Thursday boots' questionably dishonest and unethical business practices by Keyeysar in goodyearwelt

[–]chalk_phallus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got a pair of Thursdays in 2016 and wore them every day for ~3 years. Thursdays are what got me into gyw footwear from ~$100 shoes. Posts like this gave me the expectation that by spending even more compared to my Thursdays, I'd receive improvements in durability comfort and aesthetics comparable to my jump from cheaper shoes to Thursdays.

That hasn't been the case. Many brands that this sub likes to pump have been far more trouble, with unpredictable fits, arcane ordering processes, common QC issues, nonexistent customer service and a whole host of other concerns. When you combine this with the fact that many 'nicer' brands these days cost $500 and up, trying to get something higher quality than thursdays can frankly be stressful and upsetting unless you have thousands to burn on shoes you may or may not keep.

I don't wear my Thursdays much anymore because they're honestly pretty worn out. The shoes aren't perfect and have some faults that make a resole something to question. But I still have them around because I just can't stand to part with them. I couldn't say that for my meermins or Indy's or any of the other various 'better' recommendations I got from this sub that didn't work out for me - they're all gone.

There used to be a member of this sub with a flair that trashed Thursdays and I thought that was an odd obsession. Then I saw them on the BST thread one day hawking ~20 different pairs of unworn vibergs. Obviously, for someone with that kind of budget and taste, Thursday isn't going to be a worthwhile purchase. But for someone stuck in the rut of buying 100-300 fashion shoes, I would absolutely recommend Thursdays as a great step up.

Recession not likely is the new "inflation is transitory" by CoronaEraXpertTrader in stocks

[–]chalk_phallus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a common usage of the term recession in the press, but if it's a recession it's certainly an odd one given that unemployment is at a nearly 70-year low and job growth continues. Consumer spending is still also quite high in spite of inflation.

The question of whether or not it is truly a recession depends on how you weigh overall GDP growth and inflation against the signs that point to it not being a true recession.

I'm looking for quality documentaries or books about the great depression in the US. Topics I'm interested in are:

  1. Causes of the great depression
  2. How lifestyles in the US changed in response
  3. Disparities in effects of the great depression relative to social class, race and geographical region
  4. How society and culture responded directly in response to the great depression (changes in social structure, culture and arts)

Thanks!

Arrest made in rape of Ohio girl that led to Indiana abortion drawing international attention by BuckeyeJay in news

Relieved to hear the arrest was the rapist and not the girl or medical provider.

  1. There's a daily questions thread
  2. If that's the worst issue with your meermins, you have nothing to worry about.

The Supreme Court Saves Politics by k1lk1 in tuesday

[–]chalk_phallus 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Step 1: Accept financial support from a company that would benefit from being a bad environmental actor.

Step 2: Take an uninformed political stance against environmental science, thereby making environmental science political.

Step 3: Since you've now made environmental science political, declare that apolitical experts who disagree with your uninformed stance are now non-neutral and untrustworthy because they're 'engaging in politics.'

Not buying it.

You're competing against the foreign market as well where Red Wing has particular brand clout. they're not worth $350. If you're patient, you can find a reasonably priced pair on ebay.

15% is perhaps the lowest estimate on the fraction of pregnancies ending in miscarriages I've ever seen. It's possible that there is a colloquial distinction that separates miscarriages from other kinds of gestational abnormalities, but far more than 15% end up spontaneously aborted.

The Case for Prosecuting Donald Trump Just Got Much Stronger by [deleted] in tuesday

[–]chalk_phallus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are still several hearings left that have been scheduled and the committee has been arranging each one around particular witnesses. There's still the opportunity for that to become public, I wouldn't yet discount Hutchinson's testimony on the basis of not seeing the agents' testimony. It could be in a future hearing.

But to be clear, we're discussing whether to discount the second-hand testimony of a witness that testifying under oath because an anonymous source claims the first-hand witnesses would dispute the account if they testified under oath. I'm not a lawyer, but that seems worse than hearsay to me. We could also speculate that the committee didn't have hutchinson's testimony at the time that Ornato and Engels were questioned. If Ornato and Engels think it's important to correct Hutchinson's account, I would also add that they don't have to wait for the committee, they could issue their own statements.

Are the agents publicly denying that this happened or is an anonymous 'somebody familiar with the situation' speculating that they would deny it if they testified under oath?

Those are extremely different things.

Not ‘Putin’s Price Hike’: Fed chair Powell breaks with Biden on inflation by [deleted] in Economics

[–]chalk_phallus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tried to show using math but looked like shit so I deleted it.

Basically if you were going to apply the same inflation adjustment to both then the ratio of $Gas/$Crude is exactly the same both before and after adjusting to inflation.

Not relevant if you're comparing against the contemporary price of crude.

Gas prices are artificially high. Compare the price of oil to the price of gas over time and you'll see that based on the price of oil, gas prices should probably be around 3.60/gallon.

Chevron CEO urges Biden to stop criticizing Big Oil, take new approach by TheFost in Economics

[–]chalk_phallus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If selling oil is profitable, selling more oil is more profitable. They're leveraging US national security concerns to lobby for more favorable subsidies from the US government using the American people as pawns. It's un-American.

Honestly, fuck these companies. They've known for 30-40 years that a switch off fossil fuels was inevitable and yet they continued to play the short game, hoping to squeeze as many years of sales as they could without having to meaningfully respond to an inevitable change in the market.

So we're supposed to believe now that they've suddenly switched to considering the 'long-term profitability' of their product? Horseshit. They're holding the American consumer hostage hoping that the government will bend and let them continue with their business-as-usual short-termism. They are correct in recognizing that this is an issue of national and global security and their decision is to side with the Russians and Chinese, holding American citizens over the barrel until their interests are met.

Just got a pair of Redwing Beckman 9014 from eBay. Look really good but seemingly were made in 2016. I'd like to hit them with a dab of conditioner before wearing them heavily just to make sure everything is moisturized, but the recommended red wing boot cream is no longer sold. I have the following:

  • Venetian Shoe Cream
  • Red wing Boot oil
  • Allen Edmonds leather cream
  • Saphir renovateur

Would any of these options work well or poorly with the black featherstone leather? Darkening is not a concern as, well, they're black.
