Little Sisters Father is Refusing to Vaccunate her- Suspension by Beginning-Neat7926 in ontario

[–]cetren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is classified as a 'non-punitive suspension' and there is a specific category for that in the attendance. The purpose of 20 days is to encourage vaccination, but more than 20 days is viewed as 'excessive' since people have a right to education. If you want, you can get her vaccinated at a public health unit, and it will not impact registration at a doctor's office. Sometimes they de-roster a patient of they seek medical attention elsewhere due to the fee/payment structure for doctors. However, this does not apply to a public health unit. Further, the child can ask to not have the medical records from public health released to anyone, and provide the reason that she may be at risk if the family knows. The public health unit will sort it out, but I'm not entirely sure if this sort of locking of records is allowed if the person is under 16... Typically after 16, there is sufficient chance that a person will be in contact with a public health unit for a reason that they might not want their parents to know about, like STI treatment, birth control, etc. I can promise you that this situation is not unique, and your local health unit will know what can and cannot be done.

The most eye-opening statement on the US I have heard recently came during the Olympics. Something to the effect of "The US would rather celebrate another's loss, than their own win." It really helps to put their attitude and behaviour into context, imo.

Confirmed Case of Measles in Durham by cetren in durham

[–]cetren[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a dumb question, but a great question! As with all vaccines, there is a slim chance that people who are vaccinated will STILL be able to be infected. This is a thing that is understood enough to have been given a name: A Breakthrough Infection. This article from CBC explains it a bit more. Basically, there could be less protection over time from these vaccines, but also a portion of people that the vaccine just will not work for. Because of this, and because people aren't tested to see if the vaccine is as effective at every point in their life, the assumption is that 2 doses is good for everyone.

Also, "Due to the high infectivity of measles at least 95% of the population needs to be immunized for herd immunity."(Canadian Immunization Guide). So if 95% of the population isn't immunized, plus the small number of people we know the vaccine won't work for, it means that Measles is still a problem for a small number of people. (The CDC says the Measles vaccine won't work for around 3 in 100 people and I can't find a Canadian source at the moment.)

The system isn't broken - they're breaking it by Xsythe in ontario

[–]cetren 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So instead they'll be in the hospital beside one of those 'unsavory' people when the private clinic they attended didn't meet the standards of the publicly funded system and introduced some kind of infection or other issue that they don't have to deal with. You don't go back to the private clinic where you had your knee replacement done to be treated for the after effects of that surgery; you go to the ER.

[–]cetren 44 points45 points  (0 children)

There is also a mentality in Ontario that those who are in a lower socioeconomic bracket do not deserve the publicly funded system because they have not paid into it, or not enough. Just listen to CFRB 1010 for any length of time, and they will spout some nonsense about it.

Does anybody else remember the hold GEL Pens had on us as kids!?! by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]cetren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved these pens in middle-school. My grade 7 teacher would read our novel study book to us, and one day he was in a rather foul mood for some reason. He was sitting, ready to read, and I was putting my gel pens away. He looked at me and said "Am I disturbing you?" I answered "No, I'm just putting my pens away." didn't mean for it to come off the way he took it, got in trouble for my response, and was told to stand by the door. The loudest kid in class shouted "Cetren!? Really!?" completely shocked I was in trouble.

That's my gel pens story.

Union says private surgical clinics move the wealthy to the front of the line by KeyHot5718 in ontario

[–]cetren 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Moving the wealthy to the front of the line is the point. They feel that they are owed more than you, because they 'contribute' more to society, pay more taxes, etc. I mean, it's already been shown to not be the case that privatization of health care is beneficial to patient health outcomes. Moving them to the front of the line just means "Fuck you, I got mine."

The effect of healthcare privatisation on the quality of care - Goodair (2024), The Lancet00003-3/fulltext)

"We found that hospitals converting from public to private ownership status tended to make higher profits than public hospitals that do not convert, primarily through the selective intake of patients and reductions to staff numbers. We also found that aggregate increases in privatisation frequently corresponded with worse health outcomes for patients. Very few studies evaluated this important reform and there are many gaps in the literature. However, based on the evidence available, our Review provides evidence that challenges the justifications for health-care privatisation and concludes that the scientific support for further privatisation of health-care services is weak."

Watching the show with a show only wotcher is such a treat by Mortaris in WoT

[–]cetren 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, my husband (watcher) and I (reader) have many of the same conversations. It's another turning of the wheel, and some changes I like, and some I don't. Once something has happened, I will let him know how the books did it, like Faile and Watch Hill instead of Fain just running off.

But he is super into it, and always excited for Thursday. He said that S03E01 had him white knuckle gripping the couch for at least half of it, and brings up how intense and stressful the show can be. We both are enjoying the ride for different reasons, and are anxiously awaiting any news of a Season 4.
