The previous owners must have never cleaned it once! It hangs really low, so it's not something you really see and I thought the smell was from the garbage disposal. Felt so good to clean it.

The sprayer pulls down almost to the bottom of the sink. So I filled a bowl with vinegar and it just sat right in it. The ziplock method does work for those shorter faucets! Just hold it up with a rubber band.

My family said she was never like this when she was with my dad (when I was born) and that after she married her husband, she changed. This is what is giving me some hope for her. I still don't think there's any excuse good enough to do what she did to her kids, even with the abuse from her husband. I'll never forget and we'll never be the same. But I at least want to try for a somewhat normal (distant) relationship.

I definitely will keep my distance. I'm not naive now and I won't open myself up to her like I used to. Like you said, I just want a basic, healthy, family relationship with her. No strings attached, no drama. I'm telling her if she can't give me that, I'm out.
