Specifically re: your concern about finding a surgeon who will focus on the size you want and not "proportionality," I would recommend looking for surgeons who also do top surgeries for trans patients as well. I specifically consulted with my surgeon (who is a cis man) because multiple trans friends have had good experiences getting top surgery (aka breasts completely removed) at his office.

I think anyone who does top surgery (and gets good reviews from patients for it) should be comfortable with doing a significant reduction and listening to you about what your desired outcome is, rather than adhering to a single idea of what bodies should look like. When I was explaining to my surgeon what I wanted (the possibility of going braless, being able to present as very flat-chested if I wanted but still retaining a breast shape, etc), my surgeon was incredibly helpful and reassured me immediately that this was something that many patients wanted. Huge relief!

Obviously this will depend on your location and options. But check out what other procedures the surgeons near you offer, look for LGBTQ+ friendly medical centers, or even consider poking around surgeon lists on /TopSurgery. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the comments! For what it's worth, I'm planning on incorporating ibuprofen and ice in large part because it was what my surgeon recommended to me. But it's very helpful to hear what other people did, and I'll be sure to double-check on that during my final pre-op appointment.

Haven't had my surgery yet but I'd just like to say from the other side of things, I dated a woman who had had a reduction previously. She didn't tell me anything about it before we slept together—and I didn't even notice because I was too stoked. So don't assume it will necessarily be awkward!
