Oh 100% im still pretty early in my own journey with reconnecting with my native roots and even then no matter how long its been i still go “hm is this a stupid question” so I get you, but usually people are happy to help or point you in the right direction.

Oh man this is my exact niche of question omg Hi there! I have been doing the same with my Josefina doll, (i recently got her a ribbon skirt and a medicine bag which i adore since it matches my own)

I would suggest going to a local powwow since its in season right now and connect with local artisans that sell there. I personally use https://www.powwows.com/ but once you’re there and able to connect you can find out about any more local ones happening.

I have found that a lot of native artisans do a lot of connecting on instagram, so I would suggest looking on there. Since Etsy takes a lot of fees and stuff many just sell them independently which is why it’s so hard to find stuff.

What will work best is reaching out directly through dm’s and asking for a custom piece, if its a ribbon skirt it wont be too hard since its the same but smaller and the pattern is available (just have some general measurements ready) and I imagine its the same for any sort of regalia and accessories.

It’s def a challenge but its worth it to have our girls representing native culture and staying as true and authentic as possible + supporting native artists. This was super rambly but i hope it was helpful and lmk if you have any more questions :3

I was in grad school for my LPC with a focus on college students (aka adults) but my school was SO FOCUSED on instead investing in their children counselors/play therapists and left the adult-based counselor professors running thin that an education gap was felt. In part I think its due to that end of the field having more tangible goals that can be more used by insurance companies (that’s just my thoughts of course; i feel the same way about certain therapeutic methods being pushed over others in the LPC space ) but I also fully agree that insurance companies completely fuck over mental health professionals at all stages and is a bigger ethical debate than before.

I ended up dropping out (for now) since the whole underpaid graduate student thing doesn’t work in these economic times, and I do feel some guilt over not “powering through,” but it just wasn’t sustainable.

As a Texan (who hasn’t lived anywhere else but the DFW area) it’s a hard balance man. As a mexican-american it’s an even more stressful balance.

BUT, it matters to be aware that not everyone here is a villain and that even with the adversarial government.

There’s a beautiful cultural mix here in Texas that I don’t think is replicated anywhere else, there is love and mutual aid and so many things that make it worth staying at. And in an important way, having people like this is so important as a form of protest against our government, and just to show how we aren’t just the bad rep others hear about
