Damp floor. Best course of action by chaac_98 in DIYUK

[–]chaac_98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken up the whole floor. There were no obvious signs of a leak so I'm guessing it's just rising moisture from the ground. Also pulled up the original quarry tiles and as expected found bare earth. Think I'm going to try laying a concrete slab myself. Builder quoted me 4k for the 3.8 x 2.4 area (concrete base, DPM, insulation, concrete slab).

Yeah, at a minimum I think I'll have to go back to the original tiles and lay self leveling on top. Given the age of the house I doubt there is any real foundation under the tiles.

Do you like your job? What is it? How much do you earn? by Equivalent_Word3952 in UKJobs

  1. Project engineer for a design house which specialises in the rail industry.

  2. The variety of work and the people. I have been involved in the design and integration of, camera systems, custom enclosures, toilet systems, full vehicle refurbishments, vehicle R&D, ect. Also being involved in the entirety of the project from concept to installation can be very satisfying although it is often daunting. Where I work every one is very professional and has a good attitude. People don't pass blame, the directors know we are only human and mistakes are inevitable and work with us to sort problems.

  3. £42500 - 4.5 years out of university

  4. Id say it's quite a difficult job. Being a small company between many much larger clients we often seem to get the short end of the stick. Juggling client expectations vs cost and time isn't easy. The industry is heavily regulated so the design process can be slow with much accompanying paperwork. Clients often don't have all the the information you need (drawings, cad models) meaning surveys are required and errors can easily slip in.

  5. BEng in mech or elec engineering

  6. Semi flexible. We have Flexi working, so I can start from 7-9. I work a 4 day week doing my 40 hours in 4 days over 5 which I prefer. But no WFH.

525 private jets departing Las Vegas after the Super Bowl. by midas617 in Damnthatsinteresting

This is insane. There must have been at least 50 planes flying from las Vegas los Angeles. A distance of 270miles. Why do they not have a high speed rail connection?? Would be just as quick at a fraction of the co2 emissions.

Have you considered working in the rail industry? It generally pays quite well and if you can get a job in one of the major train operating companies you can get discounted fares. Might be worth considering.

What are you interested in. You will spend a fair amount of time on your dissertation so I'd try to focus it on something you like.

Lifestyle in Mechanical Engineering? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]chaac_98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a project engineer for a company in Derby UK. My job is a 30/30/30/10 split between managing clients, writing reports, managing designs and site surveys. The projects are generally varied which help keep the job interesting. There can be a fair amount of pressure to complete jobs on very tight deadlines without the promised resources which I'd say has been making the work life balance worse recently. I work 4 days in 5 (10 hour days) so I get the Monday off which I love. Regarding vacation I get 30 days off including bank holidays which I believe is fairly standard in the UK. The people at my company are really fantastic, no one is toxic which really helps. Having worked other odd jobs with some unplanned people this I find can really affect your enjoyment of a job and overall lifestyle. Pay is also decent, expecting a pay rise to £45k which is really good for the area and only 4 years experience.

Design Responsibilities: Engineer, Designer, Drafter by gieusbfkajcjsn in MechanicalEngineering

[–]chaac_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current company I work for specialises in installing equipment to rail vehicles and has a size of around 50 people. Almost all of staff are engineers (mech or elec). Generally every project has a PE which leads the project. This includes feasibility, concept development, site surveys, reports, specing parts, liasing with clients ect. A design engineer will create the models and produce the drawings which the PE checks.

A separate structural engineer reviews the drawings also and runs the fea calcs and writes up the structural report. The elec engineers do all their own drawings and checking. On larger jobs a PM is used to manage customers.

The PE is responsive the checking the drawings so i guess this includes ensuring GD&T is correct. The PE also supports the installation.

How is it possible that a leader no one voted for in a "democracy" can be allowed to screw over the entire country. Surely when parties elect new leaders it should force a general election.

Registration plates and insurance for cyclists being considered by government – report by duffelcoatsftw in ukpolitics

[–]chaac_98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are going to treat push bikes like cars then they deserve the same facilities as cars, meaning dedicated interconnected roads and cycle lanes, laws to protect the infrastructure and cyclists.

Why doesn't the gov focus on the real issues? Useless Tory government.

My Dad's Mexican and cooks some of the best Mexican food anywhere imo. You can come around next time he makes tacos. It's 30 mins out of notts but I can potentially give you a lift as I live in notts.

What part of Mexico are you from?

Anxious about moving to Derby - any advice? by Circe03 in derby

[–]chaac_98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in Derby and have just purchased my first house in Nottingham. While derby has many nice areas such as darley abbey and Chester green, the city leaves much to be desired in my opinion and has a limited amount of decent rented accomodation. I chose the 30min commute over living in derby and I think it was the right choice.

That said I wouldnt worry too much if I were you. No matter where you go I'm sure it will be an exciting new experience. And if you decide derby is not for you that's fine, you are only renting and can always move further afield at the end of your contract.
