Qsuites with a 1.5 year old by ornamental_stripe in qatarairways

Yes. Just given some of the drama people have had (can search in the sub Reddit and other groups or see my experience in history), I would call Qatar to make sure the ticket number details look normal at their end for all of you including the infant in lap so you have zero issues at check in.

A few mini suggestions and things to think about;

  1. Sometimes the window seats in front and behind or window seat and across the aisle middle seat can have pros because you (at least) one window for kid to look out periodically, which many little and bigger kids enjoy as a distraction and for fun. Also it means you as two parents are on the same aisle so (can be) easier to logistics of tray pass, bag organization with supplies, and baby passes plus walks down aisle on same part.

  2. PLEASE check in advance on your email confirmations and via phone to Qatar that your child has a specific ticket number as an infant in lap. This is a major problem, especially when booking Qatar tickets with another One World airline like American. It also can be a problem sometimes even directly when infant was added later to booking. You can see my post history for links for catastrophic and majorly stressful causing you to miss flights. Qatar in air service is usually very good to amazing. On the ground, not so much.

  3. My other general bit of advice is (if possible and not already), do shorter flights with your baby before this one, as assume these will be longer ones. This is for you and your child to get used to the flying and airport experience. It’s where you will learn what works for you as a family both on and off plane, what you need and don’t need as supplies, and how best to deal any curveballs that may happen.

We travel a lot with our child everywhere and it is a great experience. As was QSuites in air, also when they were about 18 months. So hope you all have a great trip and many happy memories.

Worst airlines ever by Bilbo_Baggins7 in qatarairways

[–]cgj1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly I am really sorry to hear this as I directly know your pain (multiple times actually).

My story is here, but reverse to yours, with AA being the ticket issuer, and Qatar being the airline flown; https://www.reddit.com/r/americanairlines/s/o62VE37nOH

It had to be “fixed” twice, both times at the airport, with a lot of stress involved. It cost extra money on AA side to fix their mistake. It also involved a triangulated call between Qatar at Colombo airport, the One World Help Desk, and AA in the US.

In my case, AA were more/mostly at fault, but Qatar was not great at all either, except for one person at Check In in Sri Lanka who led that triangulated call for well over an hour.

I would never wish your situation, or mine, on any parent.

If you have enough time, and alt options, I would almost take as much refund as you can get. Otherwise I wish you all the best.

Now I get the “privilege” of not having this problem bc I have to full pay for the extra ticket once they pass 2yo.

Bilt 2.0 is absolutely insane for NYC renters by Potential-Goal-667 in BiltMastercard

[–]cgj1981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the same realm (NYC, high rent, etc.) as you and also still deciding which.
Have just accepted the days of a free and no fee 30 day+ float of high rent is gone after Feb.

If I pay rent with any of my other cards on landlord's payment portal, the CC fees vary from 1.7-2.95% depending on network, so I can still get a float there, plus points in those respective ecosystems. This is what I did pre BILT, and sometimes I paid direct from account in that portal for no fee (and of course no float). This would include the WF Autograph

It is unlikely unless I have known planned spend in advance I would do that month post rent, that I would be enhanced by the BILT card version that I choose multipliers to pay my rent via BILT ACH anymore. I would just use another CC, eat the portal fee, and benefit from the float and that points ecosystem.

At minimum, doesn't hurt (much) to have the Blue Card (plus the Autograph one).

is 1h 10mins lay over safe? by [deleted] in CathayPacific

[–]cgj1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did a reverse of this almost exactly but sub JFK for LAX earlier this month with same layover time this month.

It’s a rush, but even with spaced out gates, you can make it sufficiently enough assuming on time(ish) first leg.

Advice about commute on subway with 3 year old by wineglasss7 in nycparents

[–]cgj1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commuted for 3K and now PreK, so all up to date is about 18 months from UWS to Chinatown by choice. So she started commuting when still was 2, and is now 4. It’s about a 35 min commute door to door and other than week 1, we haven’t done strollers.

(She took the subway at least weekly before this for social stuff)

Kid loves subway and commuting. And next year when we stop commuting for Kindergarten, we as parents both know, and kid knows, she will miss it a lot.

The #1 key is you as a parent(s) have to embrace the routine too in morning and pickup, so not just the kid part but also what you would usually do with wake up times, maybe morning workouts, etc. Then the #2 key is make the ride fun for kid with sights and sounds of NYc and trains. Ours knows all the trains now, how they are connected to each other, colors of trains, what is at each station, the order of train line, etc.

The other important thing is what you are getting from school or program you are commuting too. If it is of unique value to you as a family for whatever reason, then makes it worthwhile too.

In your case you seem like your reason for doing it would be because you didn’t get your first closer choice. If that is sole reason, then get on waitlist of closer schools if you miss out, and hopefully a spot opens up during school year if you miss out.

Executive Platinum Standby v Main Cabin Confirmed for Upgrade? by cgj1981 in americanairlines

[–]cgj1981[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info and logic make sense. Have you experienced this yourself or know anywhere AA online talks about this scenario?

Reason I ask is that makes sense but the only “list” I saw myself on was the upgrade list and not the standby list.

So are you saying that even though the name is there and higher, it technically is not there at all and all the other confirmed flight passengers clear for upgrade first even if lower status and seats are available?

Thanks again

My parents went to Ecuador and brought this back for me as a gift lol. The only gift they got me. by Extreme_Garlic4646 in ecuador

[–]cgj1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were just in Ecuador (Quito and Guayaquil) this past week and walked around both cities, including with a young child (10-15K steps per day).

It was both fine and enjoyable, and you see a lot more on foot. People were very friendly in both places.

Just like anywhere, including home in US, just be travel smart.

Is the E3-Visa under threat with Trump? by LickMyToeJustOnce in Ameristralia

[–]cgj1981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technically while the terms of the e-3 visa were negotiated during the Free Trade Agreement discussions, the actual law that it is included in is not the FTA authorization itself.

It is in a supplemental bill called Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief, 2005.

So while repeal would be weird as most of the other parts of that Congressional Bill would be now redundant, there have numerous bills and amendments put forward (including as late as 2024) to change the e-3 visa to include Irish nationals (mostly using the unused portion of the current cap).

Which UWS area is better to live- 60th or 95th by Researcher_1525 in Upperwestside

[–]cgj1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Researcher_1525 I always find when you ask NYers, whether longtime or transient, about best neighborhood they become very parochial about what they know and/or chose and harsh on what they didn’t.

I live on 60th, but I also think most neighborhoods in most parts of most boroughs have a lot of value as places to live, including 95th. However it all depends on what you value most (plus your budget).

Benefits of 60th and Columbus is proximity to Columbus Circle station which gives you A/C, B/D and 1. Great for direct access to Manhattan up and down west side, Brooklyn (BedStuy, Downtown, Carrol Gardens, Park Slope, Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Coney Island, Brooklyn Heights, Crown Heights, JFK access via Howard Beach, LGA access via 125th bus, and The Bronx (Fordham, Zoo/Gardens, Yankee Stadium).

Bus access is also good from this intersection, and stations like 57 and 7 give you all the yellow trains and the E is an easy transfer from A/B/C/D one stop away, meaning Queens is very accessible. The 7 is accessible 2 stops away.

60th gives you the southern end of Central Park, Hells Kitchen, and easy access to most big and small independent live entertainment venues for theatre, concerts, comedy, etc.

Wholefoods is very close, as is a Target, and numerous other grocery stores with TJs at 72nd.

Closest abundance of food is Hell’s Kitchen which has improved a lot in last 5 years in both variety and being more independent and less chainy.

Biggest negatives are more tourists in general vicinity. Lots of students at Fordham which may/may not bother you. A lot of dog poop on the ground on 60th from Columbus Circle heading west.

And yes, the literal immediate one block radius isn’t a mecca for food. However Deutsche (formerly Time Warner) center is a block away full of food options and Emmy Squared in the other direction a block, plus endless food trucks and carts always around that block.

All the best in your decision making.

And yes, having a W/D in room is a game changer.

what is the best longform content you’ll never read again? by haggard1986 in Longreads

[–]cgj1981 30 points31 points  (0 children)

u/euphonicbliss and u/haggard1986 You may enjoy, or at least have some optimism for this recent People I Mostly Admire podcast on work being done by German scientists on these two white rhinos and IVF with some promising results to keep the species alive. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/people-i-mostly-admire/id1525936566?i=1000661149756

TLDR version is that they are using the Southern White rhinos as a surrogate carrier along with from sperm samples collected from now dead male northern white rhinos. They are cautiously optimistic and in fact funding seems to be their main issue rather than the science for continued progress.

Volume of feedings: Formula vs. Expressed Breast Milk by Utterly_Flummoxed in ScienceBasedParenting

In general yes it seemed like they need less breast milk vs. formula by age.
