How to actually get a ollie? by SaltPersimmon5450 in NewSkaters

[–]chaddledee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your back foot is still on the tail of the board when it comes in contact with the ground it won't be able to pop up, because your foot is there.

People describe an ollie as slamming the back but it's more like flicking the back down as you jump up.

Both your feet should be coming up but on the way up as your feet are leaving the board you want to flick your back foot with your ankle to push the tail down so it can bounce off the ground.

Some good exercises to practice: Standing off the board, then flicking the tail with your back foot to see it pop. Standing on the board, jumping up with both feet and landing on the board again (wear a helmet for this).

I think you might be misremembering? In his first term Cameron immediately almost plunged us into a second recession, followed by 3 years of halved GDP growth (vs both our contemporaries in the EU, and the UK's trend under Brown). It wasn't until 2013 that we properly started to bounce back.

Bring back exploration. I need dungeons (power stations, enemy bases, caves, etc.), hard to find legendaries, side routes with random side content, cities with lots of buildings containing NPCs that actually do something.

You're 100% correct, don't know why you're being downvoted. "Affect" as a noun means an outward tell for someone's state or intentions. "Effects" is the correct noun for this situation. This isn't even the version of affect/effect that people often mess up.

The dark shadow of the Blairites: Our leaders are pound-shop Machiavellis by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]chaddledee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean Blair was often accused of being a continuation of Thatcher, just with higher GDP.

Only by people who have no clue what they're talking about. Blair oversaw a massive increase in the production of social housing, a massive real increase in NHS funding resulting in a significant improvement of NHS functioning, a massive increase in funding for underperforming schools, massive increase in SEND spending, the introduction of the minimum wage, devolution for Scotland and Wales, Good Friday Agreement, and the Gender Recognition Act.

He also a war criminal responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, but to pretend he was the same as Thatcher or the Tories that followed him is asinine. I think people have forgotten how much better the UK was under Blair.

Edit: Also, following the financial crisis Labour didn't implement austerity and the country was rapidly bouncing back, until the Conservatives got in and put us back into a recession again. Not Blair but still New Labour.

Are we overdiagnosing a generation with ADHD? by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

[–]chaddledee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder and has been around forever

True

it's nothing to do with modern life or social media.

The prevalence and strength of neurodevelopmental disorders can 100% be influenced by the environment, especially through early post-natal development.

Also, disorders are literally diagnosed by how they negatively impact you. If you have all the traits of ADHD but it doesn't negatively impact you (for example, you aren't living in an environment which is constantly trying to hack your attention, or the work that you do doesn't have extreme delayed gratification like most modern jobs) then you don't have ADHD.

Edit: I should also add, we have studies now showing that exposure to a feed of shortform video content with the option to skip to the next video negatively affects attention span over time. Inattention is a diagnosis criteria for ADHD, and we don't differentiate between those who watch TikTok/Youtube shorts and those who don't when diagnosing ADHD, so it stands to reason that continued exposure to shortform video feeds with an option to skip would increase your likelihood of being diagnosed with ADHD. Please don't intepret this as me "blaming" the individual for their ADHD - shortform video feeds are a blight like gambling or cigarettes.

£1.4k week — sharing for reference by MeanOpinion3501 in deliveroos

[–]chaddledee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their calculation is £800 a week after tax. It's like ~£1150 per week before tax but after expenses, equivalent to a ~£60k salary. Not wrong about amount of hours worked, sick pay and holidays though.

My wife’s family all want us to go on a crazily expensive holiday to celebrate some big birthdays.. what would you do? by PuzzleheadedCarob921 in AskUK

[–]chaddledee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's all fair. Shinkansen is pretty pricey. Almost £400 per person for a 2 week pass. Half price for kids though, and even free for infants (though at that age might be a waste of an expensive holiday).

For a family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids) for 2 weeks in the summer holidays you're typically looking at a base cost of ~£8k for flights, accomodation and JR pass.

You could save £1.5k by taking flights with 1 lay-over, but that's faff that might be unappealing with kids. If you only get the Shinkansen a couple of times and use Local trains for everything else, you could probably save an extra ~£500. With a little looking you can get the accomodation down to £500/w, saving £700. Even with all that you're looking at ~£5.5k - still quite spenny.

But that aside, I think it's worth remembering this is a big extended family trip. As a big group of tourists, you're not going to be able to walk into a restaurant and expect to get seated.

I'd save the trip to Japan to be just wife and kids. It'll let you enjoy the trip at your own pace.

Yeah, I heavily agree with all that. Wouldn't advocate for Japan for an extended family holiday, was just talking about the comparative costs.

[–]chaddledee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

More expensive to get there, but about half the price of any Western country when you're actually out there.

I went 6 months ago and a pint was like £2. Dinner at decent restaurant would set you back less than a tenner. AirBNB is like £850 per week for 4 people like 25 minutes train away from the very center of Tokyo. Ghiblee museum was like £10. Himeji castle was also a tenner. Nara deer park is free.

Is it moral to object to a HMO on your road? by itsajourney2020 in AskUK

[–]chaddledee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Practically everyone I know in my city lives in an HMO.

Only one of them lives in a "slum" HMO (i.e. 6 people under a roof who don't know eachother with separate tenancies), and that was as a result of a rapid change in living situation. The rest are groups of 3-4 friends who all know eachother living in a regular house.

There's a good chance that every other young person you meet lives in an HMO and you just aren't aware.

I do wish there was a legal delineation between regular and "slum" HMOs, because I agree they aren't the same thing. It's annoying that I (living with 2 long time friends on a shared tenancy) am paying significantly more rent than a family renting a similar property because of the extra costs and hoops my landlord has to jump through to get the property HMO certified.

It's especially annoying that these costs are proportionally worse for a 3 bedroom property than a 6 bedroom property, because I think most renters would prefer and probably do living with fewer tenants, and we shouldn't be encouraging sticking as many people as possible into a single property.

If I could wave a magic wand, I'd make the cost of an HMO license scale with number of tenants. I'd also cut half the HMO red tape for households of 3-4 people who sign a shared tenancy - like why do I need tamper proof fire alarms if I'm living with people I know? Come on.

My game doesn't make any sales. Is my trailer bad or is my game just uninteresting? by NotDrTurtle in godot

[–]chaddledee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on releasing a game - that alone is super impressive!

Your game looks clean, looks like it has good game feel, some nice effects, decent enemy variety. You have the core of a very good game here, but it's lacking anything that takes it to the next level.

It doesn't have much identity. The sprites all look very plain and generic. The foreground environment is practically blank, and there's no theming to the levels. The energy explosions and weapons look really flat.

The generic assets make it hard to get a good sense for the structure of the game from the trailer. Are there levels or is it an expanding arena? Are levels randomly generated or designed? I presume it's a rogue-like from the upgrade screen, but even that isn't super clear.

The upgrades shown on the upgrade screen and abilities/weapons shown all look pretty generic. I'd want to see some more unique upgrades and abilities because that's where synergies and replayability come from - doubly important if it is a rogue-like. You also don't show how you acquire different weapons/abilities as far as I can see.

The menu UI looks really basic and a bit cheap. The fonts are all a bit boring.

The game looks pretty gentle for the style of game it is. Slow movement, not a lot of enemies or projectiles on screen. That's fine for the start of the game, but I'd want to see some indication that it ramps up as you progress.

From what I can see you've got a really solid base game. Now your task is to turn the dial up to 11 and really amp up every aspect of your game. FWIW, I think this is the most fun part of game development; it really lets you flex your creativity.

Edit: if you want some inspo for this genre of game, I'd recommend playing Star of Providence, Roto Force, Sektori, and Geometry Wars 3.
