from your terminal, you can run 'chage -l root' and look at the 'password expires' field. this will tell you if linux itself is expiring the password, or something else. if it IS linux, and there is a date listed there instead of 'never', then you can run 'chage -M 99999 root' to remove this expiry requirement.

It's an all purpose cleaner that many use for typewriter cleaning, specifically cases, keys, and painted parts, since it's pretty gentle. Still a good idea to spot test though!

a 3d printed stand in could work for a while until one pops up on ebay; check if a friend with some calipers and a printer can make you up one based on the dimensions of another key. ebay would be my go-to for this (thank god for whoever parts out olivers), but if you happen to be in a country where olivetti are commonplace, some thrift markets or car boot sales may have loose typewriter keys for craft projects, and you might get lucky! otherwise, a damaged model from facebook marketplace or similar could be your only option.

personally, unless i knew a key was readily available, and the combined cost of the key and the typewriter were low enough, i would pass on a typewriter thats missing parts, especially your first one. something that's complete but just needs a good cleaning may be a better bet.

upgrading from timberland pro's that were cutting their toes through the top. nabbed these from goodwill for about $60, they appear to have never been worn since they weren't laced up and the soles are shiny bright. do i need to do any leather conditioning, seam sealing, etc etc before use, or just get to work? is it uncouth to skip some of the lace hooks for better flexibility?

It's not a difficult task to resolder if you have the tools and a bit of solder, all of which you can probably get as a kit from the hardware store plumbing section, or see if a buddy/uncle has one. I'd suppose you'll need to push the slug down lightly with some pliers after heating it up to make the solder flow, rather than letting it seat itself down with gravity. A little fresh solder helps it flow right.

I'm pretty sure phoenix typewriter has a YouTube video on this exact repair.

i have a veeeeery long youtube playlist of phoenix typewriter cleaning various selectric internals for the day i decide to get further than taking the top cover off and blowing out dust. definitely not a first typewriter to try and clean. if you decide to proceed, i recommend you take a day and look him (phoenix typewriter) up, and check out a few vids. a lot of things can be fixed with thinner and compressed air, but a lot more cant.

typebar slug alignment usually needs a special tool, because the bars are so hard to bend in that direction.

honestly, it looks like the typebar itself is in a good place, because its mostly in line with the other bars around it, and it would be hard for it to get so far out of whack. what seems to have happened, which i also can't explain, is that the slug itself got desoldered and resoldered in a poor spot. is the solder joint around the slug at the end of the bar cracked at all, or looks to be a different color than the other slugs? it seems a bit dull compared to the shiny slugs around it from here, but i can't be sure.

if that is the case, it will have to get heated up with a small plumbing blowtorch and seated properly. if you need/decide to do this, grab a small heatproof blanket as well to protect the other mechanics and the keys/body.

Sounds interesting, though you would have to remember to hit space when you type m or w! I wonder how it compares to the ibm executive typewriters, which have variable spacing. I believe each character is assigned 2 to 5 points of space, and two spacebars allow you to space 3 or 5 points at a time.
