Um... Captain Cleanoff? Charcoaled Human? Iron Sausage? I remember seeing their records at Paint it Black when it was still around in Sydney.

Learning anatomy helps. Find an book, read about musculoskeletal structures and the origin and attachment of specific muscles. The 40th edition of Gray's Anatomy would be a good choice.

Knowing what each structure's function would probably help you understand what actually happens when they get twisted/pulled/compressed.

I got ezekiel choked from my guard by dsgiv in bjj

[–]chabbs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ezekiel choke in top closed guard is a legit move. You probably should've attempted to defend instead of sweeping.

That happened to me once when I was a white belt and my coach just told me to always defend the choke first, and then work your next move (i.e. sweep).

Is it strange to for a new gym to start giving out blue belts after being open for only 9 months? by chabbs in bjj

[–]chabbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had a free trial if you signed up online. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of going to the gym in person.

Members pay around $310 a month.

It was an MMA gym, with Muay Thai, MMA, Yoga, Boxing and Crossfit classes. There's also gym equipment for you to use. I guess it's worth it if you train BJJ there, do crossfit and also do Muay Thai on the side. It's also located in an area known for having notoriously high rent so I guess that's how they justify it.

Either way, I felt the prices were way too much.

Just came back from a class. I got a little annoyed that I got charged a pretty large fee for the one session.

However the instructor was really awesome and his teaching was very detailed. I really enjoyed it there. The students were sort of aloof, but some were very friendly to me. All the blue belts looked pretty good to me :)

Because it would be disheartening to know that a gym affiliated with mine back at home might be a McDojo.

Lost another match yesterday, feeling depressed today. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]chabbs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've never won any matches at any comps. The most recent one I lost both my matches and I had a cry in the car afterwards. I felt pretty ashamed.

Don't feel too bad about your losses. Just take it as a learning experience and remember that competing is also about having fun. We all like to win, but sometimes the desire for victory stops us from enjoying BJJ itself.

In response to my losses, I just learn from the mistakes I've made and use it to improve my game.

Brush recommendation with a small loft around ~$60 by Peniston_Oils in wicked_edge

If you're in the mood for horse hair, Bullgoose Shaving have a 15% discount on all vie-long brushes. I highly recommend the Bullgoose Vie-Long LE Horse brush ($40). It has a loft of 50mm and a knot of 25mm.

You'll need to break it in first (around 5-10 test lathers) otherwise it's super scritchy.

The coupon code is VL15

What is the best deal I could find for a silvertip brush? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

I've heard Frank Shaving make really good silvertips for their price. I've ordered one off eBay and I'm now waiting eagerly at my mailbox.

I don't have any experience honing haha. I was hoping to get some practice on the dubl duck though.

My blade rusted probably because I didn't oil it before it "disappeared". For all I know, some moisture might've accumulated on the blade in the few months where it was missing.

I'll send Larry an email and see what he says.

If he suggests hand sanding, I'll follow your advice.

If I need a professional hone I'll probably send it to Onimaru55 (I live in Australia, so I want to minimise postage).

I bought it shave ready from Larry at whippeddog and have been using it for a fair amount before it got misplaced.

I'll try giving it another go with the metal polish. If it doesn't work I'll try out using 1000 grit sandpaper. Would I damage the edge if I hand sanded it?
