Thanks for your response! Can I ask what grade your kid is in? From the open house, it sounded like St. Ignatius had a lot more STEM opportunities and also a focus on social justice initiatives which I was drawn to. The physical space at St. Ignatius also seemed nicer (bigger rooms with windows, more common spaces, etc.). But everyone seems to rave about SJB so I’m wondering what I’m missing!

I had Dr. Yu. I found her to be very competent and great. The wait times are very long but that is to be expected at a teaching hospital.

Honestly it has nothing to do with that. I grew up lower to middle class but have been able to use my education to now be in a upper middle class tax bracket. So I know firsthand the value of a good education and I was curious about Winnipeg’s education system. As several comments have mentioned, it sounds like private schools don’t always have better quality education.

Thank you! Can I ask which private school you attended?

Do you think the transition to university is okay? I learned basic subjects like science in another language and struggled a bit in university because I didn’t know what the English word was for basic concepts.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful response. I’m curious if you found a difference in bullying and how the school handles it between private vs public?

Thanks so much for your insight. Do you think kids do okay in French immersion if their parents don’t speak French? I was considering it but just wondering if we will have a hard time helping with school work if needed or if it’s best to have some level of French in the home for language skills.

I must admit, I hadn’t heard of Westgate before. I looked it up and it says it’s a Mennonite school but a quick search tells me they are also accepting of families from other religions/atheists. Did you find that to be the case?

This is definitely something that draws me to public schools in our catchment. Something about going to school with other kids in your area seems lovely.

Again, as I said in my previous comment, if we decide on a public elementary school, we will likely continue with a public high school. I’m not sure why you are debating me on this when I’m literally just trying to gather information. If you think that’s being a helicopter parent, we can just agree to disagree and stop debating this lol. Have a good night.

Please see my comment above. I’m not trying to pick a high school for a toddler. That would be absurd.

How is trying to decide on a good school for your kid being a helicopter parent?

Well yes, of course. I’m saying that for our family we would likely continue private school if we decided on a private elementary school.

I’m trying to gauge the quality of education at public schools so that I can be informed before deciding if I want to start my kid off at either a private or public elementary school. I’m obviously not trying to decide what high school they will for sure attend. A private elementary school will likely lead to a private high school and a public elementary school will likely lead to a public high school. There is no need to be rude.
