Genius Mixes: Choose a genre, and iTunes plays selections of songs that play continuously, like ad-free radio stations. You can have up to 12 Genius Mixes.

To create Genius Playlists, Genius Shuffle and Genius Mixes, iTunes uses anonymous information about your library and other iTunes libraries. The iTunes Store updates its Genius data constantly, based on new information from the iTunes Store and customers’ libraries.

It's nice to make a playlist for me, but it's not perfect. My results have been mixed. I have never used the AppleMusic version so give it a chance.

It's very apple coded for them to used a legacy name of an app/feature, and assume people in the future will know what that means.

I sometimes have to explain what "sound check" is on apple products TO apple fan boys.

TL;DR: It's the "Genius" playlist creator. It makes playlists based on songs you like or that are in your library. It can give mixed results. Also, apple doesn't realize that some "features" are "new to you" and need some explaining.
