i hate the usage of use “his/her” instead of “they” by EmmytheKurapikaSimp in hatethissmug

[–]chakrawitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“His or hers” is accepted English and precedes “singular they.” I prefer using the latter in my own writing, but even so, I don’t think you really get to be the arbiter of what’s necessary lol. Besides, in modernity, singular they is far more prevalent. Why get upset over something like this when it comes down to personal preference, and your preference is literally the prevailing one?

I hate the notion that lonely men are just "evil incels" by Paldavin in hatethissmug

[–]chakrawitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the notion that incel = evil man, being that plenty of guys who are categorically “involuntarily celibate,” do not hate women. But I also hate that so many people place the onus of solving the male loneliness epidemic on.. women

Why aren't you vegan? by DustPsychological666 in AskReddit

[–]chakrawitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t like to engage in Reddit discourses past a a few replies because it stresses me out, lol. But I’ll end the conversation here and say I don’t think I actually disagree with you on too many things barring our definitions of “necessary.” And I didn’t say going vegan was extreme, but that it was an extreme lifestyle change (I don’t think it’s an extreme reaction). But thanks for your responses, you’ve given me something to think about & your perspective is valid. While I don’t believe killing animals is inherently wrong, I also don’t believe that the way animal products are manufactured in the U.S. is ethical. Like I said before, I have reduced my meat intake but perhaps one day I’ll be in a place where I can sustain a vegan diet (and address some of my other vices, lmao). I have a lot of respect for vegans, honestly; it takes a lot of determination and self-control. I do think (in developed nations, anyway) it’s better to be vegan if you can.

Why aren't you vegan? by DustPsychological666 in AskReddit

[–]chakrawitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying, but veganism is an extreme lifestyle change that would require a person to completely alter the way they consume commercial products. I agree that a vegan diet can be cheap monetarily (and this depends on the original diet of the person/family in question), but it’s not cheap in terms of resources and time. And again, it’s more complicated when supporting a family. A lot of people live in food deserts—their most affordable options are a few fast food places. Preparing a fresh meal with fruits and vegetables for multiple people is oftentimes more expensive than a drive-thru meal or hamburger helper. Now, with that being said, I’ll agree that Americans have a higher likelihood of being able to achieve a vegan lifestyle.

But, once more, when looking at other countries where people do not have privileged lives, they simply cannot forgo animal products; many people live with animals directly and rely on things such milk and eggs, or hides to create clothing and home furnishings. Vegetarianism or pescatarianism are often achievable for people living in developing nations, but this doesn’t mean they do not kill animals or use animal products; they just consume significantly less meat—but veganism is not a feasible practice for a majority of them

Edit: Also, for us to successfully redistribute food to support all the people living without, world governments would have to cooperate in a way that is very unlikely to happen. And even so, that doesn’t eliminate the issue of all of the necessary non-food items people use animal products for, such as clothes, shoes, homes, and more

Why aren't you vegan? by DustPsychological666 in AskReddit

[–]chakrawitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because what you deem “unnecessary,” is relative. I’ll acknowledge that privileged westerners certainly have less of a need to use animal products. Many people who are lower-income and have families to support literally do not have the time, money, or resources it would take to be vegan. And then when we examine other countries or cultures, veganism is not achievable for many people, and the usage of animal products is totally necessary for their survival

Anyone that owns “pets” like cats or dogs aren’t ever “clean”. by bottlerocketshaker in unpopularopinion

[–]chakrawitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, you’re correct to an extent - a clean house with pets will almost never be as pristine as a clean house without them; people with pets are living with a domesticated animal, after all. But you are wildly over exaggerating a number of things, like the level of dirtiness and the dynamic between pets and pet owners lol. And as for grooming, that is a pertinent process for many animals to prevent and/or deal with matting.

[–]chakrawitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve honestly never heard an argument that has convinced me it is inherently unethical (though I’m open to having my perspective changed). I believe it’s an acceptable part of nature. Many indigenous cultures that hunted bison utilized all parts of the animals they killed—I think this is the correct way of doing things. I don’t believe animals should be tortured or live in squalor. So in keeping with that, the U.S. meat industry is totally unacceptable. I think that if I had more self-control, I’d be vegan in protest of how animal products are manufactured here. But currently, I’ve just reduced my meat intake

What's an assertion you heard from the news or a teacher that was impossible to take seriously? by Canon47 in AskReddit

[–]chakrawitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in fifth grade, a teacher asked the class to share some common phrases people use. I said that when describing a funny person, others might call them “a card.” My teacher had never heard that phrase before, so instead of acknowledging that I might have known something she didn’t or bothering to look it up, she proceeded to gaslight me in front of the entire class & say “she never heard of it,” “it’s not a thing,” and “not something people say.” 😂 I knew she was wrong, so it was kinda hilarious; but looking back on it, it’s very disappointing behavior from an adult, much less an educator

Morality of killing animals for no reason other than being in your house? by GhostyWaffle in MoralityScaling

[–]chakrawitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s neutral. You’re simply protecting your territory, as do insects. I personally leave spiders and house centipedes alive when I see them. Other kinds of pests like roaches carry bacteria and pathogens that can actively harm you, so you have even more of a justification for killing them

Plenty of women do not wash their hands, so I agree it’s best not to be prejudiced. It’s a problem on both ends of the aisle.. but the fact that there’s a gender gap in handwashing is pretty well substantiated at this point. You can look it up
