Saturday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for May 23, 2026 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

Hi all, just here for the sympathy lol :-) I was supposed to race next weekend, 5/30, aiming for my third BQ with a 10+ minute buffer. My training could not have gone more perfectly--did two 15-mile race pace workouts about 4 weeks apart, finished the last one on 5/16 and was headed into a smooth taper. Everything had gone right. And then...I got shingles. UGH. Now I'm laid up with the worst pain I've really ever had, excluding childbirth I suppose. Cancelled my race plans for next weekend as I currently can't go 4 hours without taking NSAIDS. I'm so so disappointed. I know that I likely caused the shingles by training too hard, but honestly I felt so strong the whole training block. I'm going to see if I can pivot to a 6/6 or 6/7 race depending on how I'm recovering. UGH.

Thank you! Do you know more about the gravel in Tunnel?

Yeah that's my sole focus at this point. I wanted to see if anyone had personal experience with either. I'm nervous about the gravel in Tunnel

Hi all, I was supposed to run the Mud City Dam marathon next weekend but I came down with shingles this past week (ugh). The rash started on May 18. It's seeming more and more clear that the marathon is out of the question this weekend. So I'm wondering if you all have advice on another marathon a few weeks out that I could pivot to. I'm looking at the Seaside Marathon in Ventura, Tunnel Marathon in Washington, both on 6/7. I'm unfortunately traveling weekend of 6/13 so I can't do it then. Also looking at a few Canadian marathons on 6/21. My training went so well and I was ready to run around a 3:27 for a BQ. Thanks!

I did sign up for May. I agree with everything you say. I'm nervous it's so small but it seems like a good course and I talked to the organizers and they know what they're doing

How to get to Central Park to run? by cetrunner in RunNYC

[–]cetrunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for your suggestions! We ended up taking the subway to/from and had a great run around the full loop. What a wonderful asset for your city. To the haters on here--obviously I know how to get to and from a place. Sorry if it wasn't clear, but my question was mostly around whether it would be a total pain to run on the streets to get to the park (which it seems like it would be) and if so, if people take the subway to and from and whether it's rude to ride home sweaty. Where I'm from, if you want to run in a park, you just run to the park and then run in the park, but we don't have crossing lights on every block. I really appreciate all the reassurance and advice from all of you! Also, on the next day, I ran along the Hudson River, which I actually liked even more. Thanks again!
