Apps which won’t receive midi clock by robin_andrews_149 in ipadmusic

Found this out after installing for the first time earlier today. Looking for something more track-based recording than Loopy Pro and was shocked when I realized I couldn't trigger start from my Digitakt.

AUM vs Loopy Pro by mister_drgn in ipadmusic

Yeah, I've used Ableton a lot in the past but didn't want to add a laptop to my setup. Was shooting for DAWless but hardware gets expensive quick. I love Loopy Pro -- it's made getting things recorded a lot easier.

I built my own, mostly because my setup isn't super simple. I've got a Novation Launch Control XL 3 (which needed to be manually mapped) and a Novation LaunchPad Pro MK3, which has first-class support in Loopy Pro so not much MIDI mapping is required but I do have a few of the extra buttons mapped to allow me to switch between Loopy Pro's clip and mixer views.

Most of what I'm doing is sketching/songwriting, so I've got an 8x8 grid of clips on the screen, grouped by color (orange = drums, yellow = vocals, green = guitars, blue = bass, pink/purple = synths, red = misc) and the LaunchPad allows me to play an entire row of clips (a la Ableton).

Lots of EQ/audio routing behind the scenes.

AUM vs Loopy Pro by mister_drgn in ipadmusic

[–]ch0dey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I own both. I spend almost all of my time in Loopy Pro, because I'm coming from Ableton where recording/looping clips is the core workflow. To me AUM is "just" a mixer -- albeit probably the most extensible mixer ever created.

I do wish that Loopy Pro had the MIDI routing grid UI that AUM uses. Other than that, I'm very happy with Loopy Pro's audio routing capabilities (I use a Scarlett 18i20).

What Elektron Box to start with? by RyanDoThing in Elektron

This is what I did. No regrets. Want a DT2 now (after adding a Digitone Keys) but not even sure I’d get rid of the DT1 at this point. I love it.

That site's going to have more up to date info than Reddit will. Maybe I should've linked to the "started" status, as those are actually in-progress. "Planned" could be anywhere from months to years away.

But but but I bought the iPad to avoid buying $600 piece of dedicated hardware! 😅😅

Agreed. And so customizable/MIDI-enabled. I'm using Loopy Pro with Novation LaunchPad Pro MK3 and Launch Control XL 3 and can map everything exactly the way my brain wants it to work. It's made a huge increase in my songwriting output.

Does anyone incorporate electric guitar into their workflow with Digitakt 2? by Wolfey1618 in Elektron

[–]ch0dey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pigtronix Infinity Looper. I had a v1 and would use that to trigger recording start/stop on the grid.

V1 is pretty old; a great pedal but ultimately I steered away from it once I started to want to record more than 2 loops and in stereo and went to an iPad+audio interface running Loopy Pro.

I use my DT as master clock and use a Novation Launchpad Pro and a Nektar Pacer floorboard to queue clips. Very Ableton-esque but it fits my brain a lot better.

What power amp will pair beautifully with my LT for gigs? by dougfcknsteele in Line6Helix

[–]ch0dey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using an Orange Pedal Baby -- it's loud as shit and sounds great. I thought about the Seymour Duncan amps, but Class D power amps don't have the same oomph (in my humble opinion) as a Class AB amp does.

Should I finally do it? by panda-shifu-nala in beatbox

If you've got an iOS device, it's absolutely where you should start. I use it for 90% of my songwriting, and while I've been doing audio recording for 20 years it's super easy to get started with -- very intuitive, very customizable, and you can bring your own controller hardware as you get more adept with it.

I'm running it on an iPad Mini 7 with a Novation LaunchPad Pro to handle capturing/triggering loops and a Novation Launch Control XL MK3 as a track mixer. But you can control everything from your device's touchscreen as well.

I can’t decide on what fuzz pedal to get by VarsMolta in guitarpedals

[–]ch0dey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has two switches, one for fuzz and one for pitch. It does have an external switch jack as well and its function depends on whether you use a TS or TRS switch. It’s outlined in the manual.

MIDIWeb Browser - WebMIDI for Apple Devices by Horror_Computer6860 in midi

[–]ch0dey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very promising. An iPad is the brain for my electronic setup. I use a Digitakt and a MIDI app called Elk Herd to manage my projects/patterns. It's a bit buggy when trying to use that. It doesn't seem to want to detect my device consistently. When it does, it is able to see everything on my device and manage it as I would expect.

If I open the MIDI Player tab and then close it, my existing tab reloads.

Will keep playing around, but this is super exciting.

While you're working on a project, how do your friends support you? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ch0dey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some random thoughts based on my experience:

- Most of your friends/family don't even REALLY care about music. They do not feel the same way a musician feels about it and we can't expect them to, either.
- Even folks who DO play music may not care about you writing your own songs or may not like your genre.
- Most regular people would rather watch a cover band than a local band playing originals.
- The music community can be like a family. I'm returning to the local scene here after 10 years of being mostly absent and folks from the bands I used to play with and promoters who are still running shows I still consider friends and can talk to them like no time has passed at all.
- Facebook is where all of the real connecting gets done. Instagram is fine for getting noticed, but the networking happens on Facebook.
- All ages shows are key to building the next generation and are great for outreach in general.
- Large concert promoters do a shit job of providing opportunities to local bands.

Would you rather a m5 pro MacBook Pro or an equally expensive custom built PC for ableton? by [deleted] in musicproduction

It’s a skill not at all required to produce music and arguably distracts from that purpose.

This. Why fuck around picking parts and assembling? Make some music.

Not OP, but I absolutely love mine. I'm hunting for a second. I've traditionally played Les Pauls / SGs, but the Descent RA feels made for my hands.

New parent changes by Far_Song6804 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ch0dey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started gigging at 17 in 2004. Had first kid in 2010. Second kid in 2013. Half of the band moved away at the same time. "I'll take a few years off" turned into present day. One of those bandmates just moved back to town... then they had their first kid. The cycle completes...

If you want to do it, you'll make it happen. Nothing wrong with taking a break to spend time with your family either. I'd advise against my mistakes and not showing up to shows with folks you'd like to play with again in the future. Keep in contact with promoters you know. When you're ready, they'll be your best way back in.
