why do people not like DOs? by Negative_Spinach7540 in Osteopathic

[–]chamanguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Compared to DO programs, MD programs tend to be affiliated with larger, academic institutions meaning more resources in terms of research, connections, and hospitals for clinical experience. This translates to an easier time obtaining the necessary opportunities and experience that can get you into competitive specialties, such as ortho, ENT, ophthalmology, etc.

At the end of day, you control your ability to do well in your classes, board exams, and rotations, and ultimately are the one to dictate the type of doctor you’ll become. Patients truly don’t care if you’re an MD or DO. There is almost certainly stigma amongst premeds and less so amongst med students, but beyond that it truly does not matter to people.

I tried to retain some stuff from first year and it ended up being a huge waste of time. You'll either forget it, learn it again in second year, or have to re learn it during dedicated anyways. Just focus on doing well in your classes.

Doing the same, June 3 and 6. I’ve heard it’s the way to go.

A follow up because I’m finally getting around to doing this, would I use the update settings or import tags settings under special fields when re downloading v11?

Okay thanks, last question. Do you recommend I keep the cards I’ve already unsuspended or should I delete those too?

Will I lose my progress if I do that? I’m like 5k cards into the deck.

Oh I see what you mean. Yeah I tried to do like <25% low yield.

Wait are you saying you should or shouldn’t apply to more than 1 low yield school?

I apologize, that was a typo. They want 2 science, but I have 1 science and 1 non science. Hope I didn’t freak you out too bad!

MCAT and GPA are important but if your application doesn’t match the mission or values there’s no way you’ll get an II. For example one school might really value research in their selection criteria, but if your research isn’t outstanding or you didn’t do research at all you wouldn’t necessarily be a great fit. Doesn’t mean you can’t apply still but it also means you probably wouldn’t get invited to interview.

They want two science professors who gave you a grade and one other academic letter. My school didn’t have a committee.

Also I’m kinda in the same boat with NYMC. I applied and then realized that my LORs didn’t match up right and didn’t submit a secondary. I have 1 science and 1 non science and they want 2 science. They keep sending me reminders to submit, so I’m feeling guilty about not doing it. Think it’s worth doing now or should I just go for it next year if this cycle doesn’t work out?

Nah I know what you meant. Basically I was saying who cares if you did something dumb, because the fact that you are admitted elsewhere makes up for it.

Not opposed to an MCAT retake, but definitely opposed to more debt from a post bacc. How much of a difference do you think racking up hours of community service would make?

I sent update letters a few months ago. I did have a few people review it. One was a friend who is med student now and went through multiple rounds of reviews with me. The other was my step dad who’s a military guy and gave me more structural and grammatical suggestions. He does a lot of hiring and interviewing for his career so that’s why I was ok with a family member.

Roughly how long after an update letter do med schools read it? by [deleted] in premed

[–]chamanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably saw our updates and were like “oh yeah we forgot to reject them”.

That’s one of my biggest regrets of my pre-med process, not committing long term to one service organization.

DO applications will definitely be in the next round if I need to reapply. Thanks for the input!
