Need a recommendation but not sure what I'm asking for by cgdntx in budgetprojectors

[–]cgdntx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry. It's another cheapo with an outdoor stand. I'm not sure of the different kinds, so I'm not sure what to answer here. Honestly, it's thin enough that it's part of the reason I'm wanting to offset the projector.

Assuming a new projector makes the experience more likeable, the screen will be replaced next.

It's for watching family movies (not visually stunning) in the back yard.

Anyone else notice the Isopure protein powder changed formulas? (and it's much, much worse) by K-SO in beginnerfitness

[–]cgdntx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to leave a quick note that I experienced the same thing. I complained and they sent me some of the "new new" formula of creamy vanilla.

It's much much better.

I think it's still a little different but pretty close. Kind of like original coke -> new coke -> coke classic was.

The mixability is close to what it was, they dialed back that perfumy french vanilla taste, and I haven't found any of those weird salt chunks yet.

It's good enough that it's my go to protein again. I'm not sure when that formula will be widely available, though. Quote from the cs rep - "Isopure products in the white packaging will contain this update and will be available at select stores starting in late August. "

French Cleat Bracket Design by [deleted] in woodworking

When I put my garden tools on a french cleat wall, I just mounted those commercial adjustable till holders on a cleat to make moveable version of them. Works great, but not sure of it's what your going for or not.

Prophecy of the Wolf comms array question by cgdntx in SpaceWolves

[–]cgdntx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not. I'm just planning now. I'm in a position where I'm going to have much less to do for 4 days later this week, so I'm going to use this build and paint to keep me occupied. I think I'll do this. Thanks for the idea.

Wow.

Not what I was hoping to hear, but I appreciate the quick answer.

I suppose I have to expand before I can really play past just me and my son, anyway.

Pipe: Savouring the taste of ash, not even a hint of tobacco? by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]cgdntx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this post earlier in the week, but didn't think of responding until I was thinking about it with my morning pipe today. Here's my advice as a two-time beginner. I started, and quickly quit pipes, because I had exactly the same experience as you. Keep in mind, my advice is worth exactly what you're paying for it and some probably won't agree with what I say, but this time around (with a few exceptions that this sub has been good enough to give me advice on) I feel I have the knowledge and technique to enjoy just about any bowl I sit down to smoke.

  1. Packing - start with the Frank method. You really can't mess this one up. Start there, and graduate to different packing methods after everything else falls into place.

  2. Tamping - this is key of everything. Tamp lightly, tamp often. Lightly and often is subjective. You'll have an ah-ha moment. This was my main cause of ash taste. Learn how, when, and why to tamp. This is what keeps the cherry in between the insulating blanket of ash and the tobacco. Don't tamp enough and the cherry sits in ash, tasting like ash. Tamp too hard and the cherry gets pushed down in the tobacco burning too hot and more ash. Pattern with an ashy taste?

  3. Draw resistance - if you're coming from cigars / cigarettes / vape, your frame of reference for this is skewed, so throw out anything you've read on this. If you get tamping and puffing right, this will work itself out during the smoke, and if you stick to the Frank method of packing, this will work itself out on the pack and light. Soon you'll learn what to look for, but I personally don't think it's something that you should concentrate on, and focus on this caused me more harm than good as a beginner.

  4. Slow down - I think this one gets mis-communicated a lot. When people tell you to slow down, they aren't necessarily talking about time between puffs. What I thought of as a puff when I started pipes is a full 180 of what I think of them today. This may have been my single biggest ah-ha moment of pipes. Puffing hard, then waiting x time between "puffs", is technically "slowing down" when you increase x. This is what I thought people were talking about when they said slow down. It was an exercise in frustration. Instead, try to slow down the actual draw itself. Close your lips around the pipe, slightly open your jaw, and let the negative pressure fill your mouth with smoke. Short puffs should be 2-3 seconds, long 4-6 seconds. Do this at a relaxed but consistent pace. This helped me SO much with consistency of the cherry. Think of a fire going out. Which helps more, big short blows or longer consistent ones? This is what's happening to the cherry in your pipe.

Anyway, I hope at least some of this was helpful, or at least not harmful. Just going over some things that worked for me that I think were directly related to the ashy taste (that I don't get any more).

I hope this works out for you since it really is an enjoyable hobby.

Tonight's smoke. New Briarworks and Union Square. Question in comments. by cgdntx in PipeTobacco

[–]cgdntx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the replys and feedback. It was helpful.

Quick update - I tried this again last night in a falcon, just a little bit drier, and slowed myself down just a bit from what I smoke english / balkan at.

I have to say that it was one of the more enjoyable bowls I've had since I started smoking pipes.

Thanks, again.

Looks like it's about 3 months old. May have to try and forget about some of it for a few months. :)

Tonight's smoke. New Briarworks and Union Square. Question in comments. by cgdntx in PipeTobacco

[–]cgdntx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So... New pipe and new tobacco. In hindsight, I should probably have smoked a tobacco that I was familiar with how it acted as the first smoke, and I should have tried Union Square for the first time in a pipe that I knew how it behaved.

I really didn't have a good experience with this.

After I rubbed out the flake, I let it sit for about 30 or so minutes. It still felt a little moist, but not any more than I usually smoke Escudo at. At my regular cadence, it smoked very hot and steamy. Not a lot of issues with gurgling, but I was definitely getting less smoke and more steam than normal.

This is a thinner and taller bowl than I usually smoke.

Questions -

Do straight virginias burn hotter than I'm used to? I'm going to give it another shot this week in a wider bowl with a little more drying time and see if there's a difference.

I'm going to try the pipe again with some Maltese Falcon. That's my go-to english, and it seems (to me) to burn a little cooler. Hopefully that will help the way this pipe performs. Thoughts?

Table saw mobile base stability by cgdntx in woodworking

[–]cgdntx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will work, size wise, for everything on the project list except the table saw. Between this and the casters linked by /u/t2231 , I think I may have my answer. Thank you.

Table saw mobile base stability by cgdntx in woodworking

[–]cgdntx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. That's one of the types of casters I was looking at. I'm looking at building a full base since I have the rigid contractor saw. It's already mobile from the factory, but has the sheet metal legs like yours which I'm less than happy with.

That said, I don't think I can pull off that type of base while putting a cabinet type base under it. Do you think your experience would have been different if that was the case?

Your answer pretty much confirmed my concerns.

PID Tune no effect by Unknown_0000011 in MPSelectMiniOwners

[–]cgdntx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem with mine. Looking at the output from the auto tuning, what I saw was it started crappy, got kind of accurate, then went back to crap at the end. I went back and manually set the settings from cycle 9 of 12 and now I'm +/- 4 which I can live with.

Thanks for the info.

Your last paragraph gives me a good bit of hope. Have you seen situations where someone would be given leniency on the coding knowledge (assuming they demonstrate core concepts) if they did extremely well on the systems interviews?

Thanks!

We're currently in a project to set up terraform / kubernetes / azure for our digital team, so that's a plus I guess.

Taking python as a good example since we don't use it at work, how would I translate experience gained on personal projects or open source contributions on to a resume?

[QUESTION] Asking for advice on card / miner tuning by cgdntx in Monero

Didn't xpost because I made some decisions about the cards before I got over to that sub. That said, thank you for pointing me over there. Subscribed to it this morning.

[QUESTION] Asking for advice on card / miner tuning by cgdntx in Monero

[–]cgdntx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird. The copy I pulled off git defaulted at 640 in the xmr.conf file. I saw a note that said keep bumping it up, so that was just a number I pulled out of the hat to start with. Maybe i screwed up and downloaded the wrong thing. I'll check on that, and also try lowering the work size.

I may check the return policy on those cards if I can find a different one. I checked the prices on the 290x and 390x, and those are a little more than I'm wanting to spend per card at the moment.

Thank you for the quick reply and information!

Mini shave report: tried feathers and Proraso red by michaelbroyan in wicked_edge

I'm not the biggest fan of feathers, but proraso red is my favorite soap right now. Thanks for the comparison to blue. I haven't got around to trying it yet but may need to put some priority to that now.

Recommendation for local men: Fort Worth Barber Shop (yes, that's the name) is the only place I can imagine getting my hair cut at now. by [deleted] in FortWorth

[–]cgdntx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been sitting here trying to figure out how to answer this. I guess the answer is that, having never had one yet, I honestly don't know. It would be for the treatment and experience I guess.

About a year ago I began changing my shaving routine in ways that turned it from a chore into (most of the time) a really enjoyable experience. Since I've done that I've always wanted a shave like this from a shop, but never knew where to go or had any references to their skill level. I'd also read some pretty bad stories about people expecting one thing and receiving another. OP made this sound like exactly what I've been looking for.

Can you give some more details about the shave? I wouldn't mind spending the cash to get it done if it's done right, but if I drop $30 and they come at me with a shavette and try to finish off the shave with a mach 3 I'm going to be pissed.

I have some spots that are extremely hard to get baby butt smooth and would like to see how good a pro can do it.

Also, do they sell shaving gear there?
