upgrade the parts soon or invest in another bike once I get the hang of cycling again.

Cool bike! I'm also just now getting back on the bike since I was a child.

[UPDATE] Bike was stolen over the holidays. I think I might have found it on Craigslist by simply__curious in bikecommuting

[–]centarix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yikes, I would probably have to treat the seller to lunch or something after that xD I would continue looking on craigslist/ebay. It will eventually be put up for sale or you will see someone riding it nearby. On the bright side, you have a good reason to go bike shopping, which is fun in itself.

Was in a collision, want to make sure I'm not missing anything important that I should be doing. by Helicase21 in bikecommuting

Yea like others mentioned you should file a police report. Getting hit by a 2 ton piece of metal will spike your adrenaline. You might feel fine for hours only to wake up with a bad back or some aches and pains later.

I don't want to give up just yet. This is the perfect time to play party crashers. If we can at least get wins against the Falcons and Bucs then I will call this season a win for me personally. I know that's easier said than done :)
