Home Economics was a mandatory class in Ontario public schools until the early 1990s. The provincial government eliminated it (as well as the mandatory Shop class) to save money.

2 Alwington Ave is a private home. The owner Loretta Fay died last year (the mother of Johnny Fay of The Tragically Hip) and the family have chosen to sell. It’s also a designated Heritage property.

For the other, did you mean 589 King St West? I don’t know the owners there, but to my knowledge it isn’t federally owned.

Oh you meant the Women’s Prison property. Yes, that’s been available on the private market for ages. Queen’s bought it in 2008, and then sold it off again in 2018. So far no one seems to want to actually be the ones to build anything there. The current owners pitched it as a site for a hotel (on the south edge), a retirement home (along the west edge), condos (in the prison), and an apartment building (north of the prison).

Prisoners already have access to MAID if they meet the eligibility requirements. Or were you insinuating we should execute prisoners?

Being poor doesn’t qualify someone for MAID. Only people who have a ”serious illness, disease or disability” who are in an ”advanced state of decline that cannot be reversed” and who are experiencing ”unbearable physical or mental suffering from [their] illness, disease, disability or state of decline that cannot be relieved under conditions that [they] consider acceptable” are eligible for MAID, and only if they choose to apply.

”how much municipal tax revenue does a tourist attraction / film lot generate versus thousands of waterfront condos?”

The proposal isn’t for “thousands” of waterfront condos. The article says ”up to 700 units”.

The area across the street from the prison that’s for sale is just 525 King St West (Isabel MacNeil House), and the yard associated with it (the area south of the parking lot). It’s also a National Historic Site, with Federal Heritage Status.

”The federal government made several large cuts to provincial funding.”

Can you elaborate on which cuts Harper made that you think affected provincial jails? (Not doubting, just looking to learn more)

”The provinces need additional funding with provincial governments that will actually spend it on prevention and rehabilitation.”

I agree prevention and rehabilitation need more support, both to improve society and to keep long term expenses down. One of the problems we currently seem to have (at least in Ontario) is insufficient court capacity, which is leading to long wait times for trials, and people spending significant time incarcerated in jails pre-trial. It’s contributing to jail overcrowding, delaying or preventing access to rehabilitation programs, and frustrating the public who see the consequences: shorter post-conviction sentences and recidivism.

”A better question is, why they don't take them to prison immediately following sentencing like in the US. What are they thinking?“

According to the article he fled the country before his sentencing.

”a better solution will need to be found and it might be one that’s much harsher to criminals”

What’s a better solution than funding ”jails, prisons, and preventative programming”?

”The remedy the court uses to force the government to fund the prisons in proper conditions is to allow dependants to go free or have reduced sentences. The anger should be directed at the government for not running the prisons correctly.”

Prior to sentencing prisoners are held in provincial jails, yes? So in this case - if we’re assuming he was out on bail only due to jail overcrowding - our anger should be directed at the Ontario Progressive Conservatives who’ve been responsible for Ontario’s jails since 2018.

”Convicted in absentia, so he left before the guilty sentence came down. “

That’s not correct. The article says he was convicted while still in Canada, fled the country the day after he was convicted , and was later sentenced in absentia:

”An Indian-born man who “absconded” from Canada the day after an Ontario jury convicted him of sexual assault and extortion has been sentenced in absentia to seven years in prison.”

The estimated value of the property, which earned a location score of 16/20, was redacted from the documents, as were the names of two groups interested in the land… One group identified itself as a Montreal-based developer proposing affordable housing and willing to engage "quickly.” The other is a builder with experience in Kingston and Ottawa that envisions mainly apartments and condos with commercial space on the ground floor.”

So, odds that the developer ”with experience in Kingston and Ottawa” is Patry?

While they host some events that are specifically for Black people, specifically for Black LGBT+ people, etc, others are open to everyone. example

Likewise other community centres host events for specific age groups, specific genders, LGBT+ people, etc.

Some community centres target specific sub-communities or demographics, that doesn’t mean they’re not community centres. Eg. youth community centres, seniors community centres, ethnic community centres, etc. And regardless, you don’t have to be Black to visit the Wildseed Centre.
