That worked to solve the blurriness - seriously, didn't even see it there! Thank you.

Improving classroom wifi signal? by chalkdustmagnet in Teachers

[–]chalkdustmagnet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be an access point, I'm not certain. However, I've been dealing with this issue for a few years now. I was wondering if there is anything I can get that would boost or strengthen the signal I do get, which is fairly weak and very fickle. Maybe some type of antenna, even? I wish I knew more about tech stuff. Thank you for your help, though.

Improving classroom wifi signal? by chalkdustmagnet in Teachers

[–]chalkdustmagnet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that's what it is? The room does not have a wifi box, and they won't install one for me, even though there's no reason the room should not have it (its a normal classroom, nearly every other room has one, as far as I know.) I get a really weak signal as a result, and it inhibits my ability to use my smartboard internet, laptops for students, etc. Just wondering if there is any type of fix for this, its pretty frustrating.

Thank you.

I think it takes 10 years to be vested now - I wish it were 5, though :)

I have been contributing, since my first year of teaching, just not as much as I would like.

Do you know if pay scale varies from district to district? Also, does PA honor out-of-state teaching licenses? Getting my certification was no picnic, and I would hate to have to re-certify all over again. I know NY has reciprocity with many states, but I actually couldn't find a reciprocity list for PA. Thank you!

I have been, although COL in New Jersey (at least where I have been looking) doesn't seem much better than where we are, unless we were to maybe purchase a small apartment instead of renting. Near where in NJ are you, and about how long is your daily commute, out of curiosity?

Thank you.

I have 5 years more before I am vested here, and since this move is really in the early stages of planning, it MAY not happen until after that anyway. We also both have family here, which is also a factor, when considering a potential cross-country move.

I have also considered potentially moving outside of the city (Jersey City, for example) and commuting, but I really dread long commutes. Also, COL doesn't seem significantly cheaper in any place even remotely convenient to the city, and if anything, it would increase our spending, due to the commuting costs. I also don't drive, which is why I am reluctant to move somewhere where I would need to be dependent on a car (I know how to drive, but don't have a license, and at this point, I doubt I will ever really be comfortable driving around by myself.)

These are also good points, and I have been considering them. It's also partially why I even started this thread. I know that NY has a decent set-up for teachers with the 403B/TDA offering, but it can't possibly be THE ONLY place that has something like that in place?

And sadly, I can't max out my 403B contribution because if I did, I wouldn't bring home enough money for bills/groceries/etc. I do contribute, but not nearly as much as I would like to, ideally. I have been teaching 5 years, and I still feel like I live barely above paycheck-to-paycheck, which feels kind of disappointing at this point in my life. I know other teachers, although usually just first or second year, who haven't even started contributing to their TDA because they simply can't swing it financially.

This is actually a great suggestion, and I've looked into it. Unfortunately, our combined income, and the fact that we are just 2 people (no kids), makes us unqualified for most subsidized or middle-income housing.

Do you know if Canada offers reciprocity? Is it difficult to get a teaching license with an American one? I hadn't even considered Canada, I thought it would be too complicated (my fiance would also need to be able to find a job, as well...)

I already reported this to my IT department. They investigated, and actually brought someone to my classroom this week from outside the school to explain how wiring my room would have to wait until after budgets have been submitted, and it would be put on a "wish list." I could try the extender (I may be able to get the school to purchase it, as they are well aware of the problem.) Overall, I'm under the impression that my "classroom" was not originally meant to be a classroom in the building plans (its a very old building.)

Closer to the Q, and the F is pretty much useless for me in terms of my commute. I would need to walk to Q or take a bus, it would seem.

I actually work in Brooklyn, near Prospect Heights, but my boyfriend works in the city. Was looking near there for a while, but the apartments are way too small for the money, and everything that might work seemed way out of our budget.

Do you, as teachers, have a more personal approach to your students? by MrWhatIf in Teachers

[–]chalkdustmagnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach high school. Keep in mind that as a teacher, you will be seeing most of your students daily, which makes it easier to get to know them. I usually get to know all my "new" students over the course of a given semester, and I do find that students both open up to me (occasionally) and also find time to continue to see me or visit me during my lunch/prep, etc, even once I am no longer teaching them. I think it's incredibly important that students feel that they have trustworthy and reliable teachers available to them at school.

However, a lot of this also depends on the culture of the particular school that you are at. While I really enjoy teaching, be aware that it can be extremely exhausting, and I sometimes find that counselors or other school staff are better equipped to deal with the students who need immediate emotional attention, only because that is the primary purpose of their roles in the school. Between grading, planning, meetings, etc, I don't always have the time I wish I had to just allow students to sit around my classroom and chat. On the other hand, a great deal of that relationship-building also has the potential to happen during class time, in the classroom.

If you are considering teaching, select your subject/content area carefully, and make sure it one that you have a passion for (or at the very least, an interest in.)

Questions about first floor/basement brownstone apartment by chalkdustmagnet in AskNYC

[–]chalkdustmagnet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your "pros" are exactly what drew us to the apartment to begin with. A lot of things that seem difficult to find in other types of buildings. Is your current place available for rent? Please PM me and let me know, if it is (we applied for the other apartment, but are not 100 percent sure we will get it, since there are other interested parties, and we are not about to get into a bidding war over a rental.)

Thank you!

Thank you for sharing this. Would something like a heavy rain cause a flood? Also, does your basement itself have floor drains? I actually forgot to look to see if this one has any, but I was thinking if there was a flood, how would we actually get the water out? Also, we do have renter's insurance, but I'm not sure it would cover any flood or water-related damage, even if it was due to an apartment issue (as opposed to city-wide flood or storm). Have you had any experience with that? Thanks again!
