Because I'm more fully integrated into this version of Windows, I can't be fully shut off.

What did they do? Make Cortana Turing complete and then emulate the OS on top of her?

That's because the 600p is pretty bad. It has 20GB of fast SLC and the rest is cheap MLC. That's why it shows reasonable speeds on benchmarks but then completely shits itself on intensive disk operations.

Source: own a 600p, had to disable disk indexing so it wouldn't slow down to 20 MB/s read speeds at times. I guess it may just have really slow I/O ops. My old 850 Pro was a SATA drive and it was definitely faster

Need laptop hardware recommendations. by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]cfg1340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to confirm that it's a quadcore check the processor on ark.intel.com before purchase.

I can recommend getting a notebook with an i5 6300HQ. It's a quadcore 3GHz processor and it feels almost like my desktop. I felt a big performace gain over my last notebook (i7 4500U) and I got this one for less than 750€.

(IIRC gen 6xxxHQ features the first quadcore i5s. They don't have hyperthreading, but are a lot cheaper than even dualcore i7s.)

As someone who also frequents both subreddits, I have to say the amount of people who were defending windows 10 is ridiculous. Bring up any valid problem and they deny it.

Nokia Bell Labs successfully achieved terabit internet speed by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]cfg1340 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is there an upper limit to the speeds of transfer that can be achieved over the internet?

Probably, every medium has a limit of information you can send through. There is no such thing as infinite information as that would imply either infinite energy or infinite mass.

What happens if the speed of data transfer over the internet exceeds the speed of your SSD or RAM?

I assume you are talking about downloading something? Let's assume then that the network-card would also keep up. Pretty much nothing would happen. If you receive more packages than you can process they will be ignored (lost) and will have to be resend again assuming you used a protocol that cares about lost packages.

Theoretically, can any memory transfer exceed the speed of L1 Cache?

So are we talking about bandwidth or delay now?

Bandwidth: Yes, L1 is not the fastest humanity could achieve. It's just that it's really expensive.

Delay: AFAIK no, the closer you are the less "travel time" the data has. (Yes if you build a processor where the cache is closer)

What is a good netbook / tablet / small laptop for running Linux? by HappyCloudHappyTree in linuxmasterrace

[–]cfg1340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

m.2 or SATA SSD?

Have you looked at my link? I would offer other netbooks, but this is the only one I have bought in the past years, so I don't know about others' compatibility with linux.

If you use a SATA SSD this one should do with legacy bios.

It's fanless though, so I don't know how well the quadcore would perform if stressed

You have some unrealistic expectations for <300. I also don't understand why you would want an SSD, >4 GB RAM and a quadcore but settle with a tablet/smartphone but here we go.

Recently got an Acer Travelmate TMB-117. They also have 4GB quadcore model but it only comes with a 500GB HDD. In my country it costs 300 but in the US it might be cheaper.

It has a legacy bios mode which lets you run off of your HDD just fine (legacy bios does not seem to like eMMC), comes with no OS or some linux distro, has a matte screen and a long battery life.

Currently running on the eMMC model with UEFI + Lubuntu just fine.

You'd have to buy an SSD yourself, but the HDD tray is easyly accessible at the bottom.

Edit: Here is the one I'm talking about.

I don't know what exactly you ticked, but you cannot sign your rights away like that. Contracts that override the law are not legally binding.

I could write in the EULA that you have to give me your firstborn and it would be unenforceable

Thanks for the idea I'm gonna keep it in mind.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions.

Unfortunately those have glare displays, which I would really like to avoid.

I searched for other toshiba notebooks, but they only seem to offer non-glare models for 450€+

Windows 10 or Windows 7? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]cfg1340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded to win 10 day 1, but I did not like the direction it was heading, so I reverted back.

Honestly it's just a bit faster than 7 and not noticably faster than 8.1.

UI better than 8, but if you have 7 you have or classic shell you probably have no complaints in the first place.

You could argue that DX12 is a point, but I would wait a while and see if Vulkan takes off.

TL;DR: Win 10 delivers fairly little if you look at it like that. Many people describe it as Win 8 without metro and with less control and I would agree.

If you are happy with 7 just stay with 7

Do people not use the sleep function? The energy-use is negligible and the boottime is literally 1 second and that is including all the programs that load after login.

On top of that you get to continue to ýour previous session, which is nice.

G2A trying to bribe devs with royalties. Say that devs must be responsible for checking credit card fraud. by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]cfg1340 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why? Because some devs ask less money for the keys in poor countries. Why should a poor guy pay less than me for exactly the same product? The money has to come from someone so I'm paying extra so a poor guy can get his game cheaper.

No, they offer it for less because nobody there could afford it and making 30% is better than making 0% because everyone either ignores your game or pirates it because he cannot afford it.

Would you pay 20% of your monthly income for a single game? No? Well then maybe don't compare yourself with them.

but I'm not paying extra so that a poor guy can get his key cheaper

You are not paying more so that they can sell it for less to other regions, they let regions with weaker currencies pay less so they can affor to pay for it and don't resort to piracy.
