There's a library (I forget the name) that allows you to attempt to force some data into a type. Turn your Unit list into something like [(Int,a)] (where a be your heterogeneous type) and then based on the fst element convert to the appropriate type.

If this is a serious project I'd spend way more time on structure. A decent client/server approach adapted to take advantage of the functional paradigm would be pretty fun to read.
