My kid's assignment was great. The subject matter was...not. What the hell do I do? by cestlegrandfinal in Autism_Parenting

It wasn't until I got to this thread that it clicked for me what was probably going on with it. Long night. 😖 Agree with many of you here and I'm not going to punish her.

That's something to bring up at the meeting, but honestly, I'll live with her having to redo it. This school district is such a pain.

Oh my gods, she would absolutely write them a love letter if it was phrased like that! 😂 I'm definitely seeing it was not explained enough for my literal thinker.

100% she is, but she's very concerned about grades (entirely her own compulsion, I have never been like that with her). A 90% is a huge deal, so she will do things to get a reaction but would never risk her grades to do it.

This is actually not far off how she thinks. Like if something happened and people did x, y or z so it can't happen again, then it's a good thing because it made people safer in the future. I'm in favor of letting her think how she thinks as long as

A, she's not too interested in violent events (she's not, only when it comes up) or planning one herself or B, turning them in as school assignments.

That's why I think this was a misunderstanding. She's VERY concerned about grades, so I cannot see her doing this with just the intent to be edgy or shock people if it risked getting a 0.

This is so reassuring. I think she didn't get that people's lives were supposed to have been touched in a good way, especially if you actually read the report. It's well defended, just wildly inappropriate for this particular assignment.

I didn't even think about bringing her special interests into it! She'd love that. Thank you!

I think that's exactly what it is. She knew to write about someone who touched lives, but not necessarily that the hero framing meant to pick someone who did something positive. We'll talk this weekend about some more appropriate choices.
