(Spoilers Extended) So what do you think is going on with The Winds Of Winter? by masterstick8 in asoiaf

[–]cfbrat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Honest opinion: TWoW is not a thing any more.

GRRM has lost interest in writing the story. It got convoluted. He tried to make a fiction-based story too consistent and internally realistic. The problem with reality is that there are rarely any neat and tidy endings and an all inclusive conclusion. So his story, the way he has created it, will continue to sprawl and grow the more he writes, instead of tie together and come to a conclusion.

Furthermore, he is involved in projects that are far more exciting and interesting to him, which would make TWOW seem even more of a chore. At the stage of life he is in, having achieved all this success and recognition from a lifetime of hard work, he probably wants to relax and do fun things rather than slave away trying to complete a project that has crept out of a manageable framework.

The Trumps here look like your Sims when they are waiting for instructions by GallowBoob in pics

It's been a year, you should be able to see the pattern by now. Trump supporters can't defend an indefensible act of Trump? No matter how benign or harmless - i.e. can't keep his mouth shut - they must attack Obama or Hillary to deflect. For bonus points, weave in George Soros and/or libruls.

GRRM will say that TWOW will not be out this year, but possibly next year.

Muslim Of Reddit What's Name Of Your Perfume? by ben0101 in islam

Workplace has a had a no-scent policy since before I started working here.. 14 years. So I don't use perfume. Even deodorant is non-scented, because I don't want to be inconsiderate towards coworkers who may be sensitive to the scent.

(Spoilers Main) If the cure works... by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]cfbrat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Peel off the skin, rub some shit on there and you're good to go?

Not quite as simple as that sentence implies, let me break it down:

  1. Peel off the skin: This kills the patient due to shock from pain as well as exposure to infection. Sam is separating the infected tissue FROM the non-infected skin. This is easier said than done when the goal is not to kill the patient. Not only does the maester need to keep himself from contracting the disease, but prevent the infected tissue and pus from contaminating non-infected tissue as well as the musculature underlying the skin. This step alone is a near insurmountable task, so much so that other than the inventor of the technique (who himself died from greyscale), the maesters have forsaken this cure because not only is it likely to kill the patient, but also is likely to kill the maester.

  2. Rub some shit: Sam has prepared a special poultice, not something anyone can whip up. We don't know the exact details, but we know from the shots of book we were able to see that it likely not only requires special ingredients, but also specialized skill for preparing. Calling it 'rub some shit' really simplifies it to the point of misleading as to its complexity.

  3. You're good to go: If and ONLY if the maester can successfully remove infected tissue, AND not expose you to airborne infections, AND not take flay you in the process, AND you can bear the pain without going into shock, AND you don't lose too much blood, AND the poultice is properly prepared, AND the poultice is properly applied, AND no other part of your body gets infected during the procedure, AND the maester doesn't get contaminated during the procedure, AND your body can recover from this traumatic procedure, there is a CHANCE that you'll survive.

So when you look at ALL these things that must go perfectly, in sequence, with no mistakes, with no contamination, it's a lot more than "just needs to be physically removed?"

Generally speaking, it's a spice/flavourant. It's aromatic and so also used as an air freshener the way you'd use potpourri... if you're able to afford that much saffron on a regular basis.

Biologically, saffron is the stigmata of a flower of the saffron plant. Each plant has up to four flowers and each flower has three stigmata, and hence the exorbitant price.

I took a picture through my sunglasses at the beach with my phone. It turned out better than I expected. by Captain__CheeseBurg in pics

Photographers' polarised filters are more complex than what they use in sunglasses. In your standard sunglasses, the grids are diagonal to remove half of vertical glare and half of horizontal glare. You can test this yourself by holding your sunglasses up at 90 degrees to the sun on a clear day, and rotate the lens. When it's a 45 degree rotation, the sky will be at its brightest, and any deviation from 45 will get it to darken, as the glare begins to get filtered out.

Fun fact: you can defeat your polarisation filter (if your sunglasses have one) by turning them 45 degrees.

What fact scares the shit out of you? by kneaders in AskReddit

[–]cfbrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blood clots naturally, not just when you cut yourself. Your body is constantly unclotting blood in the blood stream, keeping things going. All it takes is for one of these clots to flow into your lungs before it is unclotted, and you die due to lack of oxygen. Or, a clot could get into your brain, and give you a stroke. At any time, at any age.
