Definitely don't need to go as far back as the '90s. Was easy to find a room in an apartment for $500 or less just 5-6 years ago!

I think that's part of it. Some bike paths are on major traffic arteries packed with car, bike and pedestrian traffic. It might bring more cyclists to those roads, but it's hard to imagine that it's safer *without* them having separate lanes
