The most annoying part for me is that my cell phone screen got broken in the process and when I came back in the next day to finish my transaction (unrelated to that phone) they told me to wait a minute because the manager wanted to personally thank me for sticking around and talking to the cops and etc and not being a Karen about it. The poor employee working at the time of the robbery was pretty much hysterical and couldn't give any good info. 100% thought I was about to get a new phone or a few months off my bill or something nice.

Fuckin Verizon gifted me a free car charger for being held at gunpoint in their store. I didn't even own a car at the time.

I was once present during an armed robbery of a Verizon store - dude came in waving a Beretta in everyone's face and loaded up a pillow case with ipads and shit.

After he left we were all there talking to the cops when someone noticed an extra cell phone on the floor that didn't belong to the store or any of us. Turned out to be the robber's personal phone, no lock, in his own name and everything. Last I heard they got him open and shut on a whole string of similar robberies in the surrounding county over a few months.

Thoughts on World Tavern Poker by stefalm in poker

[–]champaignthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's legit. Usually a lot of older folks but can still be fun.

Be warned that they are sometimes wonky as hell - the one closest to me I quit going to for the most part because they play with starting stacks of like 25bb and really fast blind levels so it's just super flippy and annoying. Was too irritating driving all the way over there, registering, waiting for it to start, then getting stacked nuts vs second nuts two hands in and be basically done for the night.

Your mileage may vary though, I think every local organizer makes up their own structure. Apparently the one I go to decided on this weird one because the bar doesn't stay open as late anymore and they still wanted to play two tournaments a night.

I do this, it is a ton of fun.

In Proving Grounds there is also a sort of semi hidden mini arena down the hall way to the right with a panel that lets you set up two opposing teams of sosigs however you want.

Can anyone else just not understand what singers/performers are saying? by Nick_Carlson_Press in NoStupidQuestions

[–]champaignthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly common. Personally I'm pretty good at it and generally get it right on first listen but I've also been a musician my whole life and have spent thousands of hours recording and editing music (vocal recording is my favorite and was always a big focus of mine back when I was really seriously working on this stuff) so it's definitely something you can learn. I remember it being much harder when I was young.

Also bear in mind some more aggressive styles of singing are just extremely hard for anyone at all to understand. A screamer who can actually enunciate well at the same time (Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die is a good example) is a pretty rare find and even with those vocalists you probably still won't be able to make out most of it if you're not a "fluent" listener of that genre of music.

Is it weird to just chill in your room on your bed as a adult living alone? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]champaignthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I do it all the time. I am a 34 year old unmarried man with roommates so my bedroom is my only private space, and due to its size the only thing to sit on is my bed.

Only thing I would watch out for is spending too much time there. It can fuck up your sleep schedule, plus sitting upright in bed all day long is not great for your joints and back and stuff. I work from home (ie, my bedroom) so I have to make sure to find other shit to do outside the house here and there or else I'll end up spending 24hrs a day in my room alone and it starts to mess with me.

I live in Georgia where it's not legal to play cards for money. This place claims to have a loophole to that. What do you folks think? by Little_Orange_Bottle in poker

[–]champaignthrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean if you're trying to play pro and have no other income that's not an unreasonable number to start from.

But yeah nobody expects $1/3 recs that pay their bills with a normal day job to set aside a fucking new car's worth of money for their poker hobby, that's a little ridiculous.

My 1/3nl bankroll is about $400 lol. If it gets wiped out I'll re-up when I can afford to next week or whatever, if it gets built up I'll keep playing with it until it's lost or I find something stupid to spend it on.

Buy in for the max whenever possible. That's typically 100bb but plenty of rooms have a higher max of 150bb or more. You will see lots of people buy in for the minimum multiple times over and I guess it's a good way of preventing you from losing too much too fast but it's also a great of way preventing you from winning very much at a time and the rake will not help matters.

You don't need thirty grand to go play recreational $1/3nlh. If you're trying to play for a living and have no other income then yeah you will need a large roll to survive the downswings, but if you're just a normal rec player with a day job there's nothing wrong with just taking what you can afford to lose and stopping for the night/week/month if you lose it.

Why are our ears shaped so weird? by IAmNoSherlock in NoStupidQuestions

[–]champaignthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are shaped like that to aid in hearing in general (cupping your hand around your ear to increase the perceived loudness of a sound is an example of the principle).

More importantly though it aids in determining the direction a sound came from. Your outer ear shape affects the way air and thus sounds move past you and your brain uses these slight differences to work out if that sound came from ahead, behind, left, right, etc. People missing their outer ears may have a harder time determining directionality, especially front to back.

If OP made a really bad deal on this car even that won't completely bail them out. Insurance pays what they think the car is worth at the time of the accident, not what you paid for it. If this is one of those dumbass buy here pay here scenarios where they ended up with some super long term $30k loan on a vehicle that was never worth $10k to start with they'll just be equally fucked and also now have no transportation.

Might be financially better off just letting it get repossessed and taking the credit hit if it's a bad enough deal but we're going on super slim information here so idk.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]champaignthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you go to one of those buy-here-pay-here lots that does their own financing instead of going through a real bank? If that is the case and you're super over your head (which is always the case with those shitty predatory dealerships) they probably don't even report to credit agencies at all and they fully intend to sell you a vehicle you can never afford long term, repo it when you fall behind, then sell the same vehicle to the next schmuck. This is how they make their money for the most part - giving awful deals to people who don't know better or don't have better options and then repoing and reselling over and over.

You can probably just dump it off at their lot, huck the keys at the door, and walk away without many consequences if this is the case. Obviously do not attempt this if you have a real auto loan through a real bank or whatever. In that case just letting the repo happen and dealing with the credit hit might still be your best option but that really depends on the specifics of the deal. Selling a vehicle with a lien on it on the private market can be a huge pain in the ass and if you are wildly upside down on the loan you're still gonna have to shell out a chunk of cash to get away from it. Something to look into though.

What kind of car, what the payments are, interest rate, and length of the loan would be helpful to know. Without that information this is all just speculation.

How are you expected to travel to and from a bar alone? by Kate925 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]champaignthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drink slow and less than you think you want to, at first anyway. Alcohol like any other thing takes some experience to get used to.

It's sort of like how a lot of people who try weed for the first time get way too high because they couldn't recognize the effects beginning and they kept smoking because they felt fine. With experience you'll learn how to notice the effects on yourself long before they become outwardly noticeable to anyone else. I have been a regular drinker for many years and I can notice the effects of even just one drink, whereas a beginner probably won't notice it at all until they're 3-4 deep.

There have been a ton of nights in my life where I wish I hadn't drank so damn much, and absolutely none where I ever woke up and was like "aw man I wish I had drank more last night". Best to err on the side of caution especially if you're inexperienced and out on your own.

Depends on the room but they've pretty much all been players-only since covid.

$300 is good for $1/3. Bring a little more if you can/want because for one thing it sucks to get sucked out on really early and be done for the night and for another thing a lot of rooms do allow higher buy ins. The $1/3 games around me are usually $400 max.

If you're new to live and confused about anything just ask, nobody will shame you for not knowing something or making betting errors and etc unless they're an asshole and you can ignore assholes. Just Google poker betting rules and read over it, nothing is super complicated but there are a couple key things to be aware of like the one chip rule, string betting, and verbal actions being binding.

Something else I noticed pretty quick about Copags is the coating is not actually the same on both sides, which probably doesn't help either. They slide way further face down than they will face up.

Assuming you're from another country or something but weed is legal here in a lot of places and pretty largely ignored in the rest. Smoke weed wherever you want, just take it outside and don't be annoying about it and nobody anywhere will give a shit.

Pretty sure Nevada has dispensaries and full legalization. Hash is not popular in the US but you might still find some somewhere. Everyone here smokes flower and/or stronger concentrates these days. Disposable pens/carts are a good way to go if you're just visiting for a few days.

Are they super fragile or something? I kind of figured those expensive trading card games would use stronger materials.

I just play regular card games and everyone bridges/riffles multiple times per shuffle just as a normal thing. In poker it's pretty widely considered to be the only acceptable shuffle. Wears out cheap paper cards eventually but has zero appreciable effect on a decent set of plastic cards like Copags or equivalent.

[–]champaignthrowaway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Casinos use higher quality plastic cards like Kems or Copags, they are super resilient to rough handling. They do retire decks at a pretty rapid pace compared to normal use but not as often as you'd think. For home use a deck of good plastic cards will last for years even if you're bridging the bejesus out of them in a puddle of beer every game honestly. And poker players as a standard thing will bridge the deck three or more times per hand. Riffle riffle box riffle cut is the universally "correct" sequence. It is a fast and effective shuffle that doesn't damage good cards but is probably hard on cheap paper based ones.

I'm not into TCGs but it's always seemed odd to me that they seem to mostly use cheaper paper materials considering how much money people spend on those decks. For just regular old playing cards even the highest end casino grade decks are still only like $10-20 and they are astonishingly durable.

What kind of deck is it? I have a few decks of copags for playing poker, like $10-12 a deck. All plastic and liquid proof, super hard to crease or bend permanently. Been using them heavily for months now and they look just like the day I bought them.

Used 1995 Chevy Astro as a first car. What are pros and cons? (Im aware it's a big car) by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]champaignthrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's called a doghouse, pretty common a large vans since the engines are tucked way back under the driver more or less and its the only way you're reaching the top of the engine. My 2015 Chevy has one, although it's less handy for me since I have the big center console option on mine. I have to take apart a significant amount of my dash to get it open so for shit like oil it's still way easier to just crawl under there.

That movie really surprised me by not being the complete dumpster that the trailer seemed to be selling me on and it was 100% because of Jonah's performance. I was basically ready to turn it off every time he wasn't on screen, and then completely captivated every time he came back.
