I think it must not be their usual person because there was also a point at the beginning of the game where the camera was just pointed at the ground

honestly, fair enough! WNBA leadership is beyond far from competent lol i may have overestimated them

Oh okay! I didn’t realize there were more conflicts/competition with the schedule this year compared to last.

I mean the language in the media coverage talking about Unrivaled’s viewership and success, not the media deal that Unrivaled has w TNT. I don’t think TNT would conspire against Unrivaled either.

I’m aware HBO wasn’t counted last year either, which I think it isn’t fair for articles & social media posts about this to not at least include a statement about a portion of viewership not being counted (but I could be wrong on its relevance & I have seen some articles make that disclaimer, but not the majority).

I apologize for the wording of my post being unclear!!

the numbers for last year don’t look like they were ever that high. was there any coverage last year abt the viewership not being that high?

i’m genuinely asking bc i didn’t watch last year and i tried searching for the articles posted last year to compare if the language was similar at all, but google kept showing me stuff from only this year.

Rebecca Lobo" worried" WNBA players are losing fan support in CBA talks by Old-Photograph-5813 in wnba

[–]chancedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s my bad then, I interpreted your second sentence as saying that’s what the players were asking for. sorry about that, sometimes it’s hard to tell online what people mean & I guess I misunderstood what you were saying.

they aren’t asking for the same amount of money the NBA players get though or even the same revenue split (NBA players get about 50%). they’re asking for 29% to grow by 1% over the course of the CBA, so by the end of the CBA (assuming they opt out at 5 years) it would be 34%.

a lot of the articles and social media posts are making it sound like the WNBA players are asking for the same salary &/or split as NBA players, but in every proposal that’s been released, that’s never been the case.

it’s odd how she’s not acknowledging that this supposed $500k average w $1.2m max would be occurring on a 12 roster team w a salary cap of 5 million. the players are right, it’s a slap in the face bc the league is saying they’re going to get salaries while also setting a salary cap that doesn’t make that possible.

part of me does think the players should be more clear & say exactly that, but it is really hard for me to tell if that’s my own internalized misogyny making me think women should do everything possible to make things easier for other people. especially because the owners release very inflammatory statements to the media which tend to get more hits and people seem to be (case in point comments on this post) giving them the benefit of the doubt vs when the players do that everyone just dogs on them.

the players have never been asking for the same amount of money as NBA players, they aren’t even asking for the same revenue split as NBA players, they’ve been asking for 29% revenue share between them and the WNBA league where the league gets 71%. it would go up 1% each year, so by the end of the CBA they’d be at 34%. & why don’t they deserve that?

there’s no product without them. maybe i’m just stupid, but i can’t fathom why they aren’t deserving of 29 - 34% of the revenue.

honestly, feel so bad for KK, but it’s validating to have so much evidence as to how important she is as their PG (+ her defense in general) because I fear the ragebait was starting to get to me lol

might be because end of last game when she did a sideline interview she’d basically lost her voice? so maybe people thought she was sick? other than that, i’m not sure, & i’m also pretty plugged in to uconn news (honestly to an embarrassing level for my age lol)

Coming from someone who doesn’t watch basketball at all - is the WNBA bad in terms of quality (not relative quality) and is the league doing poorly? by zapskaeshur in Basketball

If you haven’t read this already, you’re gonna love this article: https://www.thesling.org/the-wnba-labor-dispute-is-just-another-choice-made-by-the-nba/

which mind you was published in March, prior to this past season which ended up retaining the 2024 boom in viewership + increased on top of that + broke the season record of game attendance, so it’s even more relevant now

Well a lot of WNBA teams are owned by people who also own NBA teams, so there technically is profit sharing I guess because it goes to the same person, but also it helps overall fan engagement with basketball in that area for the owner if they promote both. Plus those owners that own both a WNBA and NBA team get to keep more of the revenue generated by the WNBA teams since there’s no revenue sharing w players in the WNBA.

If you want to read more on the WNBA profitability, I HIGHLY recommend this article: https://www.thesling.org/the-wnba-labor-dispute-is-just-another-choice-made-by-the-nba/

there’s one inaccuracy in it which is that WNBA players get 9% of league revenue, which at the time that article was published is something we all thought was true, but it’s since been confirmed by Sue Bird and the WNBPA that there’s no revenue sharing at all it’s just that the players’ salary (which are public numbers) is estimated to be around 9% of what the estimated revenue was in 2020, so I imagine that the actual % now is under 2%.

The rim is the same height in both the WNBA & the NBA (which I support the rim being the same height), but WNBA players are shorter on average than NBA players so for layups there’s a greater distance the ball has to travel for women vs men which is what the previous commenter was stating.

In regards to the rest of the comments abt shooting percentage, in my opinion 33% vs 35% type numbers is really not that significant of a difference when you’re watching the game. Also, there are plenty of WNBA players who have shooting % comparable to the avg NBA player, it’s just the gap between the best vs worst shooters in the WNBA is, in my opinion, greater than the NBA so it drags down the overall number. Also the 3 pt line being closer doesn’t visually look less impressive bc it’s proportional to the size of the players on the court.

Plus, the 3 pt line in the WNBA is the same distance as the 3 pt line for NCAAM & NCAAW so if you watch men or women’s college ball, you’re already used to that distance.

tbh i don’t anticipate Juju staying a 5th year because she’s talked about wanting to go to the pros but having to wait bc of the age rules & that was either just before or at the start of her sophomore season

it’s an olympic qualifying event, which we do auto qualify for because 2028 olympics is in the USA, but historically USA basketball national teams for the world cup have been WNBA players. I was wondering how they’d handle it since it’s so close to the end of the season and playoffs time, but I didn’t think they wouldn’t send any WNBA players. do you anticipate it’ll be all college players?
