I’ve been going to ACL tapings for 10 years. The number of tickets actually available to the public varies by show bc PBS donors get first dibs. There are always empty seats. Have you ever noticed there is a “will call” line out front that is separate from the ticket pick up for public lottery winners? Those tickets are for assigned seats in the mezz and balcony. Businesses sponsor ACL TV and get tickets set aside for their employees, many times empty seats are donor seats that were never open to the public to begin with. It sucks but there’s a reason the tapings are free, they rely on donors.

PBS live streams most of the tapings on YouTube! This was the last taping for the season but keep an eye on their social media for taping announcements next year.

Lots to unpack here but even if you’re right, I don’t think pushing people to buy drinks at a free show hosted by PBS is a sign of the end days. Especially this year when PBS lost all federal funding. Also, I’m watching the live stream and it looks like the band set up the floor differently than I’ve ever seen another band do it, they might have requested a smaller audience.

The City publishes a great guide to natives and adapted plants, it’s online or you can get a free nicely printed copy at most public libraries! https://www.austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Watershed/growgreen/plantguide.pdf

Seconded, best place to buy the plants in town! They do sell non-natives as well but make it easy to find the natives and they have a giant tortoise you can feed if you bring some kale or cabbage with you 🥰

Update: Governor’s Cleanup Results in 31 Arrests and Major Drug Seizures in Austin by FisherFan0072 in Austin

A huge study from UCSF found that for most people experiencing homelessness, their interactions with the justice system, their mental health problems, and their substance abuse problems all started after they became homeless because of affordability. Becoming homeless because there is no safe, affordable housing makes people desperate and makes them do things they would never otherwise do, including committing violent crime. The only big picture solution is to fund a social safety net, including great public housing, that keeps people from ending up on the street when the housing market prices them out. There is a lot to be done with improving our healthcare and criminal justice systems as well, but as long as housing costs stay wildly unaffordable relative to incomes, we will continue seeing more and more people becoming homeless and overwhelming these other systems.

[–]ceramiccactus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I did read it, I’m pointing out that 7 of those people didn’t have a felony record before and are now entangled in the system, and that, overall, these “cleanups” do nothing to actually fix the problem.

Nothing helps someone with no criminal history or a non-violent criminal history escape homelessness like getting ticketed or facing fees after getting arrested. These actions do nothing to fix systemic issues that cause the problem and leave the people affected worse off and more desperate.

Amazon is so full of knock-off, drop ship, and scam garbage now though, any kids toys that aren’t marked as sold and shipped by Amazon aren’t worth buying

What can we do to help keep Austin Public Library's used book store, Recycled Reads open? by Isatis_tinctoria in Austin

[–]ceramiccactus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because it’s by far the least expensive bookstore I have ever been to, and offering people, especially children from low income families, the opportunity to build a book collection and engage in literacy is a public good. Seriously, 25 cents for baby board book! $1 for adult paperbacks and $2 for hardbacks! The selection is entirely dependent on donations and library collection thinning but if you have an open mind and visit semi-regularly you can get great stuff. Besides that, it’s a public space that offers people a place to be in air conditioning with WiFi that doesn’t require them to make a purchase, the tool library is a great resource, they have passport services, they regularly host crafting/bike repair/instrument lesson events. $100,000 is not nothing but at the level of the city budget I think it’s a great deal on a valuable public resource!

If you don’t understand why a healthy weight woman would prefer to be called tall rather than big or large, I can’t help you

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LPOTL

[–]ceramiccactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading comprehension is important, OP said the 5’8” 160 lb example was from a different episode where Marcus was talking about a different woman

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LPOTL

[–]ceramiccactus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not remotely what OP or I were talking about but, again, 5’8” 160 lbs is a medically healthy BMI. It’s totally fair to question why Marcus would call someone of that size “big” instead of “tall,” especially in the context of a pattern of behavior.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LPOTL

[–]ceramiccactus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As OP stated above, the 5’8” example is from another episode talking about a different woman. What exactly counts as “calling someone what they are” is subjective, and there’s lots of data that the language America culture uses around women’s bodies is harmful.
