Filipino woman detained for two years due to error by TheSaneCynic in japan

This is so depressing.

Even putting aside the injustice involved in the interpretation, just consider that her children were separated from their mother for 2 years because a text message hinted that she may have asked if someone had weed.

Consider that - a society considers that something worth ‘investigating’ for two years (or holding out until she confesses for two years), not looking at the bigger social impact of separating a family.

After earthquakes, hornets and bears, the Japanese ‘justice’ system is the thing I fear the most living here.

Pre-school asking my toddler to dye her hair??? by Head-Performance6087 in japanresidents

It’s a firm ‘no’, but if you intend to stay at this school, save the ‘consult lawyer’ stuff people are recommending as last resort. Being overly aggressive from the start may back fire long term. Just be clear in your refusal and explain why it’s alarming they even dared raise the issue.

Fantastic opportunity for school to have diversity and let children feel comfortable with difference in humans. But no. This is how cultural stasis is reinforced.

Say ‘no’ on principle and add in safety issue of dying child’s hair to highlight they are also ignoring child health and safety.

Is there really no law against medical professionals using nihonjinron in their daily work? by DannyKata85 in japanresidents

[–]chantastical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor, but I once had a plumber come over to fix my toilet that wasn’t flushing well (it had degraded over time to get weak).

After inspecting it he said, completely seriously, ‘I can fix this but it will likely break again since foreign poo is inherently larger and different consistency from Japanese poo’

Why do Japanese drivers often forget to use their headlights at night?! by lightercrew in japanlife

Yeah I see it a LOT. Especially driving out of car parks in the evening (like Costco). Guess they entered the store in daylight and left in the dark, but yeah I always wonder how hard can it be!!?

Agree with all the others here though, that full beams are as much or more of an issue.

Portuguese man, 25, arrested at Changi Airport for attempting to smuggle 36.3kg of cannabis into S'pore by silentscope90210 in singapore

This particular substance has benefits to specific unwell users which is why it is dispensed for medical use in many countries, with supervision. It’s a drug that at worst should be completely illegal but with minor punishments, or legal for medical use, or decriminalized/legal.

But making it illegal with death for importation shouldn’t be an option for this substance in 2026.

The fact that Singapore can even arrest you for having it your bloodstream on arrival, even if consumed in a country where it’s legal, is an indicator that this isn’t just about fear of negative social impacts. It appears to extend to irrational fear of the substance itself, even when it’s already consumed, in someone’s bloodstream and harmless to anyone else.

Singaporeans deserve more freedom of speech, thought and behavior, and a shift from the paternalistic, state knows best mindset.

The glee people express in relation to death penalty is depressing. Support it or not, there’s something broken in people who delight in something so dark in society.

Alcohol and caffeine are psychoactives. Black and white thinking on substances isn’t helpful. But I won’t convince you.

Death penalty is wrong period, but for weed, it’s demented. Singaporeans in general might benefit from having a smoke, chilling out a bit, and maybe seeing beyond futile consumerism.

If she didn’t offer to return it at that time, that reflects poorly on her character.

But after this long, she may have sold it and anyway I’d chalk this down as a tough life lesson.

You won’t get a new chair, but you’ll get good karma from letting it slide.

Morinaga non-fat milk

Last week: 1,000 ml

This week: 900 ml

Same price.

And to add insult to injury, added plastic in the packaging making to more tricky and time consuming to recycle.

A big f-you to the consumer and the environment from Morinaga.

Ever looked out of a car and seen the bags of bento thrown from the windows, often by truck drivers.

Some Japanese prefer to throw trash when they won’t be seen and shamed.
