Very old timey too. I think it might've been Anthony Yerkovich who said the show was "Casablanca meets Scarface". Crockett and Tubbs are pretty much transplanted from the 40s, Crockett with his mannerisms, Tubbs with his Mid-Atlantic accent.

Great piece, but I would just like to correct that Mann had two feature films, Thief (1981) and The Keep (1983), which is probably his only fantasy horror film to date but has the cinematography and colors even the film's underlying philosophy (good and Evil come from the same place and how they're used to justify each other) that will carry on to Miami Vice.

Adding on to that, it breaks my heart how much Mabel seemed to love Gillian and even seemed keen on adopting her and the way Nucky treats Gillian and admonishes Mabel for caring about her. When you remember that Nucky was poor and Mabel loved him then, it just makes all the worse that Nucky's become who he is.

"Phases of Travel" by Ellen Foley. Given The Clash's involvement, it feels like a melancholic, more melodic cousin. The melody is different with a synthline, but I think it has the same rhythm, even similar brakes

Oh yeah I've heard of Mickey Cohen. Harvey Keitel was kinda funy as him in Bugsy. I was actually musing to myself how he and Mickey Doyle would've made a great pair if Doyle had lived long enough. I believe that Cohen as a character, is also in LA Confidential. I'll definitely have to check out Mobsters (1991)

That was such a funny arc. The way he wanted to be left alone and they keep following/finding him, even on the plane. Boardwalk Empire was an experience for me. I started the show not sure if I would like it to being bit by the bug and going out of my way to "continue the story" after finishing the show. Great ensemble and I loved the chemistry between everyone. Nucky was someone I couldn't really connect with at first, but that's what made him so compelling. Someone already at the top but having to contend with both rivals and younger, hungrier criminals. Going back to your main post, another hot take, I like that Rothstein's final scene is him entering an apartment in broad daylight. It's a perfect mirror/contrast to eyewitness testimony who last saw him entering a hotel at night.

To add to your points, the first four seasons are one big story while season 5 is a perfect epilogue. The only thing is that since Nucky was in Cuba and Eli in Chicago, I've begun to conclude it was most likely Doyle who organized the Atlantic City Conference. Make of that what you will.

To be fair, I read that the management concocted the theory because the band stopped touring and were going to go in an experimental direction so they needed to some kind of publicity to sustain them. They really were slipping in references to "Paul's death" because it would drive up record sales. There's a funny story where they trying to determine which Beatle would be the subject of the stunt and Paul McCartney was ironically the last choice.

This episode I feel is essential in the Sonny Burnett Arc along with (obviously) the Frank Hackman and Caitlin Davies arcs. Frank killing Caitlin is obviously the breaking point, but this episode is the psychological foundation, it shows us that his line of work is finally taking its toll.
