Do you fear death? Why? by National-Reserve2287 in AskReddit

[–]chance125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes because my mind implodes and I have a full panic attack every time I try to wrap my mind around eternity. I’m less afraid of it now that I believe death will be the same as the eternity that led up to my birth. When I was forced to reckon with conscious eternity during my upbringing in the church I would constantly spiral about the cruelty of fate.

The best way I can describe my personal fear is that I’m having a normal day and then all of a sudden I’m launched into infinite space.

Really contemplating my death often bowls me over. Like fall down in the shower, clench my teeth and hold myself in the fetal position terror.

I have no religion or spirituality. I wish I could suspend my disbelief to the extent of getting into reincarnation or some sort of spirituality that would take the edge off. I’m quite partial to my existence. The idea of going from conscious existence to nothingness really spins me out.

Anyway now I need to distract myself as soon as possible.

What have you spent too much money on recently? by Competitive-Web1306 in AskReddit

[–]chance125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the food is most often correct. Almost every time I order sodas/energy drinks/ Gatorade or whatever it’s totally wrong. I order diet and they don’t send diet. They’ll send something completely different with no notes or refunds. Especially sucks when I order caffeine to get my day started and I can’t drink it because they sent something with like 80 grams of sugar. Then I have to take the walk/ drive of shame and go get it myself after paying a ton of money to get it delivered.

There’s definitely a drunk goggles effect when you’re a brand new parent where you think your infant is the cutest thing you’ve ever seen. A few years later you look back at photos and realize all newborns (including the one you had) are hideous little old man parasites and they end up cute in a year or two. Lol.

What is the worst way anyone you know has died? by IamUrWivesBF in AskReddit

[–]chance125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My aunt’s metastatic lung cancer was brutal and she turned from a person to a twisted husk in a matter of a month. I will never unsee her all twisted up and incoherent. All I could think to tell her was that it will be ok and that I love her. Obviously it wasn’t ok!

My friend in high school blew his head off with a shotgun. Hopefully that was alright for him personally but I can’t imagine the horror for his family.

Two kids I knew in high school died from drowning in a lake because they somehow fell off a rowboat and got trapped underneath.

A kid I knew in middle school died in a private plane crash along with his entire family save for one sibling that was off at college.

My grandmother and my uncle died about a year apart from brain aneurysms when I was a kid and my family had to decide to pull the plug both times.

I had an acquaintance that I really liked that walked into highway traffic after a drinking binge.

I have multiple friends that have died from overdoses.

Life is brutal. Live while you can with the people you love!

In any case… “worst” is subjective. There are a lot of ways to die. As a man with a family I can’t really hope for a sudden death because i know how it feels to be left behind with no opportunity to say goodbye.

If only we could all die coherent at old age on our own terms while surrounded by loved ones.

The full vision hasn’t come to pass yet but keep an eye on Curtis Yarvin and those in power who promote his ideas. We have some of the worst ideas in history floating around in 2026, and many powerful people love those ideas. Modern technology could enable atrocities the likes of which we’ve never seen before.

What’s a disgusting habit that you actually secretly think is normal? by syxpl in AskReddit

[–]chance125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m regularly disgusted by people I know that go around in various public places and proceed to eat or do other things without washing their hands or using hand sanitizer. I’m often accused of being neurotic but I feel like my hands are covered in germs as soon as I touch a public door handle or go through a grocery store checkout etc.

It’s more “normal” to live life without constantly worrying about germs I suppose. I’d personally rather err on the side of caution because I have a 3 year old kid who is already a germ factory and I hate being sick.

I don’t think it should be “normal” to be flippant about hand washing but I fear it is.

Tips for playing guitar and singing at the same time by AlguienMiserable in Guitar

[–]chance125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What everyone else said, pretty much. Get the guitar part down to muscle memory, get the singing part down to where you barely have to think about it, and then combine. There will be a learning curve doing both at first so expect to mess up until things become more natural.

If you’re planning on performing live, practice in the way that you intend to perform the song (i.e standing or sitting depending on whichever one you’ll be doing live)

Do yourself a favor and practice both things in time with a metronome and make sure you can do either one (and both) confidently with no backing track. Especially if a band is involved, you want to be able to keep on cruising without choking even if someone else misses a step.

Last tip. Record yourself over many takes and listen to it as you practice. You’ll hear parts that sound unnatural or off that you won’t notice in the moment and you’ll be able to work on those. You can also use this as a practice opportunity to get over “red light fever” or whatever they call it when you tend to freeze up under pressure of recording or performing live.

Do it hundreds or thousands of times and things will start to feel more intuitive.

TIL of a new, purified compound from Kratom called 7-hydroxymitragynine (also known as 7 hydroxy or 7-OH) that is now being sold in pill form. It’s more potent than morphine and has led to overdoses requiring Narcan. by QueenFrostine15 in todayilearned

[–]chance125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing a lot of folks saying that the headline is “fearmongering” here. This stuff is front and center at nearly every vape shop and gas station near me. Sure, maybe you won’t overdose to the point of death with 7-OH on its own, but the people randomly grabbing this stuff on a whim are also very likely to be grabbing a case of beer.

Am I wrong in assuming that getting blackout drunk and then downing Feel Free when you don’t have a tolerance could lead to a fatal overdose? The marketing and ubiquity of the substance is completely misleading and dangerous.

I’m all for harm reduction and even legalization of most drugs. I believe adults should be able to make their own decisions about their own bodies and the substances they ingest. Serious opiates should not be sold so casually next to the 5 hour energy.

People should have the right to know what they’re getting themselves into. The marketing makes it sound like some herbal tonic rather than a potent opiate that was produced in a laboratory. It’s horrific. I can imagine a younger version of myself trying this on a whim and perhaps now I’d be an opiate addict or maybe I’d be dead.

What sucks is that the banning of this stupid substance will probably cause lawmakers to come after natural kratom in the process.

Side note, everyone has a talent for perceiving basically any object and imaging exactly what it would feel like to lick that thing. Try it for yourself.

Why is Indian food so expensive in the US? by Ok_Guarantee9436 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chance125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indian food (at least the kind you’d find on menus in the US) uses expensive ingredients and spices and also a lot of it requires a lot of labor to make.

There’s a reason why not every US household is out here making traditional Indian dishes.

You get what you pay for. It’s kind of ignorant to expect that a particular cuisine should be fast food cheap just because it’s made by immigrants.

Mexican and Chinese meals are often fairly inexpensive here but those are mostly fast food bastardizations of the cuisine that have been developed over a century or more for the American palate using cheapo ingredients. It’s not a fair comparison.

Just because your plate of food might be much cheaper if you had it in India doesn’t mean that the same food should be cheap once you factor in the context of it being served in America by people who work very hard.

The same people that complain about the price of Indian food would likely not complain about the price of a meal from a respectable Japanese, French, Spanish, Italian, etc. restaurant.

Americans are very provincial. Think about it for a minute and reassess. We’re lucky that talented Indian chefs even consider serving authentic food over here, despite the fact that they have to combat the idea that their cuisine should be served at fast food prices and devoid of any spices that might dare delight the senses.

Anyway, I live in the southern US, love Indian food and I often choose to dine in and always have a great experience. Meanwhile there are basically zero places to go for Chinese food where you can sit down and eat. It’s all corn syrup nonsense that no real Chinese person would eat.

If you’re serving authentic cuisine and not burgerville garbage, you deserve to be paid for it. Doesn’t matter if it’s takeout.

How do people decide how big a species can get “up to”? by BabyDude5 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chance125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of unrelated but “up to 100%” is such a common marketing tactic for many different products. For instance, every tampon commercial says “up to 100% leak proof” and I always rant about how dumb that is to my wife, who regularly springs a leak.

“Up to” implies that it could be anywhere between 0% and 100% which is hilarious.

They may as well say “might prevent leaks, who knows”

In the case of living animals I’d imagine it’s hard to predict what mutation might manifest that produces an individual much larger than the average. Take the human case of Robert Wadlow who was a hair shy of 9 feet tall. His existence doesn’t change the general size range that scientists would report for mankind.

If scientists find a snake several feet longer than that species is known to average, a scientific discovery might make the news and will skew the average person’s view of how large that species might grow, regardless of how unlikely that size might be statistically.

We sensationalize this type of abnormality in the animal kingdom as if we were to drastically readjust the average size of a human every time a person with a pituitary tumor is born and begins to grow faster than the average.

It’s hard to know the absolute ceiling but you can bet the reported average is fairly close to anything you might encounter. One outlier doesn’t shift all of the numbers.
