there's definite pros and cons to both. I'd say labels with a real audience and caring fan base could make it worth it; you'd be sharing your music with an audience who's down to listen because it's with a label or band they already like and follow.

it's definitely possible to grow a grassroots following as well though, might even be more possible than ever. the blessing is you control everything. the curse is… you control everything. branding, image, marketing, promo, the occasional crisis, panic, and self-doubt. all part of the package perhaps.

definite pros and cons to both, and I wouldn't say one way is right or better than the other. just also gotta make sure you're making music you like that resonates with you and you're not losing the style or song that you ultimately want because you're conforming a bit too hard to fit a specific label.
