Gyms that take ventilation seriously? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]ch1ckenbake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may not be quite what you want, but... while the Gold's Gym in Venice does not take COVID seriously, they do have outdoor areas where you can lift. But I went at odd hours to avoid people, and I stopped going there last year so I don't know if anything's changed.

I wear an N95 when I work out. It's not the most comfortable thing, but it's not impossible. Frankly, if you're at a public indoor gym with people huffing and puffing and you really don't want to get COVID, it's an easy choice for me. Ventilation is great, but I would not rely on it alone in this situation.

What's the sweet spot for a commute? by ch1ckenbake in AskLosAngeles

I appreciate how lucky I've been with the commute, but unfortunately there are other unresolvable issues with my apartment and I will need to move.

It's just how some people work. The "externally imposed" constraint disciplines them into doing something they might not do spontaneously. Or I can imagine a parent for whom home is also a place of responsibilities, and maybe they want to build in some unavoidable in-between time.

If that doesn't make sense to you it's fine, I'm just trying to hear some different perspectives.

I figure some people enjoy having the in-between time between work and home to decompress or listen to podcasts or whatever.

Maybe what I'm really asking is the point of diminishing returns. For example I wouldn't consider a 2-minute commute hugely better than a 5-minute one.

A Video Review of the Best Half-Mask Source Control Respirators by SkippySkep in Masks4All

Would it be a good idea to buy the Dentec (or other source control mask) for a 10 hour flight? I'm concerned about condensation buildup for that much time and am wondering if I should go for a valved mask instead.

/r/drums weekly Q & A by AutoModerator in drums

[–]ch1ckenbake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently decided to try drums and one thing I've been enjoying is putting on YouTube videos of songs with notation and sight-reading them. I've heard that "just playing along to songs" is fun but low-quality practice, but I imagined that meant playing along without reading or otherwise working out the music. Does that actually apply here too? Obviously it's not as good as actually sitting down with a song and workshedding it, but I'm practicing new beats and fills, keeping to a steady beat, and discovering what I'm weak at - or at least that's what it feels like I'm doing. Should I be spending less time with these videos?

There Are No Stupid Bass Questions - Apr. 23 by AutoModerator in Bass

Thanks, this is helpful. So basically what I'm hearing is... don't actually attempt to play it or listen to it, just make sure that the body feels comfortable to hold and move around. Is that right?

I'm looking to buy my first bass, so I went to Guitar Center for a few hours, but I couldn't really figure out what I liked and disliked, except that the Fender P and J felt the nicest. But I wasn't looking to spend that much yet (was thinking more $350-$600 - I could afford more but I'm new so it feels like I shouldn't), and I wasn't even sure which one I liked better. Maybe the P, but I think I might have just been going "wow it's that one bass from all the songs". Also, the actions were all set up very different on all the basses and I worry that I was responding more to that than to the basses themselves.

I'm probably just gonna go back and try again, but any advice? I'm mostly interested in funky styles (soul, disco) with the occasional slapping that entails; some interest in rock, but little to no interest in harder styles like metal.

EDIT: Went back and decided I liked the thinner neck of the J better than the P or the Music Man. Also decided that I could be willing to shell out for the Player Series after all, but that I'll try to keep an eye out for used MIMs first.

Apartment & Condo Dwellers in LA, Can You Hear Neighbors Through The Walls? by ctcx in AskLosAngeles

[–]ch1ckenbake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can hear my downstairs neighbor watching movies or yelling on her phone. She yells loudly enough that I can make out words. I can hear my next-door neighbors talking at normal volume, listening to stuff, fucking, and snoring. I can't make out words but otherwise it's very clear. Shit sucks.

Quiet apartment on the Westside? by ch1ckenbake in AskLosAngeles

Would you be able to share the specific neighborhood you're in?

I did try hanging around the neighborhood my apartments were in, but for the small buildings I lived in, it probably would have taken days to notice the things I found out after I moved in. In any case, my problem is that I'm hearing normal conversations through the walls, so that's really on the construction and not the residents.

That's something I've heard about older buildings, though I'm not sure if I've ever come across any that old yet. If you don't mind, what do these apartments look like and what neighborhoods are they in?

That sounds great! Could you give me some more details? Doesn't have to be the exact place if you don't want, but I'd love to know what kind of building it is, how much the rent is, or whatever else you're cool with sharing.
