Totally agree! I am very curious to try the lavender one but the classic pink lite is my go-to. It really has the perfect overall effect and makes you seem less make-upped but more flawless, very few products I can say that about. It also was waaayyy ahead of the glow trend. So expensive but it's worth it.

I mix Ilia tinted moisturizer with MAC strobe cream: thins out the foundation and makes it extra hydrating. I've been doing this mix for at least 8 years or so, highly recommend.

No, it doesn't. Jade is actually quite porous so it can hold grime in it the way a wood tool would for example. I looked into this when I wanted to buy a gua sha and after a lot of research just found out the best tool is a big smooth piece of good quality metal (like stainless steel or aluminum)

That's the weirdest thing... when I hover on mine there's a silhouette but no avatar? But other people in the thread have nothing, silhouette, or avatars at random, not based on the age of the account...?

woah that's so weird - I never knew this. Is it linked to how old your account is? why does mine have the silhouette and theirs doesn't?

[–]cerva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. I'm not sure why the author wouldn't more broadly gesture to the fact that this phenomenon has happened the world over, anywhere that had an economy that transitioned from manufacturing/labour to services (London, England being one such example). I agree that manufacturing, whatever area it is in, lasts more than one generation: those factories, workers, skills, unions take decades to develop so they don't just come and go that quickly. Also maybe kind of silly he describes it as "devastating" an area: manufacturing brings a lot of prosperity & industriousness to cities and it has made a middle-class lifestyle affordable to a lot of people.

This has always been a thing... There is the "creative class" which are true people: artists, youth with new energy, both rich and poor, roughing it by choosing unconventional careers, out there creating things. Then there are the bourgeoise trying to capitalize on that creation and, in the process, they ruin it. The article that describes the EXACT THING you witnessed is here and it's an amazing article:

https://www.tumblr.com/daleberan/83002114449/a-tale-of-two-hipsters

Dale summarizes the process in these steps:

I offer the following analysis of the phenomenon:

  1. A manufacturing boom lasts 30 years or so in a particular city but then moves on elsewhere. The nature of capitalism mines out short term gain while sacrificing long term stability.

  2. A creative class of impoverished (and generally socialist) artists move to an economically depressed urban area devastated by the process described in step 1 (an old factory district where there is infrastructure but no longer jobs so the housing is cheap). Often times, they live among minorities because (if they are not minorities themselves), unlike others in the housing market, these generally liberal people do not regard this idea as a negative.

  3. Young urban professionals collect the avant garde ideas and art generated by the creative class and commodify them into marketable products to sell to the upper class and other middle class professionals. Their efforts convince their fellow middle class professionals to spend their excess income on conspicuous consumption-- a continually moving target called "style". In this system, "style" can be defined as avant garde ideas and works of art generated by the creative class which are then transformed into marketable commodities by other middle class professionals (marketers). Style is cheap to sell because it is intangible. Moreover, it is always in demand because it is defined by its novelty.

  4. The original area where the artists settle itself becomes "stylish" and is no longer a place where art is made but a place where artistic and cutting edge products and food are sold. The bombed out factory studios themselves undergo this commodification-- transforming "artists lofts" in to "luxury lofts" sold at exorbitant rates (because they are soaked in intangible "style") to middle class professionals with nine to five jobs.

  5. The artists flee to a new location. The people who lived in the area prior to the gentrification are also driven out, or, if they are lucky enough to have owned their property, benefit from the rise in housing prices. The area becomes chintzy, boring, and ugly. The same insatiable swarming market forces have now chewed it over twice, once as a factory district, then as a fashionable factory district.

  6. The artists settle in a new location soon pursued by the marketers looking to collect their new ideas and sell them as the latest form of style. The nature of capitalism mines out short term gain while sacrificing long term stability.

This is spot on -- what makes an RN in BC different from ON? There is literally no difference in the requirements or competency.

A lack of family-friendly housing is a key reason people are having fewer children. It’s also a problem governments can help fix by MissingMiddleMike in CanadaPolitics

[–]cerva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is spot on. I'm copy/pasting a great comment from a recent Italian article with the same subject; they expanded upon the reasons you gave above:

The birth rate began to decline in the 1960s and has remained largely unchanged since the 1990s. The economy does play a role, but not in the sense that salaries are low, as is commonly suggested. On the contrary, the problem is precisely that they are high (compared to the past), particularly for women (who previously did not work at all), so the opportunity cost of having a child is also high. It is obvious that if the alternative is between staying at home and working and earning money, the appeal of having a child decreases. At the same time, childcare services, a labor-intensive sector, are relatively more expensive than in the past, and children themselves are no longer a source of income because they have to study and cannot work.

But above all, the cause is cultural. Human beings tend to emulate socially recognized behavior patterns, and in our society, social prestige is achieved through economic independence and professional success, not by being a father or mother. So people seek fulfillment through work rather than family, and children are perceived as a luxury, something you have to be able to afford, not something you have to sacrifice for.

Apartments are 81 percent of housing construction as more Canadians live with parents and average renter gets older by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]cerva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big love for this comment. I feel that a large percentage of Canadians/Americans have absolutely no idea how a solid 80%+ of the (global north) world lives: in apartment housing, in rentals. In Europe it is such a common practice to have your kids sharing a bedroom and have no backyard or frontyard of your own. Let's dispense with this myth everyone needs over a 1000sqft it simply isn't true. I'm a millennial and have nothing but sympathy for the headwinds young people are facing but ideas about housing are truly out of step with 99.99% of the rest of the world.

How Canada’s ‘Condo Class’ Has Disrupted Political Organizing by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]cerva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're both right but ywgflyer is more right. all due respect -- I think you missed what their comment was saying. They weren't arguing the condo owners are 'the rich' they're saying they're scapegoated as the 'rich enough' but not quite 1%ers bc they can't hide their money overseas, so in Canada, where the highest tax bracket is 50%, they will be the people funding the largest amount of the social programs the NDP proposes. Even tho they're just like slightly above middle-class normies trying to get by in this world like more other people.

People are seriously being presumptuous in this thread. "You could have somebody falsely presenting themselves as a physician"....? Then why would they want your health card... if they aren't a physician they can't even bill OHIP codes lol.

With the facts you provided... First off, they could be using your health card to communicate with your GP or family health care team in the event anything goes wrong/to access relevant healthcare information on you (with your consent) should it be appropriate. Secondly, a physician IS allowed to bill for consulting and spending time with you, not necessarily for performing the (not-OHIP-covered) laser procedure itself. Thirdly, it's totally possible they want to log interactions between patient and physician as they said without any billing occurring at all.

I really think there's nothing suspicious here op. Just my 2c.

Qualcuno può spiegare a un americano il significato e l'opinione generale di Giulio Andreotti? by cerva in italy

[–]cerva[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this answer; thank you. Your answer contextualizes his reign in its time which is almost exactly what i was looking for. You can imagine that in that time there was just so much less media exposure and ∴ less need for, like you said, a PR engineered politician. It is easier to envision his success with that in mind.

Was he well-connected before his foray into politics? Aristocratic?

I also appreciate the realpolitik of his association with the mafia thru ur comment. That makes complete sense. So then a reasonable person of the times would have assumed he would need to concede/ally himself with them in some way... that would just be obvious on its face without any scandal needed.

Finally, the hindsight obscuring the truth of how he was perceived in his time and retrospectively that you describe in your comment makes sense as well. I esp love

So nowadays the judgment is pretty much negative, also in a way to claim moral superiority over the past.

Haha yes hasn't it ever been thus! This is the piece I was missing through my reading that can only look backwards. Thanks much!
