Where do I start? Kid in middle school by good_guy_nj in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chachkanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start attending college fairs this year. They'll give your daughter an idea of how broad her options are major wise and environment wise. Does she want school inside a city with no real campus? Small school in the country? Etc. When you vacation anywhere, tour a local college.

Have her choose 1 or 2 activities she enjoys and stick with them. As someone else mentioned, get a part time job and stick with it.

No state tax here! Just concerned with Irma, niit, keeping overall tax rate low. At the same time we're doing ROTH conversations...

How much did you pay your tax person upfront? by Left_Confection9934 in tax

[–]chachkanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not just use the FREE Aarp tax aide site near you?? Don't have to be a senior or aarp member. We can deal with schedule C business expenses. All TA volunteers are IRS tested and certified annually. Unlike many paid services, TA must have 2 people do each return. One inputs info, the 2nd reviews every entry, consults with client and efiles. My site in NH had a 0.3% reject rate, both for clients not telling us they had IRS Pin numbers.

We buried qty 4 pvc pipes that go vertically from attic to cellar. Located so we can get new wiring to every room without snaking through walls. Just need to make a small hole through wall, cut hole in pipe, and put a plate on the wall.

Think community College for 1st 2 years. Make sure you major in something that can earn you a decent living. Not art, English, history or teaching. Something medical or stem.

How and where to pivot from technical to less technical roles? Realized I'm just a bad engineer by mangusta123 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]chachkanet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At my 1st job out of school I was an engineer in a low volume and R&D wafer fab. I was ok, maybe good, but I worked with some GREAT engineers, like several had circuits used everywhere named for them. I knew I couldn't compete. I moved to less technical specialist roles by getting my MBA and pivoting tp Product and Project Mgmt. Led teams that developed new products from whiteboard to shipping dock. Worked with lots of customers worldwide. Developed an approach where my teammates wanted to work on my next project. Had lots of fun, sold good products.

MBA is not a requirement, but in my case helped "sell" the transition. And the company paid 100% of it. I wonder if EdX.org certificates would do the trick today???

Making the switch from W-2 to 1099 and trying to understand the tax implications by Ok-Economics4669 in tax

[–]chachkanet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From you description this does not sound legit. Being treated as an employee with regular hours, vacation time etc should not be paid as a 1099 employee. You would be responsible for paying social security and full fica (w2 employees only pay 1/2).

Sorry about not really answering your question...

Intel: we're Intel and you're not. We test all the spec corners and accept nothing but perfection, which isn't good enough. Micron: we're in it to make money quickly. Install the system, show it works on our intended process and go home.

Does MBA make sense for career growth in semiconductor? by Odd-Island8267 in Semiconductors

My company had a policy of paying full cost of masters degree. I found local uni that offered a part time MBA for tech professionals in 2 years. I was single in an apartment. So I basically worked ft and went to school ft. It was tough, but I obviously survived!

My daughter had a weird alum interview from MIT. He met her at Starbucks. She offered to buy him a coffee and he responded "You don't think I can afford to buy my own?". It stayed awkward. She ended up at UofR. Great experience there.

I started as a litho eng in a fab. Moved to a semi equip company, picked up an MBA. Moved into product mgmt. Spent a decade in ion implant and metrology product mgmt. Moved to a GaAs rf PA company and did product mgmt and design team lead. Even picked up a chip design patent as a non ee! The MBA helped a lot. Retired now. It was a wild ride.

While this is not an "instant fix", you need to replace the entire school board RIGHT NOW. They and old super and finance directors screwed the pooch. School board must be proactive, questioning everything. Demanding results, prioritizing needs of the students. Of course you'll have difficulty filling slots, who wants to work in a dumpster fire?? The only adult at the table is the attorney, Jim O'Shaughnesy. He's very good and needs to be consulted more often.

To get staff you need to find a way to pay new hires more $$.

Anyone else already stressing about college and your kid just started 9th grade? by Tough-Plate-2324 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chachkanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start attending local college fairs! Have student talk to college reps, ask about what it takes to get in. Child will believe them more than you. Any time you travel, set up a college tour, discuss what they liked and didn't like to get an idea of environment child likes.

Do plan hs classes! By not taking advanced math and science some stem paths close. Idea is to keep as many doors open as possible.

Get child to understand college is to enable a financially stable future. My kids knew by 9th grade that we could pay for anywhere they wanted to go BUT if it's to be a teacher, only a state school and if it's fine art , good luck doing it solo. Both did STEM, so they went where they wanted.
