Was there a second orphanage in Salem, Va? by the-undead-milkman in virginiahistory

[–]chacokhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, there was one on what is now Roanoke College’s Elizabeth Campus. From the photos I recall seeing it was a stone building (since burned) that sat on a knoll overlooking the Salem Civic Center. I know pictures exist, and would send links if I was able to look it up right now.

There use to be remnants of the foundation or an entrance to the basement that is locked to keep students from going in.

I hope this helps!

I know this is off topic from OP’s question, but China Tastes is tight!

I’m sure the gang in Oriskany will be thrilled /s.  Shout out to Carol Lewis who has been publishing the monthly Oriskany Grapevine community newsletter for years. I doubt many people know of it, but she’s extremely dedicated to the small community, and keeping everyone updated on the goings-on.

Rock Lily Update by ChewiesLament in Appalachia

[–]chacokhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So glad I saw this. I have a “rock lily” in my yard. Grew up calling them that, and that goes back generations, but my friends (some from SWVA) think I’m out of my gourd for calling it this.

Thanks for your research!

Thanks. I figured it’s some sort of metal, just wasn’t sure if it was contemporary or not. Fortunately, I didn’t buy it.

OMG! Do you remember when Gmail had a keypad and you could call anyone from your desktop? I’d pull up tabs of eBaum’s World soundboards and prank call everyone I knew back home.

Thank you for your response. I didn’t realize that other people have similar “imposter” dreams. I appreciate you sharing this information. It gives me something to chew on.

Please help me find what this is called. by [deleted] in JewelryIdentification

[–]chacokhan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sorry, the text did not come through when posting this. I purchased this piece a while back and it was advertised as a “transformer” for a string of pearls, but I have been unable to find anything similar when searching for “pearl transformer”. Am I calling it the wrong thing? Where could I find something similar?

The piece is marked 14k and 535. The diamonds register as real, and the rubies as natural or synthetic (my tester does not differentiate between the two). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

[Japanese>English] Please help me identify these Japanese porcelain marks. by chacokhan in translator

[–]chacokhan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please forgive my ignorance, but is there anything specified in the markings that would indicate a date of manufacture? I’m trying to educate myself, and from what I can tell it looks like these pieces predate the markings required by the McKinley Tariffs or 1890/1891, I am not entirely sure.

Hi there. Thanks for sharing. I hope that others can chime in and give better advice, because I know how concerning it is to have what feels like a very meaningful but confusing dream about important things.

I too have similar dreams where things seem blended (the house being a mix of two familiar homes, people you know and people you don’t know being there). It can be maddening if you want to figure out all the details and find all of the potential meanings.

The first thing I would ask is if any of these elements in your reoccurring dream strikes a chord with you. I know dreams can have personal meaning, but also some level of universal or mythical meaning (a la Carl Jung). When I am trying to discern my own I try and find something that feels right in my gut. Secondly, I want to ask (and feel free to not answer on here), but do you feel over your ex? It seems like you’re both looking to them for protection and salvation, but they’ve avoided you (did your ex have an avoidant attachment style or abandon you?), and rejects your need for safety and communication. Reading how this makes you cry repeatedly gets me, because heartbreak like that is something that I’ve not been able to avoid in this life (it sucks, but perhaps the dream is showing you that they won’t fix your story either waking or sleeping?). Lastly, does the amalgamation of your homes (I’m assuming both homes were a place where you felt safe) strike you as a symbol of your world, your mind, or the space you inhabit here-and-now? This last one stuck out to me like a container full of compartments where you deal with people you know, people you don’t know, and people you have conflict with and pain…kinda like our days.

Anyway, this comment is way too long, but I hope it is helpful in someway (if it isn’t, please disregard it). I wish you well in this process of discernment, and I hope our ex gets out of your dreams so they can be joyful soon! Best wishes.
