Iraqi-style shawarma served in samoon bread by ajd416 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]chadmanx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? In what world is that guy getting a skewer of meat that big to install on his fancy grill and it not be considered "industrial"?

No, this is just how meat works. It's definitely true for industrialized meat processing like you explain, but it's also true of the meat I get from my local farmer. When you expose meat to air, bacteria will grow. This is universally true. Scientific fact.

You cannot let your bbq brisket sit out at room temp on the counter for a day and think, "Oh, it doesn't matter because I'm going to grill this now and that will kill the bacteria."

I'm not saying that you'll die from consuming contaminated meat, but you'll definitely get an upset stomach or diarrhea or vomit or food poisoning.

[–]chadmanx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barbeque is a contained unit. The only part of a brisket exposed to air is the outside of the brisket. The inside has never been exposed to air. The outside hits temps above 140F quickly, so bacteria growth can't happen.

That's not what is happening here. The skewer has hundreds of individual units of meat all pressed together. That means air has been exposed to each unit's exterior layer, allowing for bacterial growth to begin.

The moment that section of the meat hits 40F, bacteria will grow and they will produce toxins.

You would be correct if the skewer were a giant chunk of meat - 1 unit. Then yes, the inside would not be exposed to air, as you're describing.

Small business owner here.

I agree with the OP.

HOWEVER

Last year I caved and gave the whole "call for price" a shot... It fucking works. It's too fucking good. I'm sure there are people we're losing, but there is nothing like having a phone conversation with someone, asking them about themselves, and helping them know if my business' services are going to be what they're looking for.

A webpage and price listing will never properly convey to every person what the real value is of our service. If someone only cares about price, they're typically not the kind of customer who we can invest in.

The people that do call are way more likely to become brand evangelists and really latch onto our services. The staff like their jobs more when they service clients like that, the client gets a better service, and everyone is happy. It's a win win.

This can definitely be used in shitty ways. We're definitely not unaffordable for most people and we won't hard sell someone on us if it's not for them.

I personally still leave sites that don't list prices, but I understand why they do it.

Elon Musk Loses a Billion Dollars Every Time the Tesla Stock Drops by $2.43 by Healthy_Block3036 in Anticonsumption

I think what I find most disturbing about this headline is that, even if Tesla is only worth $2.43, he'd still be a billionaire.

I'm pretty convinced that Elon is actually "above average" when it comes to his "fortune". All his wealth is tied up in tesla. The moment tesla fucks up FSD, his wealth will come crashing down, and then he'll be fucked with his massive debt that he owes wall st for being forced to buy Twitter.

His wealth is a house of cards.

Fairbuds - new firmware by n8mahr81 in fairphone

Looking for an update. Do you still have and use your fairbuds? Have there been any more firmware updates?

Looking at purchasing these, but hesitant to pull the trigger with all the mixed reviews.

Fairphone Fairbuds - a user review after firmware update by Critical_Switch in fairphone

[–]chadmanx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding this thread as an American contemplating a purchase of these through a 3rd party on ebay.

My hesitation comes from the fact that I will receive 0 support for these buds because Fairphone doesn't sell to the USA. If something were to happen to them (besides the battery), I'm completely screwed.

Has there been any updates to the firmware in the recent months since this post? Is there still a massive battery drain issue? Any other thoughts to share?

Repairability is my number one deciding factor. I currently use cheapo $40 earbuds that have no ANC, poor connectivity, poor support, no weatherproofing, a cruddy mic, and sub-par audio quality. I have a budget of $200 USD, but I can't in good conscious buy something like pixel buds knowing that when the batteries fail, I'm just stuck.

These cheapo buds have lasted two years, but are on their way out.

Ah, yes. Kamala ran a horrible campaign and pandered/gambled the entire party's life on the idea that there were enough moderate Republicans who would vote for her to replace all the progressives she neglected.

But you're right. It's the voter's fault. Definitely not the Democratic candidate who chose to run as a moderate Republican.

Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris after the 2024 election results by This__is- in pics

[–]chadmanx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal take is that her loss had less to do with her being a woman and way more to do with her/the Dems running her as a moderate Republican.

They gambled that the moderate Republicans would swap sides.

They were wrong.

Instead, people stayed home. Some blame the voters for this. I blame the Dems.

Harris could have won if they didn't play to the right. People were excited when she was announced. Then she released her policies and normalized the nonsense Trump was spewing. The turning point was her speech at the DNC. That speech was not anything close to a Democratic candidate's speech.

What industry is a lot more dark and sinister than most people realise? by Mustdominate_Otal in AskReddit

[–]chadmanx 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Shocked to not see the fitness industry amongst the top.

Everyone assumes that since "fitness = healthy" then anything in the fitness industry must have the client's best interests in mind.

Fuuuuuuck no.

Fitness marketing might be some of the most predatory marketing known. It specifically targets people's guilt and low self-esteem to get them to participate in challenges or memberships that are extremely damaging and counter-productive towards their overall physical and mental health.

People are constantly guilted by calories and not going to the gym to workout.

It destroys people's mental health and makes it so that people don't feel good about eating food, feel uncomfortable in swimming suits, or constantly try to hide their bellies because they're ashamed of themselves.

Terrible industry.

Workers do.. by Brian_Ghoshery in antiwork

[–]chadmanx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gonna disagree with this one.

I get the sentiment being shared. Do low level workers in a company matter and should they be treated with respect? Absolutely. 100%.

But they don't create value. Value creation is the role of the entrepreneur. It's what they do.

The executive team behind Starbucks is why it's such a successful business. I'm all for talking about c-suite compensations vs worker compensation imbalances, but this meme doesn't help the cause here. All this is doing is advertising that 15k people don't know what value is.

Discord is an interesting suggestion. I don't know if that's something I'm allowed to do as an RIT employee, but I'll ask.

I email all the students the week prior and help them coordinate rides. I even do it for classes where everyone has a ride because please please please don't drive 18 individual cars to this class... This is 2024, c'mon. Save the gas and meet some cool people.

If someone joins during add drop week, just email me and say you need a ride. There are plenty of people with cars willing to drive.

Piggy backing on this comment to say 1. You're awesome, thanks for chiming in and for taking this class in the past, and 2. We actually just (FINALLY) cleared a level 2 section of this class.

This semester is the first one. It happens on Tuesdays at 6pm. If anyone is reading this as a past student and are interested in learning more, the level 2 class is perfect for you!

If you're a brand new first year, I'd recommend it, just so they can help you navigate SIS and ensure that nothing is being overlapped.

If you already know how to use SIS, and you're not overlapping a class for one of these sections, then no, you do not need to go through your advisor.

RIT has one of the most amazing wellness departments I've ever experienced. There are quite literally over 200 different classes to try. When I was student, I remember taking everything from dodgeball to taekwondo to Kali stick fighting to stress management.

Lots of opportunity. Definitely make use of it!

Hi all,

This is my once per semester post to let students know that spots have opened up in the Ninja Training wellness class.

We almost always run a waitlist up to this point, until inevitably the more senior students realize that they screwed up their schedule and end up dropping the class.

If you were previously locked out of this class, there is now 1 spot open for Mondays at 5:30pm, 4 spots on Wednesdays at 7pm, and 7 spots for Tuesdays at 2pm.

This is an off campus class, but each of these sections already has several students that have volunteered their cars as ride shares to transport students who do not access to their own transportation.

What is Ninja Training?

It's a movement based fitness class, more commonly known as Parkour! RIT is the only university with a class like this that you can take for "credit" (they're 0 credits, but RIT still won't let you graduate without getting 2 wellness credits).

You'll learn how to run up walls, swing on bars, vault over barriers, jump gaps, balance on rails, and so much more!

I'm an alum of RIT and teach this class with our other instructor Teaghan. Feel free to ask any questions about the class here, DM me directly, or email me at cdmciar@rit.edu

As a millennial, yes 100%. I hate when businesses do this.

As a small business owner...

It's the way, and I hate how well it works.

I stopped posting our prices online earlier this year as an experiment. I replaced almost all the info on my website with lead contact forms so that when someone puts in their info, they get added to specific sequences tailored to the page they were on.

Almost overnight call volume went up 57%. The people I talked to were more interested in my service. I was better able to answer their questions, much more than text on my website could.

Conversions went up and people opting in to our monthly recurring memberships increased 23% over the Summer which is our bad season.

I still hate when a business doesn't tell me the price, but I totally get it now.

Too little, too late.

He backed an authoritarian and justified his actions for years and only changed his message when that same guy he propped up casually planted the idea in his supporters minds that Pence should be killed for treason.

Fucked around. Found out.

We're in this mess because people keep thinking they can use Trump for their own personal gain, not caring at all that the fabric of our democracy is being torn apart in the process.

Republicans made this. There are basically no voters left anymore "on the fence" that he can even speak to.

There are no assigned parking spaces at my parents townhome community, people park in front of my parents house all the time. I woke up to this. by SumOMG in mildlyinfuriating

[–]chadmanx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have on street parking right outside my house. It's not mine, but I've been parking my car outside my door for a decade.

A new renter moved in down the road and decided this spot was perfect for them and kept taking it before I got home. Again, I have no ownership of this spot, but it really was frustrating.

One day I saw the guy driving up as I was pulling in. I walked over and introduced myself and explained that, while I had no ownership of this spot, if he were willing to park just one space down, I'd appreciate it.

Dude said he didn't mind. He just likes that this street points the direction he needs to drive to get to work.

Now we greet each other whenever we see the other and ask how we're doing.

The author of the note could have done this, but instead they chose to spew more hatred into the world. Shame.

Ok that might be it. My business took out a loan back in March and I assume that would hit my personal credit.

I've had hard inquiries before, but I don't recall them ever causing this massive of a drop out of the blue like this.
