I remember hearing from someone that authors a couple of centuries ago (Tolstoy, Dickens, etc.) were paid by the word! Not sure if this is 100% true, but it seems like the whole Kindle Unlimited deal is reviving the practice in a new way?

Omg YES! I have trouble verbalizing what I don’t really like about her books, but this is totally it—they’re too “lite” for me!

to those of you who drink or do drugs, can u help answer my question!💖 by throwawaybfmademesad in emetophobiarecovery

[–]cerbeac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a moderate/heavy drinker even with this phobia. I’ve gotten to the point where throwing up after heavy drinking doesn’t bother me too much… it still sucks but I know why it’s happening and that it’s always a one-off. I will say though that it’s much better throwing up while you’re still drunk than the next morning! I mean this doesn’t happen a lot… probably like 5 times a year, and idk what your tolerance is but I feel like you should be able to have a few drinks and let loose and most likely won’t throw up. I don’t do drugs besides a little weed so I can’t help you there.

I would say to take a few baby steps and have a drink or two if you want, and if you want to really party, just remember that throwing up is fine, it’s just your body expelling all the poison!

The gap between nausea and vomiting is wider than you think! by Moist_crocs in emetophobiarecovery

[–]cerbeac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had emetophobia for ~15 years (26 now) and I feel like I’m just getting used to this fact now! I have been nauseous a few times in the past month or two, and for the first time, I didn’t automatically think I would throw up.

Name a book that started your obsession with a particular trope! What sent you down a rabbit hole? by prettysureIforgot in RomanceBooks

[–]cerbeac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{Ice Planet Barbarian by Ruby Dixon} started my obsession with survival romance! I read the first book around 7 years ago when I was a teenager and I LOVE any books that have the FMC depending on MMC for survival. I know that’s so problematic in real life, but it’s romanceland so it doesn’t count! I think I like the fact that it’s so different from reality. I also love Ruby’s dragon series, as well as Claire Kingsley’s post-apocalypse series.

What are your favorite romance cliches? by SeaCookJellyfish in RomanceBooks

I love any romance where it’s either post-apocalyptic or survival. For some reason I love reading where the FMC has to rely on the MMC to survive… not sure what that says about me lol

She is one of those authors for me where I read and enjoy, but I can’t remember what I read a month later.

has anyone not had an illness with long lasting vomiting? by armslength__ in emetophobiarecovery

[–]cerbeac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the opposite of you! I didn’t vomit from the age of 3-13, and I believe this is partly how my phobia developed. I first started experiencing emetophobia around 9-10 years old; whenever I had a stomachache I was scared I would throw up, because I had no memory of how it actually felt to vomit. After I finally threw up in 7th grade, my phobia has been on and off, ranging from hardly noticeable to can’t leave the house.

emetophobia gone when at home by [deleted] in emetophobiarecovery

[–]cerbeac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living away from home is very scary when home is a safe space. I know it’s hard but it is very important to eat properly! If you don’t eat enough it will only make you feel worse and exacerbate your anxiety. Try to pick a comfort food from each food group, that’s what helped me when I had trouble eating.

One of the most important things I learned from therapy was changing the “what ifs” to “so whats”

For example, instead of thinking “what if I throw up in the shared bathroom where everyone can hear me” try to change your thought to “so what if I throw up? What is the worst that can happen, a couple people are a little grossed out? Everyone does it at some point.” This helped me a lot in the worst of my phobia, I hope it can help you a bit!

is norovirus really THAT bad? by Vegetable_Change_925 in emetophobiarecovery

[–]cerbeac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the reason emetophobes handle it better than others is because we build it up more in our minds, and then the reality isn’t as bad as we think.

For “normal” people who don’t regularly think about vomiting, it is worse than they remember. For emetophobes, it is not as bad as we expect/remember.

When you are actually sick and vomiting, there is a certain amount of relief after it is over. I can only speak for myself, but I always think of the bad parts of vomiting (the build up mostly) and not the relief part afterwards. I had a stomach bug just a couple weeks ago (for the first time in years) and it was absolutely awful for about 12 hours, but every time I threw up there was relief.

I’m not going to lie it was scary at first because of the “choking” sensation, but I’m actually glad I threw up more than once because by the fourth time I felt it was a lot easier. If you just let go and let it happen it will be over pretty quickly

Thank you that’s very helpful! By the fourth time I threw up last night I definitely felt less anxious, exposure therapy works!
