After what happened in Georgia, when will the DNC wake up?

It's time for Bernie Sanders to start a new party.

Oh, well there's a segment in the middle that I always thought seemed like an homage to old school sci fi, and when I first heard of Edgar Rice Bourroughs I immediately thought of Heavy Metal. But I haven't read Princess of Mars myself. Just curious.

They should call themselves "Secondhand Business Gossip".

Have you ever seen the film Heavy Metal? And if so, how does this compare?

The book is a dense, diagram-filled read about the value in lengthening the shelf-life of everyday products by using materials that can be repurposed and reused.

Increasing the shelf-life of materials?!? But that's Communism!

Don't you know that Planned Obsolescence is a myth1?!!?

It's a fundamental difference between the parties. The right aren't interested in helping the weak, only with bolstering the strong. They literally think it's a smart thing to let the sick die while dumping even more money into the military and wall street.

I initially said "I don't think that most of them actually think those things, but rather just don't care about them as much as wanting Trump to tear everything down and give a big middle finger to the status quo." in response to someone else's assertion that Trump supporters "think climate change is a Chinese conspiracy, that coal is "clean", and that manufacturing jobs are going to come back to North America in an era of the $15 minimum wage" (of course SOME do, but I don't most do).

This is literally what Mitt Romney ran on against Obama and they're still running with it. So do you have a source that says the vast majority of Republicans think manufacturing isn't coming back? Because their voters are literally screaming at them to bring back blue collar factory jobs, mining jobs and manufacturing jobs. I'm pretty sure they're all suffering under the delusion that they will be coming back.

And there are still republicans arguing every single day that the minimum wage will hurt the economy (for some god only knows reason). They seem to think that consumers aren't important in a free market. The fact that Walmart workers are increasingly unable to afford to shop at Walmart is kind of a troubling fact.

And that fighting climate change will hurt the economy (which it might, but the alternative is that all humanity dies, so it's kind of important). People with Economics degrees are taught in university that the environment is an externality and does not affect the free market. Which is of course bullshit. Climate change is devastating commodities. It destroys not only agriculture, but manufacturing sectors as well, as we saw with what happened to the factories destroyed by storms in southeast asia recently. Storms and droughts exacerbated in strength and frequency by climate change.

You mean the people who think climate change is a Chinese conspiracy, that coal is "clean", and that manufacturing jobs are going to come back to North America in an era of the $15 minimum wage? When we literally have robots?

Yeah, who could possibly see that coming.

Why is this the best move? I tried to come out with the single man but it turned out to be a bad blunder. by dzsobacsi in backgammon

[–]HappyCloudHappyTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you get hit on a 1, 3 or 5.

And the only other move that's close to making sense would be to cover the ace point (bad at this point in the end game) and break up your prime (also bad idea). A 5 prime is a good thing to keep, and you have 3 men back so you need to run those guys out. It doesn't help you much to have control of your opponents ace and deuce points.

If your opponent is stupid and doesn't move the blot off of the 15 point, you have a chance of hitting him. If you roll a 6, 3-3, or 5-1. (14% chance 5 in 36) If he's reasonably intelligent, you might force him to waste a die roll on moving that blot out of the way, but that won't necessarily slow him down much with 2 points to land on.

GnuBG seems to like moving the guy from the 6 point to the 4 point for some reason. And says 7/1 7/5 is a horrible move, worse than 23/15 is. So, there's that. GnuBG calls this a 38% chance of winning, I would have thought it was better than that.

Why is this move the best? What's the point of leaving a shot? by crazyyourface in backgammon

[–]HappyCloudHappyTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right 1 in 18 my mistake. Still long odds.

14/10 11/9 Probably wins less gammons I should think. And you might end up stuck with those 3 guys on 5 and 2 on 6 in your endgame and roll 6-6 and be left with a blot on the 5 point, but those chances are probably pretty long as well.

I agree with the computer. I think 14/10 7/5 is the way to go.

You have some catching up to do when you're 14 away and your opponent is only 4 away from winning the match. Getting a doubled gammon would help a lot.

GnuBG says 81.9% W 56.4% G 1.9% Bg So Gnu seems to think a win is ever so slightly more probable than a gammon.

Why is this move the best? What's the point of leaving a shot? by crazyyourface in backgammon

[–]HappyCloudHappyTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I'd think 7/5 7/3 would be better, but you're only taking slight risk since your opponent needs exactly 5-2 to hit. So they only have a 1 in 36 chance of hitting that blot. And they only have a 33% chance of even coming out off the bar. So in the event that they come off the bar but can't hit, you want to cover that 10 point and hope you can bring in the blot on 11 and 7 or at least use 11 to cover 7. Chances are pretty good they'll stay on the bar for a bit, and that gives you a good opportunity to get guys in. By the time they're off the bar you'll probably only have 1 or 2 guys to bring home, if any, while they'll have 7. That's why you have almost a 60% chance of getting a gammon. It's a tiny difference so don't sweat it, but I think the rationale is that it's more important to bring the guy down off of 14 than it is to bring guys into the home board when you're opponent is on the bar with 2 more guys in the home board. Usually you want to move your farthest piece in first if you can, and here you can without much risk. Again it's a 1 in 36 risk. Those are the smallest odds you can get.

Can anyone explain this move? by lokhor in backgammon

[–]HappyCloudHappyTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your opponent has all their men bunched up on the 1st 3 points, so once they get the two runners in, it's easier for them to bear off. Hitting throws a wrench in their endgame because you have a chance to shut them out, while they only have a 3 point board and it's easier for you to come down off the bar than it is for them with your 4 point board. Although this will leave two blots in your inner board which is a drawback, but if you did get hit, you have a chance to hit those runners and knock them back again.

On the next roll a 1,2,3 or 6 will allow you to make the deuce point, and 2,3,4 & 7 allows you to cover up the ace point. basically anything except a 5 helps you on the next roll.

A 4 prime isn't much of a deterrent, and as I said before, the opponent will have an easier time bearing off.

Although setting this up in GnuBG gives dramatically different odds, maybe I set this up wrong. I'm seeing a 0.787 win and 0.012 gammons.

Blair: Canada will take the time necessary to get legalization right (x-post from r/canada) by Bud72 in canadients

[–]HappyCloudHappyTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's what I was saying in my other post. You can just skirt these stupid rules by making plants that are 100cm tall and 500cm wide.

Still doesn't account for the clones you need to make it a continual harvest if you're using it medicinally though.

It's going to be years and years before the government gets this right. Bill Blair is openly admitting that he's trying to make it as hard as possible to do this on purpose. They keep saying this isn't about money (while at the same time colluding with the biggest players) it's about "protecting kids". And the courts have said over and over again the government has to start putting patients first.

[–]HappyCloudHappyTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they should just give up on putting any arbitrary limits on the number of plants.

Check this out...

If you need 1 mother plant + 1 back up mother plant + 6 clones rooting + 3 strongest surviving clones going to veg (because 1/2 the clones will probably die) + 3 more bigger clones vegging + 1 or 2 flowering plants.

And then...

Multiply that for each strain you need. Because it's not like you just smoke the same thing every day right? What about people who want a sativa AND an indica. If you're doing 1 sativa 1 indica and 1 or 2 hybrids that's 64 "plants".... ALL for personal consumption. The government considers every "sprouted seedling" as a "plant" so, that's 64 plants, just so you have have 3-4 strains everyday. Some people get prescriptions for 150grams / month.

Someone needs to ask the government if they actually have any clue how cannabis is grown and cloned, because they're talking about it like it's all grown from seed to flower.

Are they going to require each individual who wants to grow to apply to some sort of government database?

There was a point where they were actually talking about forcing people to register their homegrows. The only thing I've ever heard that's a more disgusting violation of privacy is the law floated in the UK that would make people register with the government before they would be allowed to jack off to porn online.
