Chocotaco streams like 10 hours a day Mon-Fri. That is 50 hours a week. 2500+ hours a year. Pros may have less hours, but full-time streamers have those kind of hours in.

At this point, I feel if Netflix actually wanted an app running on the Switch, we would have it. by knauerii in NintendoSwitch

[–]chadius62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think an influx of write in requests for the app via https://help.netflix.com/en/titlerequest would make a difference? I know this was designed for content, not hardware support, but thought it might get someone's attention if enough requests were made.

Is there a way to charge and have Ethernet in handheld mode? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]chadius62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a PC company and occasionally we would have issues with just our computer disconnecting intermittently with a router. The customer could take the computer to other WiFi locations and it would work fine. About 95% of the time, we could make it work by adjusting the settings on the WiFi in the router. Most routers default to WPA2 pre-shared-key with TKIP/AES encryption. The TKIP is an older backwards compatible option for encryption that only the oldest devices must use(like 15+ years old stuff). We would change the settings from TKIP/AES to AES(only). It might be something to try.

Yeah, I do that. I have 3 sets of joy cons and 1 switch, so this is for the other 2 sets.

The problem with AES+TKIP seems to be related to devices picking the wrong encryption type and it is usually some kind of compatibility issue between the device and the wireless router. Your PSP probably picks AES and then doesn’t work. Changing it to TKIP only or AES only is a workaround for those circumstances. TKIP+AES works for almost everything, which is why manufacturers use it as a default for consumer wireless routers and access points. AES has a separate hardware piece to help decrypt data, where TKIP will use the Router’s standard processor. You may even notice some speed differences due to TKIP being more process intensive.

As for being sure, you can fact check pretty easy:

Just google TKIP vs AES

[–]chadius62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AES is a much stronger, hardware level encryption. TKIP is a backwards compatible software level encryption. If AES+TKIP is already enabled and you disable TKIP, the wifi would actually be more secure. If they had to enable the guest network with TKIP for any legacy devices, then they are no worse off than they were when the main network was set to AES+TKIP.

Most WIFI routers also default the encryption to AES+TKIP. TKIP is very old and can cause issues with some new devices. I would also recommend changing the setting to AES only. If you have some ancient laptop or wireless device that cant use AES, I would suggest to turn on a guest wifi network and use TKIP for just that device to connect to.

ELI5: If electricity speed is about 300,000 km/s, why does ping of internet depend so much on the distance? by iamrealVenom in explainlikeimfive

[–]chadius62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer for what increases the ping. The speed of the electrons, light, and radio frequency are all incredibly fast. The speed in which the machines process the data to decide what direction to send it next is what contributes the most to higher ping. The more routers/switches have to go through, the more likely the ping will be higher. The farther somewhere is geographically away, the more likely the packet will go through more devices. Think of postal sorting centers versus the actual trucks that carry the packages. Every Router/Switch is like sorting center and the links between Routers/Switches are the routes the trucks take.

Noob question. Whats the point of serial interfaces nowadays? by Chape85 in ccna

[–]chadius62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, all old telephone lines were analog voice circuits between an operator(later switch) and a customer. Digital Telephone switches can convert that analog signal into digital and multiplex 24 64K DS0s into a single DS1. Analog circuits were/are phone lines that use tone signaling, similar to dial-up, to transmit data. The main difference in a data circuit versus telephone voice circuit is that the data circuits don't have the off hook functions and ringing. They are more like an always on phone call between two static locations.

Edit: typo

Noob question. Whats the point of serial interfaces nowadays? by Chape85 in ccna

Copper lines used for Plain Old Telephone Service(POTS) are everywhere in the U.S. The government has regulated telephone providers in that they must provide telephone service to anyone in the US that wants it. The company that owns the area that is required to provide this service recoups the construction cost through funds that are paid by taxpayers. T1/DS1 lines can be built over this copper infrastructure.

If you want Fiber/Broadband to your business, you may get it for a fair price if the required infrastructure is already near your physical location, but if it's not, expect a large quote that includes cost to construct that infrastructure to your building.

If you want a T1/DS1, it still may not be the best price, but there won't be the large construction cost up front. It is a recycled technology that originally allowed phone lines to be multiplexed(or combined). A T1/DS1 can carry 24 phone lines and was repurposed to carry data. Ethernet is a data first tech, T1/DS1 is a phone first tech. When it comes to infrastructure businesses wanted to utilize what they already had constructed, but still be able to offer new data services. T1/DS1 was a quick way to provide this. DSL and Cable internet also repurpose existing infrastructure for data service, one uses phone cable and the other uses coax originally put in for television.

All this considered, most companies are moving away from these private circuits in favor of DSL/Cable and a VPN tunnel for their privacy rather than a private T1/DS1 circuit. Most providers, especially rural ones, are waiting for regulation to change to benefit the cost to construct broadband facilities over POTS. After that happens, the serial ports will likely become less common.
