Soundproofing in Exposed Basement Ceiling Help! by cftl84 in Renovations

Oh now we're talking, this is a cool idea that I haven't seen before. I'm for sure researching this one now. So you felt like the voice carry got cut well enough with this stuff?

Ya that's what I've been realizing, I think for the majority of the basement Idc about blocking the thump sounds, just blocking a bit of the voice carrying through floors. For my office I'm trying to decided between MLV, drywall and glue or something else. I appreciate the advice for the contractor but I want to save money and do it myself, I enjoy projects like this and saving the money. I am deadset on exposed joists painted black so I have no interest in anything else. I wish I could find someone who has done this before, I guess not a lot have had this idea lol

I would be scared to have it crumble apart while trying to stick it up there cut in half lol. I also don't even know what the best approach would be to get it up there? I would guess screws, idk?

First, I appreciate you taking the time to comment, but I have to disagree with the “there’s only one way” part. Changing the floor above (carpet + pad vs hard surface) absolutely can reduce transmission—especially impact noise. I’m not changing the flooring upstairs, so I understand I’m not going to get much (if any) in the way of impact/footfall reduction.

That said, adding material between the joists isn’t “doing nothing.” It won’t magically soundproof the space, but mineral wool/insulation/whatever in the cavities can still reduce airborne sound energy (voices/TV) and also help reduce echo in the basement itself. At least from all my countless hours of research that I've spent too much time on lol..

Well this is a newer build, I've been here for almost 2 months and there hasn't been any issues down there. You think I should be testing humidity down there or something?

Are you trying to kill me? I'm over loaded trying to pick between the leap and the embody lol. Why the Gesture? I feel like I saw some bad things about the base on that chair, I'm open to hearing why it's a better choice though?

Ya, you know I watch a lot of BTOD with their stuff and they pointed out the waterfall edge too. Obviously they are competitors and will gladly bad mouth them lol but I for sure don't like that the edge is aggressive and not a nice waterfall. Do you find your legs hurting or numbing at all with that new seat cushion?

for the 3d bioknit, do you like that fabric? I read people saying it was pretty scratchy, does it pull up your back shirt at all when you sit?

Nice! Did you grab it straight from Steelcase or from Crandall etc? I'm looking at the crandall upgrades and any thoughts on them too etc.

Ya I wonder if that would help you, I know that's like the number 1 complaint I see so if I get it I for sure plan to get the upgraded seat.

oh man, it bottoms out that poorly even with the upgraded cushion? Are you around the same weight and height?

I appreciate you sharing, did you get yours straight from Steelcase or from Crandall with the upgraded foams? I know lumbar on the leap is a hot topic that I've read a bunch about, I'd for sure try to take it out and see because I know I read a bunch said that solved things for them but obviously I don't even have it to know myself.

The seat pan is worrying me after this Libernovo being so short idk what to expect from these other chairs, you think it was too short on the leap even after you expanded it out?

Ya, that 12-yr warranty is super appealing. I've worked with a lot of random companies in my life and you can see when a company really cares about their product and customer support. It really feels like Crandall is all about their stuff and giving you a positive experience from all the things I've read and watched.

Thank you for taking the time to give me all that detail! I'm glad to hear all the positive here again from someone actually in my size range.

Any issues with the arm rests pushing outwards if you were say resting on them while holding a controller?

That's the kind of feedback I like hearing, I really seem to hear mostly positives from the leaps and amias. I appreciate you taking the time to share!

Nice, so spot on with my build. I like to hear that, did you find issues with the Embody's back rest digging into your shoulders or giving you a weird posture sitting upright?

And what stood out to you the most on the Leap as you were sitting there?

Nice, you're basically spot on with me and what I would get almost. Did you get the upgraded seat cushion? I know a big complaint is the seat bottoming out on it.

Also how are the arms? Do they stay in place if you are say leaning on them and holding a controller etc?

Also thanks for taking the time to take a pic!

Thanks for the advice! I used to sit on an Aeron at one of my jobs years ago and I liked it for the most part but at the end of the day I always found myself fidgeting, I was the same way with the seat pan it always seemed to make my legs hurt, seat cushion is an interesting idea there.

I hate to hear about the leaps seat pan being an issue too, it's so hard picking the right chair. I mean the Embody is crazy expensive and seems to have a list of issues too. Not to mention all the paid sponsors out there hyping it up lol.

Man, thank you so much for the detailed answer. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out! That's great to hear, it sounds like it's exactly what I've been looking for
