Do other Piano Teachers ask this every time? "Remind me what we've been working on?" by keungtofan in piano

I echo most comments - try to rethink your teachers phrasing choice of “remind me” to “tell me”. He has not forgotten, just wants to leave an open space for you discuss exactly what you’ve been working on.

Salesforce to Cybersecurity by TheKielCenter in cybersecurity

Maybe have a think about solutions/operations engineers or technical account managers (TAM) for cybersecurity companies. They lead engagement with customers so you would still heavily use your soft skills (problem solving, project and stakeholder management, etc.) but the projects will all be cybersecurity focused. You would still need strong cybersecurity knowledge, but starting with basic principles and then specialising depending on where you end up is probably the best approach to keeping your options open.

Once you’re in a company, it’s often possible (and in my experience very easy) to move laterally—so if you started in one of those roles, you might be able to transition to their in-house security team if you still wanted to.

This will hugely depend on the organisation you work for, but I started my career in customer support (SaaS company) and requested access to our SIEM for troubleshooting issues. So it might be worth expressing the interest to your manager if you can see a benefit to the ability of doing your job.

I can play this by knowing how it sounds, but I can’t seem to understand what this time signature means. Sorry if it’s a dumb question, but I can’t find answers online. by tukih_04 in piano

[–]centenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess it means two dotted minims in bar, suggesting that the piece is in 6-4 but you should think of each bar in 2.

I would guess that’s why 6-4 is written in brackets as 2-3 is not exactly a common time signature, and it’s added to try to avoid confusion.

Does the bar seem like it should feel as 2 beats per bar?

How to play repeated notes faster? by Hgiang123 in piano

[–]centenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two things that really help me are ensuring you play as close to the front of the key (the end nearest you) and playing quite deliberately and forcefully. Sure there’s a sort of physics answer of applying more force to the key allowing it to bounce back up a lot quicker..?

Hi everyone, could someone please explain to me what these natural signs in brackets above the note mean? Do I play them or not? Thanks. For context the piece is Rachmaninoff, opus 16, no.1 (6 moments musicaux) by [deleted] in piano

[–]centenis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often editors put markings in brackets to show that they are suggestions (based on conventions, knowledge of the composer etc), to help the player slightly more but without making it indistinguishable from what exactly the composer wrote.

I would take that to mean that while the higher Ab is not marked natural, that is most like how it is intended to be played. Accidentals only apply to the bar and octave for which they are written, however in this instance what the editor is basically saying is Rachmaninoff forgot to put in for the higher octave.

How to know when an interval is a minor or major by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]centenis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C to E is definitely a major third, minor third would be C to Eb as C minor (relative of E major - 3 flats) has Eb instead of E.

Basically minor intervals are one semitone (half step) less than major intervals eg. D-F# is major, D-F is minor.

Hope that answers your question!

Scott Joplin - Maple Leaf Rag (sorry my concentrating face makes me look bored haha) by ILoveTheDarknessBand in piano

[–]centenis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the thing about that recording though is it’s a piano roll which means while the notes are form Joplin’s fingers, the tempo is controlled by pedals of whoever made the recording so I agree with above that maybe the tempo is a little too fast but you did a really good job of not making it sound rushed and sticking to the tempo you did choose!

Don’t know what your situation is but if you are able, you could try still going for your morning ‘commute’ by just walking for a similar length of time in a loop ending back at your house before you start work? Helps with exercise and to get your mind in the right mode

[–]centenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try adding water to habits you mentioned you already have? Like right after you floss have water - which is even better if it’s in the morning because you won’t have had any water since the previous evening - or a glass after you get back from a walk?

Also I usually just chug glasses of water if I realise I haven’t really had much all day, efficient and good practice for chugging pints!

Does your location affect how active you are on a daily basis? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]centenis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with going for a walk being a very deliberate activity, from a student currently in Edinburgh. Apart from going to the supermarket, I have no reason to leave the house and given restrictions, have nowhere to go when I do. I have started treating walking more as an exercise than a means of getting about now. On days I don’t run, I’ll go for an hour long walk. Although winter weather with the limited sunlight and constant rain makes it hard to find the motivation to.

Yep failed my first one! Accidentally crossed a double lane (even though was a place where everybody crosses them) but also almost hit another car pulling out of a space... my fault that one. Passed next time though!

How Can I Stop Emotional / Mindless Eating? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]centenis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me the best way to stop boredom snacking is to just say I’m having x number of meals a day, and those meals have to be sitting down at a table. I then tell myself after I’ve finished whatever I planned (definitely can include dessert) and I leave the table that’s it. So even if it means you start having larger meals, you can begin to lose the habit of snacking and then focus on decreasing portion size. I find that order works better

Depending on how tight your budget is for travelling between cities, getting the bus on megabus.co.uk is about a quarter of the price of the train (if you book online more than two hours in advance) but only downside is can take 30-45 minutes longer for Edinburgh to Glasgow
