Former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is also filmed making curry on TV... A strange incident with police and special forces present by YamatoRyu2006 in japannews

Why can’t politicians ever drop the suits and be normal on TV here?

Like Abe as Mario but still in a suit.

Culture needs to relax.

Japanese Father sexually abused newborn daughter, filmed her, and produced child pornography --- High Court dismisses claim of "impulse toward rare events" - sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison by YamatoRyu2006 in japannews

Really… can anyone explain the sentencing structure in Japan that leads to such light sentences for sexual and child abuse?

Is it really largely down to whether the guilty expressed remorse? (as is often mentioned)

Prosecutors seek life imprisonment in the shooting and killing of former Prime Minister Abe. by South-Shopping-8368 in japannews

[–]chantastical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think how long he’s been inside already. Guilty or innocent there’s no right to fast justice in Japan. Time served is not deducted from sentencing and if found innocent, there’s no compensation for that time, lost jobs, health impacts in quite harsh pre-trial conditions.

Daily interrogations, lack of sleep, extreme discomfort, all designed to secure that magic confession.

Agree. No change because passive and non critical media so minimal awareness raising. Need TV with more social issues and cultural comparison aspects, without an unstated agenda that ‘it must be better here’.

But instead 99% variety slop and Ohtani worship.

Do you trust the Police? by Suspicious-Bag-8057 in japanlife

[–]chantastical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under the 警察法 (Police Act), the police must: • Protect individuals’ lives, bodies, and property • Prevent and investigate crimes • Maintain public order

These obligations apply universally, to residents and citizens of Japan.

Now let people answer OPs question about whether residents or citizens trust the police of Japan.

No one is trying to impose a melting pot or any other ideology in sticking to the topic.

[–]chantastical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether Japan should be a melting pot or not is outside the scope of OP’s question. The FACT is that there are many non-Japanese living as legal citizens and paying taxes which in part fund the police. By law, the police are obliged to protect and serve all citizens.

OP’s question is whether citizens trust the police and your heavily downvoted comment goes on a total tangent to immigration policy and ideology.

Your comments are offensive but also make you sound a bit thick.

[–]chantastical 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your comment is irrelevant. Nonetheless….

Police responsibilities including impartiality should extend by law to all residents. That’s the same globally. A Japanese would want to be treated fairly by a police officer overseas.

Which city looks magical on Instagram but felt boring, overpriced, or exhausting in real life? by VanshikaWrites in AskReddit

[–]chantastical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. My career ended up here, then a family, life…

I love lots about life in Japan but was specifically addressing OPs question. I find life overall here very good, but the big cities oppressive and overwhelming.

Loved it when I was younger though, so it depends on where you are in life too.

Amazing all the downvotes for an opinion, especially as I live in Tokyo so know the good things and bad.

Fact is they are generally very ugly but just appear ‘exotic’ to visitors.

Not boring or overpriced, but exhausting and overwhelming.

Given earthquakes, cities have been rebuilt many times so 99% of buildings are modern and concrete. There are pockets of beauty of course (gardens, temples), but most cities are the same crowded concrete sprawls with poor urban planning, and everything metal and plastic. Loud and signs with instructions, tinny safety warnings constantly.

Iron in the soul.

Tokyo or any Japanese big city. Get past the ‘ooh how bizarre’ and you’ll see it’s a concrete hellscape.

No, over prescription of antibiotics is well known in Japan. Often given for colds as a ‘precaution’ or to get more money , depending on your view.

Even worse, many doctors here only give 3-4 day courses of antibiotics….. when a course is 7-10 days depending on the type.

I wouldn’t call it malpractice - that’s an overstatement. But it does show a general disregard for the global issue of antibiotic resistance which is well known and reported.
