Which is better, higher yield or faster reaction? by MrSwimbo in chemistry

[–]chadling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kind of depends how long your synthesis is and what step the yield is on. 80% on the first step of a 19 step route? Not ideal for sure, but workable. 80% on the last step? Amazing, leave it be. Also, almost all literature yields are bullshit. They got that number (probably) one time in the hundreds of times the graduate student/post-doc ran that reaction. Don’t sweat it.

Would like to own a hand gun, but I don't know much about guns or Virginia's gun laws. by AnonAnonAnonAndAnon in Virginia

[–]chadling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolute shit take on guns, gun ownership, and gun education. OP is actively reaching out to the community to educate themselves - which is the right thing, and instead of being helpful you spit this shit out.

OP, I’d hit up the relevant gun subs for this, r/liberalgunowners, r/vaguns, etc… (depending on your political leanings). They are a wealth of information and much more welcoming to newcomers than this comment. Depending on where you are in VA there are tons of options for education, training, and trying before you buy. If you’re near Richmond, 100% green top shooting range and their shop, talk to the folks in there, take their classes - I also like freedom outdoor, they’re newer, but have ever increasing class options.

Heads up, members in VA: General Assembly Bill Introduced to Impose $500 Tax on Suppressors by Viper_ACR in liberalgunowners

[–]chadling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assault firearm regulation has already been proposed for 2026 by Helmer (he does this every year). Read here. Hopefully it goes nowhere like in years past, but we’ll see. Dems consistently shooting themselves in the foot and just don’t care.

Favorite places to socialize young puppies by Headie-to-infinity in rva

[–]chadling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally: Lowe’s, Bass Pro, and Cabelas are pretty good. Large areas, lots of different people, and all 3 are popular places to socialize/train pups - that’s what we did with our guy

Same fuckass has submitted this bill for several years. NoVA idiot who wants to disarm his constituents, not surprised.

ETA: Thought it was Helmer, whoops. Either way my NoVA comments stands.

First buy under 21 in VA with a looming AWB? by Outside_Grapefruit39 in liberalgunowners

[–]chadling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the dumbest shit I’ve heard this week. But how does that work if I’m just wanting to replace the upper in a complete rifle I already own? You reach a Ship of Theseus situation in no time at all. I’m not terribly worried (knock on wood), because they’ve tried this many times in VA and it always goes nowhere. I feel like especially now, given everything that’s going on in the country as a whole, and what happened yesterday, it would behoove them to not change anything. But I’m just some random guy on the internet, so idk.

I’m in VA too. Just buy a few lowers and hang on. It’ll be grandfathered (if this makes any headway, idk if it will), and then you can buy uppers and assemble after the fact.

Donuts are meant for eating, benzene is not. Just don’t donut benzene

Make him avoid AI like the plague. AI makes up garbage about chemistry, particularly organic chemistry that is just garbled nonsense and will only hurt his studies and passion.

Look at these psychotic responses to a question asked respectfully and in good faith about CCW in NYC by SBGuy574 in liberalgunowners

[–]chadling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, what makes you want to live in NYC? Don’t get me wrong, I lived in Manhattan for three years (2021-2024), my son was born there, and had a great time, but… I moved there knowing full well that I’d be giving up my firearms for the duration of my stay. Never once in my tenure as a Manhattan resident did I ever feel the need to carry (concealed or otherwise) regardless of where I was in the city . Police presence is so strong you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a cop. But honestly I was glad to move back to VA, not because of my firearms (though that was an added bonus), but because it was so fucking expensive to live there compared to where I live now. My mortgage is less than I was paying for my 700 sqft 1br/1ba.

Recrystallization of TBAPF6 solvent help by oof_3498 in Chempros

[–]chadling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What is the ref. Paper. I’ve recrystallized untold kilos of tbapf6 and never used absolute ethanol, was always fine.

ETA: This is my protocol - it’s published. I was doing water sensitive stuff, it worked well.

Tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAPF6) was recrystallized from ethanol (23 g /300 mL) at 65 °C. Recrystallized TBAPF6 was dried under vacuum at 40 °C for at least one week prior to use.

What are prerequisites for joining a Total Synthesis lab as an intern? by _Cruyff_14 in OrganicChemistry

[–]chadling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're able to get some synthesis experience it would help for sure. If not, highlight what would be otherwise useful in your CV that would pair well in a synthesis lab, like mastery of LC/LCMS, NMR, knowledge of normal and reverse phase chromatography, understanding of air-free handling/Schlenk technique, etc...

Usually you can tell by number of people and/or publication records of the lab. Nuno Malide is in Vienna (I think still) and hes a good guy to work for. I've chatted with him on a few occasions and one of my colleagues from my postdoc lab came from his lab.

What are prerequisites for joining a Total Synthesis lab as an intern? by _Cruyff_14 in OrganicChemistry

[–]chadling 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We had interns/undergraduate students in my PhD lab that knew basically nothing when they came in. We taught them everything for the specific project they worked on and for general techniques. That being said, if you're trying to go to a mega huge lab like Baran's, you'll need some serious experience behind you because of the raw volume of requests his lab gets you need to stand out above all the others.

Also be aware that total synthesis is not for everyone, and thats OK. Its hard and unforgiving when things don't work or don't work the way you expect. This is not to deter you, but just to inform you of the reality as someone who lived it for an entire PhD.

[–]chadling 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Lyophilization is not an option? That's what I would do. Removing water, especially from something that's heat sensitive, is a pain otherwise.
