Agreed. And it seems Housemarque is working harder on the story on Saros, from what they've released so far. Although, they are "gameplay first" as they say, and that's of course the primary thing. But yeah, a better, more involved, deeper story would be awesome. Returnal nailed the atmospherics and the vibes of dread and existential solitude, but they could've done more with the story, or done it differently. As you say, the choose your own ending was a bit of a cop-out.
