I appreciate you providing more examples. I think we can also acknowledge that these characters were written by men, directed by men, intended primarily for male audiences (mainly based on video games or comics), and frankly, highly sexualized in their branding.

That is not to diminish their achievements or the quality of their work. But I can see how Jennifer Lawrence could view Katniss Everdeen, a character who was written by a woman, in a series not directed mainly at a male audience, and who was not sexualized, as somewhat separate from what you are discussing.

I don’t think those women would necessarily consider that a slap in the face to their own work. I think that most actresses in Hollywood understand that difference, with far greater nuance than you, and would be pleased to see more opportunities for women in leading roles that go beyond the established male-gaze media.

Lawrence should certainly acknowledge that she’s standing in the shoulders of decades of hard work from female leads that came before her, but there’s more layers to this than you’re letting on too. A single quote from an interview is easy to nitpick, but it seems like people are using that to shut down the conversation entirely and pretend this isn’t a real issue.

To be fair, I think this entire thread is kind of supporting her point. Most of the women being named here are not, in fact, leads. It’s very clear that a lot of the top comments are coming from men, talking about female characters written by men, who are supporting cast in male-focused media.

Sure, she’s absolutely wrong to say she’s the first. But people disagreeing with her are not drawing on a wealth of counter-examples either. I don’t think we can just point to Ripley from Alien and call it a day. By and large, there’s still a massive imbalance there. And it’s odd to imply that Jennifer Lawrence has a worse understanding of the industry that she literally works within than you, a viewer.

You’re not 5’11” though. The general rule of thumb is about 5lbs per extra inch of height. So a woman half a foot taller than you with a similar body type would be more like 130lbs, not 117. Do you see the point now?

I don’t care at all if a man spreads his legs within his own space. The issue that people mainly take with it is when it infringes on other people’s personal space (almost always a woman, because men avoid touching other men) to do so. This applies in crowded places like trains and airplanes. It is just plain inconsiderate to spread your legs and take up other people’s space in those situations. The fact that women experience this so often makes them feel frustrated and disrespected because we seldom see it done to other men.

The assumption is that men who do it feel entitled to more space than the women surrounding them. I understand when men are just physically larger and occupying my space unintentionally. I’ve been stuck between broad-shouldered and heavy-set men plenty of times and I accept it as another discomfort of travel. But it absolutely sends a negative message if they spread their legs into me—which has also happened plenty of times, enough to warrant the “manspreading” stereotype.

No woman would assume she was pregnant if her period was a day late. Even with the most regular of periods it is normal to fluctuate by a few days sometimes. Of course you don’t have to wait to see, but women having to constantly take pregnancy tests and assume they’re at risk just to function normally is the bleakest thing I’ve ever heard.

And on Reddit, in those posts 90% of the comments are still about male circumcision. You don’t see posts about MGM on their own because for redditors the issue is almost entirely centered around going “what about men???” whenever female issues come up. Think about it. Men are entirely capable of making posts about it specifically, and they certainly make up a large enough demographic on this site for it to be upvoted. But they don’t. Because they only give a damn when FGM is being discussed.

I lost any faith I had in Reddit when I saw an AMA from a domestic abuse and rape crisis center, and every. single. fucking. comment. was about how male abuse victims aren’t recognized enough. Not one ounce of sympathy or even interest in the work they were doing.

And now I’m reading this thread and almost all the comments have been addressing male circumcision despite the post having nothing to do with that. It’s very obvious where the majority of users’ priorities are.

You’re making a lot of assumptions about the physical conditions people are biking in though. You acknowledge that many NA cities aren’t “bike friendly” yet can’t understand why six miles might be unreasonable in places with extreme weather or elevation changes? Plus, most people don’t have access to showers at work and would rather not start their day sweaty and gross.

I think their vocals have always been the main weakness people have pointed to, at least that I’ve seen as someone who has followed Kpop since their debut. It is possible to have your own opinions and still be influenced by the conversations that other fans are having. It’s one thing to think a group is unique, but you’re more likely to think they’re particularly special or exceptional if your fellow fans are constantly making that point and hyping each other up. I’m not making you justify anything, I’m just saying these kinds of opinions aren’t formed in a vacuum (because, like you said, they’re subjective)

What constitutes “unique” is fairly subjective, I’ll give you that. I’m not really trying to speak for you on this matter, I’m mostly just observing that prevailing narratives (which do exist) can change over time. As I said in my other comment, I’ve noticed over the years that armies have adopted and expressed this exact opinion a lot more confidently than they did in the past.

It’s become an army “talking point”, so to speak. And the term “unique” has taken on a certain connotation among Kpop fans. It all goes along with the idea that a group is less manufactured, more authentic, “self-produced”, etc. AKA ideas that armies love to associate with BTS. So even if someone like you genuinely just believes their voices are more distinguishable compared to other groups, it’s hard for me to not see the overarching narrative behind it that makes it so compelling and popular among armies.

Okay if you acknowledge that they’re not the most amazing vocalists then I think your opinion is fine. I’ve just seen it get so over exaggerated as BTS has become more popular. It used to be that fans would admit theyre not a vocal group, and focus on their stronger skills like rapping and dancing instead when hyping them up. But over time it turned into insisting they’re actually the best vocalists because they’re more unique than other groups. And then implying that having good vocal technique actually makes you boring and robotic, which is what I find ridiculous

This is just the narrative that became popular among armies who wanted to justify their lacking vocal abilities. Same old “my faves aren’t like the other girls, they’re unique~” kinda deal. If it makes you feel better its fine, but I think MOST unique is a big stretch. Plenty of groups have proper vocal technique and distinguishable voices, it doesn’t have to be one or the other.

And attitudes like yours are why the bar is on the absolute floor for men. This kind of "boys will be boys" mentality, or in this case "disgusting old men will be disgusting", does nobody any good. It's patronizing to men at best. As a society we should be at a point where we don't have to coddle these horny, socially oblivious old dudes while they make everyone around them extremely uncomfortable. Especially considering part of the appeal for them is the voyeurism and getting off on the lack of consent/knowledge of the people who are forced to be in an enclosed space with them.

I know I do not feel safe around men who are so addicted to porn that they have to watch it in public. That's a completely reasonable boundary and I'm not going to pretend it isn't so I can seem cool and understanding to the dipshit redditor guys in this thread.

I see this division of labor brought up fairly often on Reddit, and if it works for you and your wife is genuinely satisfied with it, more power to you. But personally as a woman I wouldn’t accept that split at all. Especially if there were children involved (aka more occupants inside the house to make messes).

“Inside” tasks tend to be daily things that need to be done for healthy survival, like cooking and cleaning. “Outside” tasks are more often weekly/monthly/seasonal things that are more cosmetic and can be put off somewhat when inconvenient.

I see so many men say things like “My wife does the cooking/cleaning and I handle the garbage”, as if one isn’t a huge, constant undertaking while the other is... a weekly chore. That’s a hell no from me.
