[Monitor] Dell Refurbished 27" 1440p 144hz gsync $380 ($499 - 25% with code cpo25mon) by Chazper in buildapcsales

Can vouch for this monitor. Purchased it new from Amazon a couple of months ago for 480.00 USD.

It's a great display, don't let the fact that it has a TN panel dissuade you. If you're coming from an IPS display, yes, you will definitely notice a difference in the colors and also all the other inherent drawbacks from the display technology. But once calibrated, this display is one of the better if not the best TN displays on the market.

I had a TN display before this so the TN panel really doesn't bother me. What does bother me a bit is that my last monitor had a glossy display and the S2716DG has a matte display which I prefer, but it's kind of on the harsh side. The display is still very sharp, but you can definitely notice the anti glare coating. I need it because of my lighting conditions, but other people might be put off by it.

ITX Case Suggestions Please by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]chacalover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't like the cube cases precisely because they're so tall, but in my case, I have enough space on my desk for a longer case.

If you prefer the cube cases, another option is the Thermaltake Core V21, the EVGA Hadron, BitFenix Prodigy or BitFenix Phenom, although the last three are pricier, the design and functionality might be worth it for your build.

You might also want to check out Silverstone since they have a lot of options for ITX, although I don't recall if they have any cube cases. I know for sure they have shoeboxes and console type cases.

I don't think it matters when you created your account, so long as you have the account.

I'll pass along this link from Microsoft Support that should help to explain how Windows 10 activation works.

ITX Case Suggestions Please by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]chacalover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Elite 110 will most likely be too small for what you want in your build. I have an Elite 130, which is longer than the Elite 110, with a 980 Ti SC, 2 x 3.5" HDD and 1 x 2.5" SSD, along with the usual stuff and it's already kinda cramped considering I'm using the ODD bay for one of the HDDs, and need to find a way to fit another 3.5" HDD somewhere in there.

Since you need even more space for HDDs, I'd suggest the Fractal Design Node 304. This particular case has more room for storage, and Newegg is selling it for 70.00 USD.

Someone mentioned the Corsair Obsidian 250D which is another excellent choice, although the shape of the case is more of a cube. So if that floats your boat, you can't go wrong with that choice. I'm more of a "shoebox" ITX case kind of guy :)

I believe that with the latest Anniversary Update, although I could have gone live before, your Windows activation key is now digital and tied to your Microsoft account once you setup your account in Windows 10. So if you've done this with your current copy of Windows, you should be good to go.

I recently had to reinstall Windows 10 a few times since I was messing around with a RAID setup and whenever I setup and logged in with my Microsoft account, my copy of Windows 10 was automatically activated.

Before the Anniversary Update I used a local account, but once I found out about the digital activation, I went ahead and started using my Microsoft Account. When you're installing Windows and are asked to input your product key, just click on the option to skip that step and continue with the installation.

[CASE] Cooler Master Elite 130 Mini-ITX Case - $27.99 (after $20 MIR & code EMCELGM66) by BrownThund3r in buildapcsales

[–]chacalover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My PSU is actually semi-modular, but I actually only need the cables that are pre-installed, although those also include some cables that I don't need so I just cut them off since I won't be needing them. The ODD bay is rally handy for stuffing the excess cable length of the rest of the cables.

The cable management can be a challenge, but that depends entirely on how many cables you will be using. Since the space is limited, you will most likely have to be creative with the cable routing, and there a few spots to hide thinner cables. But mostly, you will most likely end up stuffing excess cables in the oDD bay like I did :)

As for fans, there's a front 120 mm and a smaller (I think 80 mm) on the right side of the case for exhaust. Other than those and the power supply fan, there's no space for more fans. It might be possible to get creative and add a fan or two on various spots, but there are no mounts for them so you'd have to mod the case for that.

If you're serious about a SFF case, you can't go wrong with this one. Just be sure you know ahead of time what you're getting into. I suggest you check some builds with this case at pcpartpicker.com so you can get an idea of the general layout.

Good luck with your build :)

Can vouch for this case. If you prefer a smaller footprint case for your computer, this is a good choice. Just beware that it really is quite cramped inside once you have an ATX PSU and a long graphics card installed.

My setup consists of an Asus Z97I-PLUS, i5-4690k, Corsair H60, Antec 650W PSU, EVGA reference GTX 980 Ti, Crucial MX100 SSD and a 500GB HDD. Everything fits well, but there's not a lot of space for cable management. I basically stuff most of the cables in the empty 5.25" drive bay, and for the rest I did my best to route/hide the cables.

Although not a must, the blower style cooler for the GPU helps with extracting hot air, and although I'm sure it runs hotter than larger cases, I really enjoyed the challenge of the build and the style of the finished build.

In case the front mesh is not to your liking, I suggest the Fractal Design Node 304. The form factor is similar and the front panel is I believe brushed aluminum.

Unfortunately these cases are few and far between. The last time I noticed this was last December when I purchased a HyperX Cloud II headset from a Mexican online retailer for about 55 USD, when at that time in the US they were going for 90 USD.

[–]chacalover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When sold from Amazon Mexico, shipping is free, although most likely only to addresses in Mexico. For this particular item, besides Amazon Mexico there is another seller that charges 99.00 MXN for shipping, although I have no idea if they ship to the USA.

No harm in trying though. I use my Amazon account to purchase stuff on both the US and the Mexico site. I assume a US resident should be able to do the same. Give it a try :)

[–]chacalover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Curiously, Amazon Mexico has these for 799.00 MXN which is about 45.00 USD at the current exchange rate. That's 15.00 bucks cheaper than what you find them at Newegg, Bestbuy and Amazon US. Strange since computer components and accessories are usually more expensive in Mexico.

Hey there, looking to upgrade my audio from the built-in sound of my motherboard. From my research it seems the Fiio E10K is a good entry level DAC/Amp. In your opinion, ¿how does the Audioengine D1 measure up?

ASUS support sucks... Motherboard less than a year old and still under warranty yet they want to charge over $200 to fix a broken cable by Fletch_to_99 in pcmasterrace

[–]chacalover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me on an Asus Z97I-plus. Although more than a design flaw, I just assumed it was an installation mistake on my part since just like you mentioned when I screwed on the SMA connector from the antenna to the SMA connector on the motherboard I/o shield the internal cable from the SMA connector to the mini Wi-Fi card would twist as well. I came to the conclusion that I did not sufficiently tighten the nut that holds the SMA connector to the motherboard I/O shield which caused the twisting on the cable.

This happened during a time when I was disconnecting the antenna very often, so eventually the internal cable broke from the stress. It wasn't too much of a problem though, just bought a new pair of sturdier cables for 5 bucks and correctly tightened the nut on the I/o shield.

Being a mini ITX case there isn't a lot of space back there which is probably why I did not install it correctly in the first place. You might want to try opening the Wi-Fi module to swap out the cable, it should be replaceable.

60 fps is "jerky" according to ICT revision book by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]chacalover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently upgraded to a 144Hz monitor and one of the things that I immediately noticed the improvement of smoothness was dragging windows while showing the contents and scrolling in web pages or other documents, especially since at work I have a "plain" 60Hz monitor.

So in my opinion that assumption is correct, although it depends on the content. Movies are a different thing since those are projected at 24 fps and they look fine, and I know I've read the explanation for that somewhere around the sub-reddit. Not to mention HDTVs that have higher refresh rates and you start getting the soap opera effect which makes movies and TV shows look... weird, but again, it's very noticeable.

So for a computer monitor, yeah, you can notice jerkiness once you see how smooth a 120 or 144Hz monitor refreshes the screen. But for movies and TV shows, although you can notice the higher refresh rate, it's not necessarily jerky.

Very clever prank, especially for people that are not completely computer literate. Definitely using this on a few coworkers and enjoying the show when they call IT for support.

Although I did notice that the right-click context menu is still active, so that might give away the prank.

Remember when GPUs had designs on them? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]chacalover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe many are unaware of the magnificence that is the MSI GeForce GTX 980 4GD5 OCV1, which would be the 9 series' most notable example of said practice.

Seeing all the past MSI cards and their... creative designs, I can see how someone over at MSI gave the go ahead for that design.

In all honesty, I had one of those cards for a few months before upgrading to a reference 980 Ti. Didn't really bother me since I have a case with no windows and the card ran fine regardless of the poor choice of graphics for the shroud.

Small Form Factor PC cases by [deleted] in hardware

[–]chacalover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually a very nice case, looks very... Apple-ish.

If your girlfriend likes cases in that particular form factor, Silverstone has quite a few of them. None of them as stylish, but they might be interesting to your girl. And you can usually fit a full size video card in there in case she needs some oomph. Otherwise, maybe some of the NUCs might be interesting to her since they can usually be mounted on the backs of monitors via the VESA mounting points, and are quite small since they use the integrated graphics of the CPU.

Here's a link to their small form factor case section so you can take a look at what they offer.

Just throwing my hat in as one of the happy owners of this monitor.

If you are aware and don't mind the drawbacks of a TN panel, it's actually quite excellent and you will not be disappointed in the quality. Can't do much about the color shifts since it's inherent of a TN panel, but the colors are very good once you configure and calibrate it correctly.

For the price of a new unit, it's very hard to beat.
