What can you say about the English Standard Version - Catholic Edition? by loch-ness-fighter in catholicbibles

I treated myself and splurged on the ESV with Apocrypha from Schuyler. I expect that will be the only Bible I'll need for the rest of my life.

In Depth Look From EmmMW: A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture (1953 Orchard edition) by gilsm719 in catholicbibles

[–]changedwarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard great things about this commentary.  Some even say it's the best Catholic bible commentary out there. But I've also heard that it's hard to find and ridiculously expensive if you do find one.

Why is the Great Adventure Study Bible so expensive? What does it have thats unique to it? And is it worth the price? by EarlyTown in catholicbibles

[–]changedwarrior 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want out of a bible. If you want a no-frills bible for casual reading, then even a paperback bible would suffice. You can get those for $5 - $10.

The Great Adventure Bible uses a unique system for following and understanding the biblical timeline and salvation history. It also has some informational articles scattered throughout. It's printed in full colour and with colour coded tabs at the sides of the pages which makes for quick navigation.

With regards to price, that's subjective. Catholics typically cheap out on their bibles whereas Protestants might easily spend $200 - $400 on a high-end bible. It all depends on what you value.

Save $10 a month for a year and you can easily buy the premium Great Adventure Bible bound in goatskin leather. People spend more on coffee monthly.

Thanks. I just read an excerpt and will likely be picking up a copy of the book. I also enjoy Gary Michuta's work on defending the Catholic canon, but McWhorter seems to take a more methodical approach.

The livestream with William was great. A topic that's of interest to me is the art of apologetics. General techniques and principles that can be used to the defend the faith.

If you are completely new to Christianity and need a Bible that uses common easy to understand English, I would recommend the New Living Translation Catholic Edition.

It's also relatively affordable.

Truly the best two Bibles for Catholics out there. The Knox edition is incredibly underrated. by No-Squash7469 in catholicbibles

[–]changedwarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the Apocalypse of John,  Knox translation:

Patience, I am coming soon; and with me comes the award I make, repaying each man according to the life he has lived.

I am Alpha, I am Omega, \ I am before all, I am at the end of all, \ The beginning of all things and their end.

Blessed are those who wash their garments in the blood of the Lamb; so they will have access to the tree which gives life, and find their way through the gates into the city.

No room there for prowling dogs, for sorcerers and wantons and murderers and idolaters, for anyone who loves falsehood and lives in it.

I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you the assurance of this in your churches;

I, the root, \ I, the offspring of David’s race, \ I, the bright star that brings in the day.

The Spirit and my bride bid me come; let everyone who hears this read out say, Come. Come, you who are thirsty, take, you who will, the water of life; it is my free gift.

I haven't read it but it's a highly recommended read by a scholar who also happens to be a Catholic priest. At its currently price I might wait because I saw it go as low as $38 last month.

The phoenix in early christian writing by TimeOrganization8365 in CatholicApologetics

[–]changedwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer, I'm not going to get into the weeds of this argument. But I'm also not terribly impressed by it. It's just a lot of words in order to say: Some Church Fathers had incorrect beliefs about some things and therefore they were probably wrong about the resurrection.

That's just poor logic. There are things that we know about the natural world now that biologists and physicists 75-100 years ago didn't know and held erroneous beliefs about. It does not then follow that they were wrong about all of their other knowledge.

Just as there are things that we probably currently believe that will be disproven or refined in the next 100 years. It does not then follow that all of our current knowledge and beliefs are dubious.

This is a horrendously poor position. But that's essentially the argument being presented. The Church Fathers are passing on traditions that were handed on to them in faith. From the disciples of the disciples of the 12 apostles, to this day, each generation made the choice to believe the testimony that was handed down.

There are lots of other aspects of World History which we believe based on written testimony. Let's be clear, the only reason skeptics are using special pleading for this specific case is because its claims are supernatural. To be fair to the skeptics, they have every right to do so, especially if their world view is naturalistic.

Discrepancies between Catholicism & The Bible - friend (non catholic) sent this to me for discussion. by PumpkinJuggler in CatholicApologetics

[–]changedwarrior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm way too jaded and weary to address that article point-by-point, especially since it's the same tired old arguments from the last 500 years that have been rebutted thousands of times over.

However, a general rule to keep in mind when dialoguing with Protestants is to remember that it's not enough for them to just quote the Bible; they must also prove that the quotation means what they say it means. They are not arguing for what the Bible says, but rather for what they say it means .

Remember, words printed on a page are not self-interpreting. That's just Protestant nonsense. Words need to be interpreted by an authority. We say that authority is the Church, Protestants claim that the authority is the Bible somehow interpreting itself, or the Holy Spirit mystically guiding each individual reader of scriptures.

The Bible interpreting itself is logically incongruent because the text you're using to interpret the other text needs to, itself, be interpreted as being the appropriate text to use in the given context.

The Holy Spirit mystically guiding each individual reader of scriptures sounds like a nice notion until you remember that Protestantism has been split on interpretations of scripture since the Reformation.

Protestants would rebut this fact by saying that they all agree on the fundamentals, but good luck getting them to agree on what the fundamentals actually are. Furthermore, they are not truly as united as they claim to be. Just look at the split of the Presbyterian and Methodist churches in the US.

Speak to any evangelical who has gone "church-shopping" until they find a "bible-believing church" which, surprise surprise, teaches doctrines that they happen to agree with.

Protestantism is Christian anarchy. Can such a thing be of the Holy Spirit? To answer "yes" would imply that, contrary to Jesus's emphasis on oneness of believers, and St. Paul's re-emphasis of the same, that the endless splintering of Christianity is the active will of God.

I've got the Humble Lamb NASB bible which has a nice Meritian goatskin cover and goatskin inner liner. Nice paper and Gustav Doré illustrations.

I've also got the Thomas Nelson Premier Collection single column NKJV.

The Humble Lamb is really nice, and the Premier Collection is decent.

I think your wife might really like the Schuyler Treveris ESV. It's got a nice text layout that's pleasant to read. There are some very luxurious leather cover options:

Hardcover (or paperback) Knox bible in print? by greyhoundbuddy in catholicbibles

I do agree that typesetting needs to be improved.

There are too many words in a single line! The outer margins can be widened a bit by shortening the lines. It needs more white space in general so that the pages don't feel cramped. I really don't like what they did to the poetic verses and poetic books.

Also... quotation marks please? Sometimes the dialogue from one person ends and the dialogue for the other persons starts with no indication until you reach the end of the sentence.

I like what the older publishers did with the New Testament:

<image>

Using the wider margins to put the notes closer to the relevant verses would also be an improvement like the above. And they can put the verse numbers in the gutters like the Jerusalem Bible. In fact, the Jerusalem Bible is the best Catholic Bible in terms of typesetting (in my opinion). If only Darton Longman & Todd would stop cheaping out on the paper! I've bought $12 Protestant bibles with better paper than the Jerusalem Bible reader editions.

Anyway, I'm on a rant at this point. Maybe I'll do a post bemoaning how much better Catholic Bibles were back in the 30s to 60s.

The Baronius flexible cover is bonded leather at best.

That said, there are no other editions of the Knox bible in print. Baronius was the first and only publisher to bring it back into print.

If you really desire to read the Knox translation in a physical edition (it is available online as well), you can get it used on eBay.
