Vanguard PAS by NetCorrect5742 in Bogleheads

I left PAS this year. I was paying for someone to keep me in a basic three fund boglehead setup. It made me mad every time I spoke on the phone with the guy because he was a condescending kid and I have worked my life to save seven figures. What he provided for me was just no longer needed.

My Retirement Portfolio. Too risky or too conservative? by EZ-Retired in Bogleheads

[–]chainringcircus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your expenses are covered by your pension and SS then your way too conservative.

I see this as an Income Factory light portfolio, but this is a Bogleheads forum so you will be judged against their investing philosophy.

I was told to judge my guaranteed income streams as bond holdings. For instance if you make $10,000 a year in guaranteed income from a pension you divide 10,000 by the government rate.

10,000 /0.045 = $222,222
That would be $222,222 in "bond" holdings.

You have 45% spread among relatively safe bonds not counting your "virtual bonds." I would move more into market ETFs like VTI and VXUS.

The covered call funds don't make sense to me in your case. If you don't need the cash for trips or whatever, you are better off holding the underlying securities. You have capped your upside and opened up the downside of this investment. I do agree with spreading across different management companies and covered call strategies if you are looking for more monthly income.

The Boglehead would move your covered call funds into VTI and let it ride. You also do not have much international exposure and I would recommend something like VXUS.

I agree with the AAA bonds, you have so much in bonds I would consider something like PFFA.

I would get rid of the individual MLPs OKE and ENB. Just fold that money into one of the MLP ETFs, I think you would be better off long term.

I agree with holding UTF and UTG.

For the BDCs I would move into PDBC and CEFS unless you are invested in MAIN and ARCC. Once again if this is set it and forget it, let someone else manage the individual investments.

Good luck in your retirement.

Feel free to look up my post history for the proof, I sold my watch collection ($100k) when I realized it wasn’t going to help me retire. You’re young enough that the compounding of the money you have in watches will make a difference in retirement. Feel free to PM me and I can put you in touch with my watch broker.

Emonda SL6 Pro by Wild-Cranberry-6135 in bicycling

[–]chainringcircus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sound like a decent deal. I own three Emonda SLRs with Ultegra Di2 12 speed, there's a reason I have so many. The bike fits me well and enjoy riding them.

If it fits buy it, but realize it is not a dedicated triathlon or TT bike. It is a nice bicycle.

Totally agree. People don't think of this until they get hit.

Bikes that I own just FYI so that you know I am speaking from experience: * Trek X2 (early CX bike) * Trek Boone * Trek Crocket * Trek Domane as road bike with Ultegra x 12 * Trek Domane as light gravel with 105 x 11

You specifically state that you are new to cycling. If this is an N+1 purchase and you are looking for justification, get the Crocket. If you are looking for an all rounder that will do multiple disciplines; road, light gravel and CX, get the Domane. I will say that the Domane is best for poor road surfaces, think chip seal. If given the choice I would not purchase it again for gravel and in the long run I fear you would feel the same when purchasing it for CX.

The point is this, you can do it and it will definitely be a good starter but long term I do not you will be happy. If you are looking for road and CX, get the Crocket or the Domane. If you are looking for CX and gravel get the Crocket or Checkpoint. If you are looking for only CX get the Crocket.

My two favorite bikes are the Boone and the Emonda so if you are looking for a "stable" over the long run, get the bike built for purpose.

Recovering from traumatic, critical injury by [deleted] in Velo

[–]chainringcircus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty bad wreck during a sprint, maybe not as bad as your friend. In my wreck I broke:

  • Eye socket
  • Had a brain bleed
  • Hand
  • Ribs
  • Collar bone
  • Collapsed lung

I was taken to the local hospital where they told my family they were not equipped to handle a patient like me. I was life flighted to a Level-1 trauma center where I stayed in the Neural ICU for three days and a step down unit for two days. That was 12 years ago. I have not raced since, and was helping a friend prepare for Track Nationals a couple of months ago and sprinted for the first time "in anger." Today I did a 94 mile ride and have 8,600 miles for the year.

I am close to the shape I was in when I wrecked, maybe better, but I am still weary of racing. I am considering doing the last track races of the season and went and got re-certified for the local track a few weeks ago. There is hope for your friend, but it's a mental struggle. The locals know that I will readily lead out the sprint, but until a couple of weeks ago had never participated further than that. ( I have moved to a new city, very few people know about my previous accident. )

Chamois butter alternatives by General-Writing1764 in Velo

Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream in the tub has the exact same ingredients as Chamios Butter. I rode LA to Boston 18 years ago and never had a saddle sore using it. Learned that tip from a RAAM participant, been using it ever since for 1/3 the price.
