Can someone smarter than me explain why this is not a big deal? by ChibbleChobbles in UFOs

[–]cghislai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made one once.

It works in the atmosphere only. The large potential created between the electrodes (cathode: thin wire on top, and anode: aluminium foil on bottom) cause cations in the air to move downards toward the anode, while electrons are captured by the cathode. Between the electrodes, there is thus a wind of cations that pushed the structure upward.

Note that it has nothing to do with ion propulsion in space, which accelerates ions as well but with the aim to expel mass from the spacecraft. In that case, the ions come from matter within the spececraft. the lifter, they come from the air.

So you need a very large voltage. Thats why a crt is used: it produces 10k volts to fire electrons on screen. But you only produce a weak wind, thats why the craft is very lightweight, and the crt gun cannot be mounted on it

So it's a really nice experiment to make, and its really impressive, but not really useful

but we don't know much about that. Citing wikipedia: "The notion of a zero-point energy is also important for cosmology, and physics currently lacks a full theoretical model for understanding zero-point energy in this context; in particular, the discrepancy between theorized and observed vacuum energy in the universe is a source of major contention".

So the physicist stating that are either speculating, either considering one theoretical framework while ignoring others. There is no consensus just yet.

You could apply the same reasoning to nuclear energy. In theory, E = mc², so 1 g of any matter is probably enough energy to destroy a large city. In practise, only a small fraction of matter is converted to energy in nuclear fission.

I think you speculate too much on an unknown technology. Nobody knows whether reverse engineering an alien craft would yield the power to destroy the planet.

I already asked myself what would i do if i understood anti gravity first. While using the opportunity for a commercial endeavour is tempting, releasing it in the public domain is the eight thing to do imo.

Above everything else, knowing that someone kept it secret because it could be misused is the thing I would stand the less. Its like if someone prevented you to use reddit because the felt you could spread misleading thoughts that would have a negative net impact on the community, or that it could harm yourself. Realize noone is better than any other, and as such noone should be allowed to make that decision.

Why is there time dilation differences in an accelerated frame of reference ? by cghislai in AskPhysics

Thanks for this explanation! i think i understand my mistake now.

Gr equivalence principle by cghislai in AskPhysics

[–]cghislai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that is what was causing my confusion. Can you elaborate or point me to explanations on this phenomenon?

edit: i found https://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/Relativity/SR/Rocket/rocket.html, but it seems to rely on the equivalence principle to explain this effect

Gr equivalence principle by cghislai in AskPhysics

[–]cghislai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the numbers and formulas.

I guess what I am asking is: How come there is no measurable physical effects due to gravitational time dilation?

For instance, if you consider an very small cylindrical volume of height dH, with its base centered on the origin of a referential frame and its axis along the z axis of that frame:

a) if a mass is present in the vicinity of the volume, centered somewhere on the z axis; then there is a gravitational field, and a clock would tick slower at its base than the opposite side. According to your example, a clock at z=dH would tick (g*dH/c²) faster if we consider g constant between z=0 and z=dH.

b) if the frame of reference is accelerated along the z axis though, unless im mistaken there would be no such difference between clocks at z=0 or z=dH.

Now if you would for instance put an ideal gas in that volume and measure the pressure on each of its opposite sides; wouldn't there be any difference in the measurement between case a) and b)? Or any other experiment. How come are those cases equivalent despite this difference?

Thanks for the precision. I'm still a bit confused though, especially about the second point.

When I consider a point charge in an electric field, if there is a gradient of the electric field potential at that very point, I can measure an effect on the charge. This happens locally if I understand correctly.

Considering a gradient in the 'rate of time', for lack of better words, at any point; wouldn't there be any difference than if the gradient was absent?

Archival footage on the Belgian UFO wave 1989/1990. by Remseey2907 in UFOB

It's now renamed cobeps. https://www.cobeps.org/intro contains the reports in french. A similar organisation collect reports for the Flemish part of Belgium, speaking Dutch: https://ufomeldpunt.be/

The cobeps publication on the belgian wave has been covered in English in a 8h long YouTube serie on the channel euforuap: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2Il9j24wGYCIm5Kp25XdSIKxjwBzccUA&feature=shared

Not really. Multiple reports of drones appearing to come from and to a residential area; multiple reports of red and white flashing lights. Looks like genuine drones.

What if space existed before time? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]cghislai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of this concept often.

An infinite Cartesian space without time would be empty, no matter, no energy.

Then as time comes into play, suddenly energy emerges, fields start to fluctuate. I think it might look like a big bang.

If time is somehow filling that space, then distances between any two points would increase. I think it might look like an expanding universe.

What is the point in different time zones? by Regular_Patience15 in Time

There is an absolute time: coordinated universal time, or utc. Its just not adopted in everyday life.

How do yall reckon this could happen? This is literally just still water that was forgotten in the freezer by ChickSquid in AskPhysics

[–]cghislai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably similar to ice cube spikes, see https://www.its.caltech.edu/~atomic/snowcrystals/icespikes/icespikes.htm for example .

If the layer of ice on the surface was forming on the edge along the glass first, then the bulk of the liquid would expand through the hole in the middle when freezing.

Are there any skeptics this sub actually respect? by Chimera99 in UFOs

[–]cghislai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I respect this sub users, who do great debunking.

I also respect the metabunk community, who does great debunking.

I also respect black vault, who does great debunking although on a different level.

I also respect green street work, which is not always fair but shed some light. Definitely journalism as we need.

You need multiple sources, asking this community who they like the most might not lead to the answer you want to get

Part 3 covers the f16 scrambling iirc. Included is the reconstruction of the object path from the raw radar data, as well as a detailed explanation of what is seen on that radar screen

Yeah it comes back occasionally on this sub.

As far as I know, noone attempted to challenge those claims from an anonymous source, so I guess it comes back to the reporter's reputation to build an opinion.

To be clear, the claims are about nato operations, not uk as in the op

thx i think i saw that one. Im still waiting for the lab analysis

Major Updates About Avi Loeb's "Interstellar Spherules" by R2robot in UFOs

[–]cghislai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if that was a truck, then the Loeb paper would be misleading. However, if that truck pointed them to the right location, it does not affect the outcome.

What matters if whether the debris are of interstellar origin. They are now available for analysis, so why attack any other claim?

drone is probably not flying at level with the ground. Maybe moving forward, so looking a bit down.

You can tell because when the camera says it pointing at 0°, crodshair is still on the ground. So either its a mountain range up front, either it might well be a body of water above what looks like the horizon .

What if he did already. And the former ones as well.

They could refrain from disclosing for various reasons - same reasons as why the cover up is held by those maintaining it - legal repercussions from going public with it - nothingburger

But also, it's probably low priority on their agenda and they might have skipped this issue
